Diego Sanchez Tested Positive for Marijuana

One of the UFC’s top welterweights and most known fighters, Diego Sanchez, tested positive for marijuana after UFC Fight Night 7 in Miramar in December. Here’s the news from the Orange County Register:

“UFC welterweight contender Diego Sanchez tested positive for marijuana after his first-round KO over Joe Riggs on Dec.13 at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station. Armando Garcia, the executive officer of the California State Athletic Commission, said Sanchez paid a $500 fine and served a three-month suspension, so he has been cleared to fight Josh Koscheck at UFC 69 on April7 in Houston.”

In this case I have to say tghe punishment does fit the crime. Marijuana has no positive effects in regards to fighting or training and can actually impair one’s abilities to detect pain putting the offender in danger. The $500 ammounts to very little nor does the time off but the fact that the drug does little to benefit the fighter makes this punishment fair in my opinion.

Earlier this month UFC veteran and current PRIDE fighter Nick Diaz also tested positive for marijuana.

It is surprising to note that it took a complete 3 months for news to even surface of the failed test.

hahahahaha weed…**** it should be a legal drug by now..its true its not gon help u in a fight…but diego…i never saw that coming….that puts his whole 19-0 record on the line right there…but atleast hes cleared to smash kos

  • Kris says:

Yeah it is just surprising it was kept secret for this long. I too think he’s gonna beat Koscheck but it does indeed put one of the UFC’s “clean” fighters into the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

  • Ed Wise says:

I liked him but I have now lost some resoect for him. I hope Josh Koscheck beats him good now, and takes him to school.

  • Art says:

This is really suprising coming from Diego. He repeatedly speaks openly about his faith and living a clean life but loses alot of credibility with this. More than losing respect with fans is what kind of ental state will he be in if he feels ashamed or embarrassed or his actions.

  • Kris says:

I am really torn on who to root for. One one had Sanchez is a good fighter to cheer for because he has an unblemished record and an impressive fighting style. On the other hand Kos wrestled at a school 30 minutes from me so that weighs in as well.

As far as this incident, he has said it was a one time thing and will not happen again. Granted that sounds like a standard thing people say the first time they get caught but I can’t really take anything away from him because it was “just marijuana” and it was only his first time.

man.. he smokes some weed.. who cares.. who doesnt have the odd puff. and even if u dont, u shouldnt judge others because they do..and take the side of our over enforced pathetic drug regulations.. i mean seriously if weed was legal.. would that then make it ok to have the odd puff.. if alcohol was illegal and someone tested positive for alcohol..would that make him such a bad man.. i mean geezz.. let the guy have some private life..nothing beats after a hard ass day training and being in the zone for so long, to relax infront of the television have a puff and fall to sleep..

  • [...] biggest problem with this situation is UFC 69 where Diego Sanchez, who failed a drug test in December, fought yet was never tested for performance enhancing or recreational drugs. I [...]

  • Craig Fisher says:

I'm really pissed at Sanchez and Diaz. Diego for his hypocracy and Nick for not being smarter than that. These guys have a lot of adult as well as juvenile fans that they have been heroes for that have paid them well and have now lost respect for them. ****-can both of them. I won't pay money to see any fights they're in again. They need to apologise to the kids, especially.

  • Kris says:

More important than them even testing positive is that the UFC basically hid Diego's test result for a long time. Shame on them but they received the punishment they should have and that is that. While I am not praising them I don't think we can ignore the skill they both possess.
