Fabricio Werdum may have a ton of momentum behind him, and is a ridiculously talented fighter, but according to Cain Velasquez’s coach, he’s going to get blown out at UFC 188.
As next Saturday’s fight nears, Werdum is riding a five fight winning streak, which has showcased the fact that he’s far more than just a world class grappler. Case in point, Werdum out struck Travis Browne for the UD win last April, and then in November, he put away Mark Hunt with a flying knee.
Well, recently Javier Mendez spoke to MMA Fighting.com about next week’s championship fight, and Velasquez’s coach had this to say:
“I’m very confident in this one,” said Mendez. “He’s gonna kill him. Werdum has no chance. Cain’s gonna do what he wants to do with him. Junior dos Santos is still the biggest threat to Cain Velasquez. In all respect to the other guys, Cain and Junior are at another level. I’m stating facts. Come June 13, Werdum can prove us wrong. But I don’t think he will.”
“Werdum’s not going to be able to handle the intensity,” Mendez added. “He’s not going to be able to handle the cardio. His best chance is a knockout or a submission. He can’t win a decision. Nobody can beat Cain in a decision…”
Now sure, there are likely more than a few people who agree with Mendez. After all, Velasquez is also a very talented striker, has a black belt in BJJ, as well as a renowned wrestling game. These are reasons why the champ is a -450 to -500 favorite on the betting lines.
But, does this mean he’s going to destroy Werdum? If he does, it will certainly be one of his career highlights, especially when you consider Velasquez hasn’t fought since 2013.
UFC 188 will take place in Mexico City.
