UFC 189: Prelim Play-By-Play And Results

UFC 189

Alrighty, possibly the biggest card in UFC history is underway in Las Vegas, so let’s get to the prelim action…

Louis Smolka def. Neil Seery via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Cody Pfister def. Yosdenis Cedeno via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Henry Briones vs. Cody Garbrandt

Round 1: Garbrandt throws a head kick that misses. Follows up with a right. Briones plants a left hook. Garbrandt flurries in. Garbrant comes in with hooks but Briones ducks out of the way. Briones plants a hard jab. Briones attempts a spinning backfist. Briones wings an overhand right but takes a counter. Fight spills to the mat briefly. Action is back up. Garbrandt comes in hard and takes Briones down. Garbrandt fires down some shots from above. Round ends.

Round 2: Garbrandt tries a cartwheel kick. Briones lands a jab. Garbrandt with a 1-2-3 combo. And another. Garbrandt plants a hard hook but Briones eats it. Wow. Briones hits the mat after taking a couple thumping shots. The bantamweight is back up. Briones lands a nice right hook and attempts a flying knee. Garbrandt attempts a takedown but can’t get it. Garbrandt plants a hook but takes a counter. A right hand from Garbrandt finds the mark. Briones is starting to wear it. Briones grazes Garbrandt with an overhand right and the round ends.

Round 3:  Volume has dropped down a bit. Garbrandt lands a hook. Briones charges in and wings a hook. Briones with a jab. Garbrandt lands a right and then a right hand. Whoa. Garbrandt launches a flying knee but it didn’t land flush. Both men land hooks. Briones with a right. Briones comes charging in but is greeted with a double leg. Garbrandt lets Briones up and fires a knee. Briones is still coming forward though. Wow. Both guys are chucking hard shots. Final bell sounds.

John Howard vs. Cathal Pendred

Round 1: Pendred jumps right out of the gate but doesn’t follow through with the knee. Pendred takes a hard leg kick. Howard plants a left. Pendred attempts a kick but Howard clinches up. They break. Pendred fires an uppercut. Pendred chucks another kick and Howard clinches. Howard throws a knee to the body. Latter breaks away. Both guys fires off punches. Howard plants a left hook. They trade leg kicks. Howard tags Pendred with a right and the latter pushes him to the cage. Round ends.

Round 2: Pendred changes levels but takes a counter. Howard digs a hook to the body. Howard lands another shot off the clinch. After a brief break, Pendred clinches up but takes several punches in return. Some boos starting to ring out. Pendred feints a TD again and clinches up. Pendred lands several nice knees to the body. Again, Pendred takes a couple of punches as he looks to clinch. Howard plants a thumping leg kick. Pendred checks the next one though. Pendred throws a kick and Howard counters with punches. Howard cracks Pendred with a hard hook before the round ends.

Round 3: Pendred looks for a TD but Howard shoves him aside. Howard comes in and plants another hard leg kick. Pendred looks for a leg again and clinches up. Some hard knees from Pendred. Howard breaks free but Pendred ties him up once more. Now Howard looks for a TD. Pendred locks in a guillotine but Howard gets out. Pendred gets to his feet. Pendred tries to ties him up but Howard counters with punches. Howard cracks Pendred with a left hook. Howard comes storming in with hard shots, Pendred fires back. Round ends.

Wow, one judge scored the bout for Pendred…thankfully the other two scored the fight correctly.

John Howard def. Cathal Pendred via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

Alex Garcia vs. Mike Swick

Round 1: Garcia charges in takes Swick to the mat. Garcia is working within Swick’s guard. Swick jumps to his feet but is pushed to the cage. Another TD from Garcia. Latter is in half guard. Swick gets up and out. Swick with a stinging kick to the body. Swick fires a jab narrowly dodges a counter. Swick lands a right and Garcia taunts. Nice check knee from Swick. Garcia chucks a couple of bombs but misses. Garcia fires a hook. Round ends.

Round 2: Garcia throws a punch comes in and takes Swick down again. Some impressive power from the Tristar fighter. Swick kicks him off and gets up. Garcia fires an overhand right. More heavy shots from Garcia. Swick with a left hook. Garcia storms in with a hook and straight right again. Garcia changes levels, Swick momentarily stops TD, but is thrown to the mat. Round ends.

Round 3: Swick needs a stoppage to win this scrap. Garcia comes in but eats a counter. Swick is keeping busy with the jab. Swick throws a head kick but it’s blocked. Garcia chucks a overhand right that misses. Garcia finds a home for his left. Swick lands a nice straight right. Garcia explodes in and again, takes Swick down easily. Garcia is in half guard. Wow. Garcia passes into mount. Nicely done. Swick gets back to half guard but it’s passed right away. Garcia spins for an armbar but can’t get it. We’re headed to our fifth straight decision.

Matt Brown vs. Tim Means 

Round 1: Brown fires a kick but it’s blocked. Means lands an elbow which hurt Brown. Latter attempts to clinch up. Means takes a finger to the eye. Fight resumes. Means goes to the body. Wow. Brown wobbles Means with a right. Means fires back but is pushed to the cage. Means is throwing punches as Brown has double underhooks. Means breaks out. Browns fires a head kick and now Means looks for a TD. Latter defends a guillotine choke but gets taken down. Means is back up. Busy, busy pace. Brown lands a right but is pushed back by a front kick. Wow. Means stuns Brown with a big right and left. Brown is cut. Brown comes back with an elbow and Means shoots in. Wow. Brown jumps on a choke and the fight’s over. What a scrap.
