Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belfort in Doubt for January, Georges St-Piere May Not Return Until March

Anderson Silva Retains Title at UFC 90Injuries to middleweight champion Anderson Silva and welterweight title-holder Georges St-Pierre could alter the UFC’s plans for early-2010, as both fighters may be sidelined longer than expected.

While heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and challenger Shane Carwin are expected to be recovered from their recent bouts with the flu to headline UFC 108 on January 2, Silva’s title defense against Vitor Belfort that had been scheduled for the card is in doubt as Silva continues to recover from recent elbow surgery.

St-Pierre, who’s been sidelined since a July title defense over Thiago Alves, was expected to headline a February UFC card, likely UFC 109 on February 6, but may be unable to return to the Octagon until March, according to Yahoo! Sports, though the Silva-Belfort matchup could be tapped to fill the main event.

An opponent has not yet been determined for St-Pierre’s next fight, though the winner of a UFC 105 matchup between Mike Swick and Dan Hardy is the likely front-runner.

The good news just keeps on rollin in.

  • Shaun says:

if i remember correctly they said that Silva’s surgery was supposed to be quick and easy rehab.. now they are pushing it back?

    I’m getting bored.

  • Figs says:

This seems to be a little suspect. I really don’t think Anderson Silva wants this bout at all, but I am not him and can’t really come to that conclusion, though it looks that way.

    • jcohl says:

I have my issues with something things said in Anderson Silva’s name by his handlers, but IMO I don’t see the logic in assuming he’s ducking Belfort.
He’s already used his promotional stroke with Dana to wave off fights with both Hendo and Marquardt, and if he didn’t want to fight Belfort he could retire tomorrow and always be regarded as one of the best ever.
Possibly he was more injured than previously reported, or maybe something else personal or medical just came up in the interim.

As for GSP, he might as well take his time coming back.
After all, its not like there is a 170er out there with a chance of beating him if he comes to the cage on fight night at 100%, so whats the harm in taking some extra downtime while letting guys like Swick, Kos, Alves, Daley, and Kampmann figure out who is the 3rd best 170er in the UFC, with the Greatness being first and Jon Fitch a distant second…

    • Justin H says:

Ed Soares, Silva’s manager, seems to be a shady guy. The more I see of him and his way of doing business, the less I like him.

      • jcohl says:

Previously I posted some unkind comments towards Anderson Silva, and now I wish I could redirect them towards his handler Ed Soares.
Silva has almost always shown himself to be a true sportsman, while Soares is slowly revealing himself to be that sort of behind the scenes agent/manager guy that Dana White is always railing about in magazine interviews…

      • Justin H says:

And of course, anything from Silva’s camp comes through the filter of Ed Soares, and it was through Soares that the “Silva’s getting elbow surgery… I mean he’s 200%… I mean he had elbow surgery,” thing came to be known, not Silva himself.

      • jcohl says:

Just wondering if Soares is picking up bad habits from the M-1 Global-types…

  • Crmtde13 says:

Monte nussbaumer! Ufc sign this man! He’s a beast and is 26-0

  • Vinz_Clortho says:

After what happened to Machida maybe these guys arn’t so certain they are unbeatable anymore. I mean common Machida got raped in a fight they were so confident he had the upper hand stylistically.

When looking at the Belfort Silva fight I feel the same way I did abotu the Rua Machida fight.. Vitor is someone that you cannot count out becuase he has great speed and hands that is hard to train for.

If Silva stands infront of Belfort and does his chicken-head dance you can bet Vitor will put a new hole in his skull.
