Lyoto Machida to Undergo Surgery, Rematch With Shogun Postponed
UFC light heavyweight champ Lyoto Machida will soon undergo surgery that will postpone his immediate rematch with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, according to Yahoo! Sports:
UFC officials have confirmed that Lyoto Machida will need surgery on one of his hands, thus delaying the planned middleweight championship rematch with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (18-4). Machida injured his hand during his controversial win over Rua during UFC 104 Saturday in Los Angeles.
White was hopeful to get the rematch in as soon as Jan. 2, when the company has one of its traditional major events of the year at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Rua had agreed to the date, but Machida’s surgery eliminates whatever slim possibility there was that he would be fully recovered and ready in time for that date. Right now, it is not known when the fight would be able to take place.

What a surprise.
Out stuck, out landed, out damaged, lacerated lip, busted up hand and not being able to walk properly still to this day, yet he remains champ and will probably hold onto the belt at least another 6 months + without having to defend.
Complete BS.
*out struck.
We really need an edit option on here! =)
And while we’re at it, we need a remove button for brainless posts.
How is Machida’s surgery more BS than Silva’s? How is it more BS than BJ ducking a title fight for over a year – including time to spend with children after the GSP fight (which came 8 months after his last fight)? Machida needs surgery on a hand and it’s BS?
Get back to sherpup if you want to rail against the injustices of an injured fighter. We’ve analyzed the Rua-Machida fight to death elsewhere. It’s now a non-issue. You’re making it out like Machida is ducking a re-match…something he agreed to immediately after the fight.
Now it comes out he’s hurt and needs surgery. Suck it up, unless you’re going to start calling for all champs to fight instead of surgery.
There is always the proofread button. Oh wait, that’s not a button.
Dude it was a BS decision. It is BS we have to wait because he shouldn’t have the belt anyways, it isn’t BS he is injured it’s BS he’s champ.
Woo Sah dbiz
biz,
I never said the surgery was BS, I said the whole thing was BS. And it is. The “injured hand” is really convenient though after Dana said there would be an immediate rematch. There was no medical suspension to Machida due to an injured hand, nope, just a lacerated lip. So yes, it does seem convenient of a time for Machida to go have surgery and put himself on the shelf for half a year or more, and in doing so further robbing Shogun of the title which majority of fans around MMA felt he won. Doesn’t taken even a self proclaimed expert on fighting like fellow poster swank to realize that one.
Does he need surgery? Maybe he does. Could he prolong it and defend his title in a rematch which I feel he owes to fans and specifically to Shogun, probably? Regardless…. what now? Shogun will now have to go and defend his #1 title contender-ship before he gets his rematch? That is BS. I fail to see how I am brainless for stating my opinion. Whether or not you agree, this is a message board to the public and everyone has the right to his/her own opinion.
As far as the debate on fellow contenders dodging fights, I was one of the biggest advocates voicing my concerns with BJ Penn refusing to defend his title more than once a year. I am also not too thrilled with Brock canceling his title defense due to “flu like symptoms”. Silva picking and choosing who he wants to fight and telling Dan and Nate neither one of them deserves a shot till they fight each other is also not what a champion should be doing. The UFC is way too lenient when it comes to their champions and I wish they would do something about it. As far as GSP goes, his current situation is different in my opinion. He had a serious injury and on top of that he already cleared his entire division of challenges. The UFC currently has NO number one contender for the welter weight belt. So GSP can sit back and recover as long as he needs to.
If you find my posts brainless, don’t respond. It’s really that simple. If you’d like to have a civil and non insulting discussion on two different opinions, I welcome that!
Cheers.
What do you know, another thread of if you don’t have the same opinion as dbiz, you’re an idiot. I think you should start sucking up the fact that people’s opinions are going to be all over the place. You can re-buttle without trying to make it sound that people are not worthy of having a conversation where ever you are present. Nothing personal, but lighten up.
Markus,
I guess you’ve never heard of someone breaking a bone, and not having the typically obvious signs of a break. Speaking as someone who has broken their hand, it’s possible that the injury was missed in the post fight medicals, and a week later when Machida’s hand still hurt like crazy and was puffed up like a balloon he went and got it X-Rayed revealing a fracture.
