Thiago Alves Withdraws from UFC 107 Fight with Jon Fitch (updated)

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Oct 30, 2009 at 10:32 am ET28 Comments

Thiago AlvesA knee injury has forced Thiago Alves to withdraw from his rematch with fellow welterweight contender Jon Fitch at UFC 107 on December 12, according to Fanhouse.

Alves recently suffered a torn posterior cruciate ligament and will be out 3-4 weeks, likely returning to action in January or February.

Though Alves had sought to simply postpone the rematch until he was healed, the UFC will instead look for a replacement to fight Fitch at UFC 107, with Ariel Helwani telling MMAFrenzy.com that the promotion felt it wasn’t fair to make him wait further after he was bumped from UFC 106 last week.

UFC 107 is headlined by BJ Penn vs. Diego Sanchez and also features Kenny Florian vs. Clay Guida, Cheick Kongo vs. Frank Mir, and Paul Buentello vs. Todd Duffee.

    NNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Figs says:

Training for this sport is just getting tougher, therefore nwe;re just going to see this happen more often. $hitty buzz. I hope the bout is just delayed, because I REALLY wanted to see this re-match as both fighters have immensely improved.

  • EtherBunny says:

Well this eff-ing stinks, I was really looking forward to the rematch. I think that Fitch just dodged a bullet with this one.

  • GarRule says:

I feel so bad for these guys when they get hurt. NFL guys, too. No guarateed income just plain stinks. Having so much talent and potential and it’s just taken away…speedy recovery, dude.

  • Justin H says:

This sucks. Maybe we’ll see Hughes v. AKA this year after all.

    • jcohl says:

GSP forbid that Hughes gives in to those AKA tools and their constant whining for recognition and some cheap cred with an assumed win over an aging legend.
Camarillo and Cook should be ashamed of themselves with the way they allow Kos and Swick to carry on.
And Fitch as well, if he’s looking for a fight with Hughes. If he isn’t, he ought to speak up as to avoid getting lumped in with the other stains over at AKA…

I’m sure Dana’s head is spinning trying to find another creditable matchup again. Dam this injury bug is in the air.

Not having big names to replace a bout after an injury is starting to become a problem because of so many shows so close together, I believe.

  • jcohl says:

I definitely agree that this fight should be rescheduled, as opposed to another opponent found for Fitch.
Who could Jon Fitch possibly face that would draw interest and have some sort of positive influence on his 170 standing?
The truth is that Fitch IMO is still the number 2 170er in MMA, and until someone steps up and proves me wrong, like many thought Alves would do, Fitch’s standing will not change. He’s simply the best 170er on the planet that isn’t named GSP, to paraphrase Dana White.

Even if Fitch hacks into the 170er UFC Way Back Machine and signs to fight Hughes or Serra or Miletich or Royce Gracie and wins, he’s always going to be second best.
    Sad but true…

Now that Alves is officially out, Hughes name will obviously be coming up again. But besides him im wondering who else they could throw in there. Anyone know if Lytle or Davis are busy?

IMO the best fight here for Fitch would be Kampman. Now I know Martin just got pummeled by Daley, but lets be honest here. What you do you think is gonna happen if you stand and trade with the guy. Kampman matches up with Swick perfectly. Size, streangth, chin and durabilty are pretty equal. BJJ is pretty much the same. Wrestling goes to Fitch while striking goes to Kampman. Martin just had a bad fight against Paul, he is a solid fighter who could give Fitch all he could handle. Some may think Martin doesnt deserve to fight Fitch at this point but neither did Wilson when Fitch was on his title run. The only problem here is, Kampman and Markham are set to fight. But Markam should be fighting Larson, Brad blackburn or “Stun Gun” after getting KOed by Hardy. Plus the fight only got signed like a week ago so it wouldnt be to late to switch the bout.

I know some of you will think im crazy, but this fight would be awesome.

  • RonnyRAGE says:

This sucks this was the fight I was looking forward to the most.

  • RonnyRAGE says:

I hope they can get Hughes or ???

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

im glad theyre not makin fitch wait after bumpin him off 106. would rather see him fight in dec then over training for a dangerous guy like alves in 2010. after looking at the events i have a few ideas. idea 1 bump karo or hazelett to fight fitch. idea 2 give him johny hendricks whos on the 107 card. idea 3 see if kampmann can take the fight a month earlier then his rumored fight(i wouldve put daily or condit but then i wouldve said the 2 that dont take it fight each other on 108 but if daily takes it that leaves a kampmann vs condit rematch which i wouldnt mind and if condit takes it that leaves a kampmann vs daily rematch). idea 4 give him hughes cuz i cant think of any other welterweight thats not booked in fights. unless they were to sign someone… someone like “whitemare” make it happen bring akuma to the ufc

  • ckdiesel says:

lol, funny how they want to be “fair” to fitch now after they subsequently cut him after that whole video game thing, and once resigned was moved to undercard fights. yes, lets be fair to fitch now that he wont be fighting another top contender.

    • fr702 says:

honestly Zinkin Entertainment tried to “strong arm” Dana White and ZUFFA which then led to Fitch getting cut along with the possibility of all AKA fighters getting cut and anyone with ties to Zinkin Entertainment (excluding Chuck Liddell, in which Zinkin Entertainment only represents him on clothing deals not tied to TapouT) Fitch then saw the contract that Zinkin Entertainment turned down and made crazy acusations about, and well Fitch signed it along with all of AKA (or AKA members that fight in the UFC)……

As far as Fitch v Gono being the swing bout @ UFC 94 well in all honesty that bout had decision written all over it, and with the main card containing mostly fights that were likely to go to a decision, it is understandable that Fitch v Gono was the swing bout.. Hell with GSP v Penn going 4 rounds and Machida getting the only main card stoppage that was a long drawn out card…. I believe that a majority of people make a bigger deal out of the Fitch (Zinkin Entertainment)/ AKA against the UFC, then really should be made……..

      • ckdiesel says:

fr, thanks for the reply but you dont think that dana was trying to do any of the strongarming? from what i gathered and what fitch said is that he came in guns blazing, demanding that he sign the contract or pay like hell. just to me it seemed like a punishment getting an opponent like gono and getting moved to the undercard imo, or perhaps more so just blown completely out of proportion on all parties…

      • jcohl says:

        Trust me.
If Dana White wanted to hand out “punishment” to one if his fighters, it would be a lot more obvious.
Dana White is many things, both good and bad, but subtle is most definitely not one of those things.
And if Dana were of a mind to punish AKA fighters, he’d simply make a Swick-Kos match with Fitch fighting the winner.
If they don’t like it, they can hit up Scott Coker and see if he’s interested in one or all of them, and they can squabble over who gets dibs on fighting Whitemare or maybe Mayhem at 170…
