Shawn Jordan Credits New Mind Set, Approach to Training For Recent Run

After suffering consecutive, KO losses, Shawn Jordan has turned things around in impressive fashion, and the heavyweight credits a new mindset and training habits to his recent run.

Jordan was knocked out by Gabriel Gonzaga in October, 2013, and then last March, he suffered the same result versus Matt Mitrione. Although the athletic heavyweight had scored some memorable wins leading up that point, the defeats raised questions about his potential to be a top contender.

Well, since then, Jordan has gone on to stop Jack May, Jared Cannonier, and most recently Derrick Lewis. In Jordan’s last victory, he dropped jaws throughout MMA by putting Lewis down with a hook kick.

Recently Jordan spoke to MMA Junkie.com Radio, and while discussing what’s behind his recent run, the 30 year-old stated:

“That two-loss streak kind of made me sit back a little and look at this thing,” Jordan said. “Luckily I have good coaches that were involved that work on that mental toughness. It was tough, and I had to make a decision at that point. I changed things up and dealt with mental issues and got ready to compete. I went all in.

“Changing stuff in training and kind of controlling that aspect of stuff (has been key). Not getting beat up and stuff in training and show up to fights as healthy as I can be – that’s helped a lot with that.”

Jordan also relayed in the interview that he’d like to fight a top ten heavyweight next, but stopped short of calling out a specific guy. He did say, however, that he’d be interested in fighting Frank Mir or the winner of the upcoming bout between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Stefan Struve.

Mir, on the other hand, is set to fight Jordan’s teammate Todd Duffee on July 15th.