It’s so cute how one comment makes the thread all about me. I AM T3H MOSTEST POWZERFULZ POST3R ON T3H FRENZEEEE
Justin,
That is a very possible scenario, my friend. It is also very possible that this is an opportune time to take care of some very minor surgery that maybe Machida had been prolonging for some time. A great time to rest and recover, sit back and ponder what went wrong. Until we see a medical report or pictures of this swollen and mangled hand of his (which we won’t) we are left to speculate amongst ourselves. Which is exactly what we are doing. Does he have an injury? Probably. Does he want to defend his title immediately against Shogun? I doubt it.
I personally feel that Machida’s ego is a little more bruised than either his hand or his ribs.
Let’s face it, how would you feel if your reign as champion was in question, your fans who once cheered for you now boo you, your boss says he feels you lost your last fight and for the first time in several years you felt what is was like to be on the receiving end of some vicious strikes, which left you bruised and battered while your opponent walked away without a scratch? Mentally, I feel, he’s beat. Looks like he will have plenty of time to fix that now though without having to worry about defending his title.
Shogun won’t have to defend anything. They have already agreed on a fight to occur as soon as both are healthy. Re-read the last line of the post again, then read how dumb your comment was. Sheesh.
And people wonder why I never cross the Intelligence Divide and venture out of the forums.
Gotta love yahoo screwing up… I really didn’t know Lyoto beat Anderson
well said dbiz!!!!!!!!!! I have a big problem with posts lately people need to step there mma knowledge up a bit if they are posting on this site, nobody is amateurs around here so if you don’t have a clue about fighting or the fight game go post somewhere else.
So you think it wasn’t a BS decision? You think that the Machida situation is justified and we all get to sit with a stagnant title at LHW even tho we should have a new champ ready to defend soon?
I don’t see the “brainlessness” of the post could you discuss it with me?
ready to defend soon??? Vinz look up the title holders in every weight class and look
how often they defend the title……even if rua did win who do you want him to fight and when?? Really what are you trying to say in ur comment?? Regardless if there wasn’t a rematch between rua and machida lyoto wouldn’t have fought till at least June anyway because we are waiting to see who wins between couture vs vera rashad vs tiago griffin vs ortiz so I don’t understand what u are talking about
From my experience, the guys who come on websites and go out of their way claiming to have far superior knowledge on any given topic/sport while dismissing or complaining of the lack of others, are usually the guys who have little to no experience, practical or book, on that topic/sport at all. Just some food for thought.
Regardless, to be a a fan of MMA and to post on a discussion form, does not mean you have to fight yourself or practice martial arts. Anyone and everyone can be a fan of something and comment on it if they so choose. They pay the same money you do to buy PPV fights. Their opinions are as valuable as yours and anyones for that matter.
Despite having more practical and competitive fighting experience than most posters on here, and practicing various forms of mixed martial arts since I was a child, does not mean my opinion is better than yours, therefore you should take a hike and find another group cause you aren’t on the same level as me. Everybody has the right to say what they want about this great sport we all love. I just wish others would try being a little more respectful to other peoples posts on here and not bash each other cause you might disagree.
Regards,
Markus J,
Amen brother.
Markus J I hear you on the poster bashing, then again it sounds a bit like the pot calling the kettle black IMO. What about posting fabricating speculative opinions bashing fighters without the full fact, this to IMO should stop to on the frenzy.
yeah yahoo sports. lyoto machida is the new middleweight champion.
There are alot of big cards right now that need big fights. Just puttin this out there. Liddell vs Franklin will be on one of them to try and help out with all the injuries. Atleast I think so.
@Carls
IS that just a rumor or did I miss something? That’d be a sick fight!
No its not a rumor yet. Just a hunch.
Franklin would win that fight in the same manner and fashion he beat Wanderlei. 3 round decision. It would be a fairly boring fight imho.
I actually think a Liddell vs Wanderlei Silva rematch is what both fighters need, as was posted in another thread. Losing fighter retires, winner gets some much needed momentum and the fans get another action packed classic. If not Silva, I could see Chuck taking on the winner of Ortiz vs Griffin fight.
