In a monumental heavyweight collision, Fabricio Werdum rose to the occasion and became the champ.
From the opening bell, Werdum stood in the pocket with Cain Velasquez and threw leather. Velasquez appeared to be on point early on, but Werdum quickly took back momentum as he defended Velasquez’s take downs, and broke the champion down with punches. Without the wrestling, Velasquez was forced to stand and trade with Werdum which turned out to be detrimental. Werdum used his long jab and right straight to counter Velasquez’s forward movement, and then battered him with knees in the clinch.
As the fight grew on, Velasquez accumulated more and more damage, and also seemed to slow down – an unusual sight for Cain Velasquez. Werdum on the other hand seemed one step ahead in the striking exchanges. Eventually, Velasquez was forced to shoot, but “Vai Caivalo” was ready with a guillotine. He synced it up tight, and forced the tap from the champion to capture the UFC heavyweight gold in the third round.
What a sensational performance by Fabricio Werdum. He took Velasquez’s wrestling away from him, and beat the American-Mexican fighter on the feet. Both fighters landed big shots, but Werdum was more accurate, busier, and ultimately in control of the fight. What a performance for the new UFC heavyweight champion, Fabricio Werdum!
