Although Chad Mendes will face Conor McGregor this Saturday on just a few weeks notice, his buddy and teammate says he’s more than ready to end the rise of “Notorious”.
Mendes has been tapped to face McGregor at UFC 189, after featherweight champ Jose Aldo was forced to withdraw, due to a rib injury. Before Aldo officially announced he was out, Mendes was put on standby, but still, that was only two weeks ago.
Well, Mendes’ teammate Urijah Faber recently spoke to MMA Junkie.com, and while doing so, he had this to say about “Money” and the shape he’s in.
“Chad’s looking mean – real mean,” Faber said. “It’s going to be a good fight. I know Conor’s been building this bad dog up, and it’s going to explode – in his face, I believe. It’s definitely going to be a good fight, a competitive fight, but I see my boy Chad getting the ‘W’…”
“Chad Mendes is a guy who has been training his whole life,” Faber said. “It’s not like he’s all of a sudden getting ready for a title fight…Could a full training camp have been a little better? Of course. But is Chad in great shape all year round? Yes. Is he ready to take this belt? One hundred percent.”
It seems like most people don’t expect the bout to go five rounds, but if it does, it will be interesting to see how Mendes looks. The guy is clearly a machine, and one of the planet’s best 145’ers, but, McGregor’s been training to fight for weeks and weeks.
If you’re wondering, McGregor is the betting line favorite heading into Saturday’s bout, in the -155 to -190 range.
UFC 189 will be hosted by the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The card will also feature welterweight champ Robbie Lawler taking on Rory MacDonald.