That fight wont happen. Wandy is fighting Sexyama. Plus hes wants to fight a MW now. Franklin needs a fight and one with Couture or Liddell would be the only one I see happening. Maybe Tito but who knows. The thing is Chuck wants to come back and they arent gonna put him against a can. He has stated that he would like a rematch against Jardine so thats allways an option to, and if he wants to go out on a win that would likely be his best bet right now. the Franklin/Liddell fight would be huge though and could headline a card on its own and seeing how the UFC hasa lot of injured fighters I think that could be a a likely matchup.
i think jardine liddell makes the most sense considering they are both coming off loses to top contenders (thiago silva and shogun). Maybe they should throw this fight on the australia card or something. Hard fight to call but i gotta say liddell by 3rd KO to jump start his comeback and start the beggining of the end for the dean of mean
Wow.
I’m shocked at just how quickly Lyoto Machida went from MMA superstar to a guy some are implying is looking to drag his feet on a rematch with Shogun Rua.
A rematch he immediately agreed to, by the way.
And if you’ve seen the fight, then it should come as no surprise that one or both of these men would be dealing with post-fight medical issues.
As for dbiz, I can’t really blame him for losing his patience sometimes. I do it too, although I’ve been trying to be more understanding of differing opinions.
And as it relates to the practical experience Markus J references, I can’t speak for anyone other than myself, but at 32 years of age I’m thinking I’ve got more mat time than the majority of the frenZied posters, plus 4 amateur MMA fights, with a 5th coming on 12 December.
Just a little more food for thought…
I thought you were in law enforcement for the last 25 years jchol ? How could you be a 32 year old mma fighting , business owning guy who flies around the country watching UFC events then ???
UHHHHHH OOOOOHHHHHH …………!!!!!
Jcohl never said anything about law enforcement.
Um,what?
“UHHHHH OOOOHHHH…….!!!!!!”
Really?
DrDoom, you may have me confused with another poster, but I’m not a cop, I’m a chef. And the only thing I’ve been “doing” for 25 years is getting on my parent’s nerves. Once I hit 7, they basically ran out of patience with my sh!t and started acting accordingly.

As far as my business goes, not that its really any of yours, but I CO-OWN my business with 2 partners that are close friends and great all-around guys.
I do a fair bit of seasonal traveling in my job, and thankfully my personal circumstance [no children as of yet and my female makes her own money] does allow me to hit a couple of UFC events each year, but the majority of them I catch just like everyone else on PPV.
Regarding my “MMA fighting”, I had 4 amateur fights between 2002-2003, and I have my final fight this 12 December after a 6 year layoff.
Now, “DrDoom”, if there isn’t anything else you need answered, maybe the rest of us can get back to discussing MMA in general, and Lyoto Machida and Shogun Rua in particular, and YOU can get back to fighting the Fantastic Four in the movies and comic books, OK?
I beg to differ Jchol ….. in a reply to one of my posts you stated ” I have been dealing with the Mob activity in Las Vegas for the past 25 years . ”
So what did you mean then ? You might have not said “law enforcement” but what concern would it be of yours personally then ? What dealings ?
Its the way you implied that you had some hand in the goings on ….. not just living in Las Vegas . Who cares if you lived/live somewhere there is crime .. we all do .
What I’m getting at is you twist words to give your posts more leverage than they really hold .No biggie, but don’t imply that you are some kind of expert in areas that you know nothing about .
It’s like me saying ” Ive worked on cars all my life ” and really never changed the oil before .
Dr Doom, I’m not much interested in drama, so I suggest you just move along to some other topic, or if you have some weird deep-seated personal need, another poster to engage.
You somehow mistook me for someone else, so you can either be a man and admit your mistake, or not. Either way, I’m not going to waste time or energy on this sort of non-MMA related noise.
And I’m thinking if you insist on posting personal attacks, your comments will eventually be moderated.
Your choice…
pretty s l o w m e d i c a l r e p o r t u f c – but i’ll give the benifit of the doubt.
still sucks for shogun.
he wins the tile,
is denied decision,
now he will probably fight some tough bstrd,
probably will win,
but will then have to prove himself against a fresh lyoto relatively soon after a fight.
if i forget about the wins losses belts and just enjoy shoguns fights, i’ll be OK.
if not, i’ll pretend his next fight is a a title defense
plus there is a good chance he’ll finish the next victim quickly
I can’t wait for this rematch whenever it happens. IMO its going to be a another close fight. My prediction (assuming Shogun doesn’t get injured in the fight before like bust his knee) is that Shogun is going to retain his game plan however pick up the pace a few notches and become far more aggressive.
That would be great if Phenom/Spiderman and Shogun/Dragon were on the same card. A top Brazilian showcase.
