It was a brutal 15 minutes, but Eddie Alvarez edged Melendez in their rival lightweight bout.
It wasn’t a Diego Sanchez/Gilbert Melendez type of war, but instead we got a very competitive chess match between Eddie Alvarez and Gilbet Melendez. The action started out a bit slow-paced, both Eddie and Gilbert appeared to be tentative a little gun-shy. However, a big elbow in the pocket from Melendez stunned Alvarez and also seemed to badly damage his eye. Alvarez recovered until the end of the first round, but afterwards he blew his nose causing his left eye to immediately swell shut.
With the added facial damage, Alvarez had to resort to his takedowns and clinch control to steal the last two rounds. Nevertheless, Gilbert scored with his jab several times throughout the bout while Eddie favored hard low kicks and a couple vicious spinning elbows – one of which cut Melendez open in the third round. Eddie got the job done with one eye, but was unable to really impress. He appeared gun-shy and had to use take downs as opposed to his patented boxing arsenal.
It’ll be interesting to see who Eddie gets next, but it will most likely be somebody in the top 5. Hopefully he won’t have the swelling problems he had in this bout. Big win for Eddie in a hard-fought 15-minute contest.
