Kimbo Slice vs. Houston Alexander Possible for TUF 10 Finale

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Oct 30, 2009 at 6:00 am ET29 Comments

kimbo-slice-ufcA long-rumored fight between Kimbo Slice and Houston Alexander may be in the works for The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale on December 5 in Las Vegas, with MMAjunkie reporting Thursday that Alexander will soon apply to fight in Nevada and could square off with the Slice at the Spike TV-televised event.

Alexander (9-4), a loser of three-straight UFC fights, returns to the Octagon after getting back on track outside the promotion with a knockout of one-time UFC fighter Sherman Pendergarst in September. Prior to his three-fight skid, “The Assassin” scored back-to-back knockouts of Keith Jardine and Alessio Sakara to begin his UFC career.

Slice (3-1), a cast member on TUF 10, suffered a second-round TKO to Roy Nelson in the season’s opening round, but will make his official UFC debut at The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale.

With the fight still unannounced, it is not yet known whether Slice will move down to 205 for the contest or whether Alexander, who has competed exclusively at light heavyweight in the UFC, will move up to heavyweight for the matchup.

The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale also features Jon Jones vs. Matt Hamill and Frankie Edgar vs. Kurt Pellegrino, as well as the finals of the season’s heavyweight tournament.

now there’s a fight that suits both these guy.

  • southcakalak says:

i wouldnt be surprised to see the fight at heavyweight, seeing how as kimbo has never had to cut weight before, and they’re not wanting him to miss or come in off of an unhealthy cut

  • Chris says:

Kimbo has no shot, regardless of weight class.

  • MMAster T says:

Hells yeah! Nice match-up. 2 brawlers

  • EtherBunny says:

Dang, I like both of these fighters. If this was about 2-3 months ago I would have been rooting for Houston to KTFO Kimbo but ever since the show I’ve grown to like him as a fighter. I’m not going to make any predictions on this fight because for one, it’s too close to call in my book and two, I like both of these guys too much to care who wins.

  • russiandoeboi says:

kimbo’s certainly several notches above the last tuf bout guys.

alezander is a good match up they both have respectable ufc entry level skills and heart

  • Markus J says:

Sorry but I don’t see Kimbo having any chance in this fight. At least they are giving him a guy to stand with though who won’t take it to the ground. Hmmmm….. didn’t Dana criticize Strikeforce for doing the same thing?

    • jcohl says:

Dana White has said for years now that “styles make fights”, by which he means interesting, marketable fights that UFC fans want to see.
And maybe more importantly, will PAY to see.
Who should Dana match Kimbo Slice up with, former NCAA Div.2 National wrestling champion Shane Carwin?
Or some other HW with mad ground skills, like Frank Mir, BigNog or Gabriel Gonzaga?
Did you not SEE the Nelson-Slice fight on TUF?
That in and of itself should be reaosn enough to applaud Dana for having the good sense to not sign a fight wherein someone else can “Big Weeble” their way to a yawn-tastic win over Kimbo Slice, a man most fans want to see succeed in the UFC.

Also, maybe they could make s projected Slice-Alexnader fight catchweight 215, just to be fair to Alexander, as I think Slice fights around 225-230?

  • mmaguy says:

somebody’s head is gonna get knocked off clean. both guys love to bang and not much on the ground department….. all out street fight. It’s a toss up but I think Kimbo is has something to proof,,,

  • ckdiesel says:

i think that houston might have a bit of an advantage in speed but once those lunchboxes land on that suspect chin i think that it will be lights out.

nebraska will not be in the house that night : )

  • GarRule says:

Watching these TUF fights it’s really a shame for Kimbo that he didn’t get to fight one of these other heavyweights. I think Nelson’s going to win the whole thing easily. That was the worst possible match-up for him.

I don’t see the logoc in this match-up at all. Is the point to get to guys that throw bombs?? I guess. Maybe Alexander will be in less shape not being at 205. (?) Maybe then Kimbo has a shot. I think I’d rather see Kimbo get a few lesser opponents before getting thrown to the big dogs. Nobody wins in this fight when Alexander’s quicker hands take Kimbo out.

I think Kimbo v. Struve would be a fun fight to watch. I’m sure Kimbo would get caught in something, but watching him try to pound on skinny Struve could be entertaining.

  • Jerod says:

We’ll just call this one a M.A. match, not M.M.A, as we all know how this one will shape out.

I’m having a hard time picking up on any messages Dana is sending here. Does he want Kimbo to be successful by giving him somebody with zero ground game like Houston Alexander or does he want Kimbo to struggle by giving him an experienced veteran like Houston Alexander? Maybe there is no message and I am just overthinking things.

Either way, should be a very entertaining slobberknocker (to quote the great Gorilla Monsoon). Kimbo via gogoplata. 2nd rd.

    • Justin H says:

Both fighters are popular, though one obviously more so than the other, and both fighters need someone to stand and trade with them to have a chance at success. I think it’s a good, marketable matchup, that could go either way. The only down side, to me, is if Alexander KOs Kimbo, you still have a guy with no ground game to try to market and build up.

  • E-ROC says:

Houston Alexander was hurt by each of his opponents while fighting in the UFC, though he did come back to beat a couple of them. I think Alexander is in trouble given Kimbo’s size advantage and punching power. Kimbo’s chin is sturdier than Alexander’s chin.

    • Markus J says:

Kimbo’s chin sturdier? Um, how the heck can you say that? Seth Petruzelli knocked him out with a love tap that wouldn’t drop anyone in the UFC. Kimbo can box, don’t get me wrong. But to say his chin is stronger than Houston Alexanders is a little bit out there. Take off the Kimbo glasses and stop drinking the cool-aid. lol.

  • GarRule says:

Unless Kimbo’s beard is made of kevlar, I think he’s doomed.

  • BuzzBradski says:

If this fight is actually at Heavyweight, like I assume it will be, and Kimbo is still standing at the 3 minute mark – after a 1 minute feeling out process and a 2 minute blitz from the assassin – I can see Slice taking advantage of a grossly gassed Houston.

Did anyone else notice Kimbo ground training in the background when were supposed to be engrossed by Junk doing some sparing in the last episode of TUF? You gotta admit, he has perseverance.

  • fr702 says:

Houston can come in weighing 206 and it would be a HW bout, I would assume that Houston would come in around 216 or so…

Kevin can win this fight, remember before Alexander destroyed Jardine he got rocked I would be inclined to say Kevin hits harder than Keith, it is an obvious bout, gives both fighters an opportunity to do what they do I don’t see this getting out of the first round and I do believe that one of them will get ko’d I just wonder which one it will be…

    • jcohl says:

Maybe catchweight 215-220 just to be fair to Houston Alexander?

      • fr702 says:

but Jcohl the Heavy Weight division is 206 lbs – 265 lbs that is the division, with Kevin Ferguson weighing approx 235 and Houston could come in around 216~220 ish that would still be a HW bout no need for the catch weight “situation”

      • jcohl says:

        True.
I was just thinking that maybe it might be a little fairer to Alexander, who’s ideal weight class IMO is 205.
Either way, its going to be a He11a entertaining fight to watch, for as long as it lasts…

  • chrisl says:

should Buffer just stay in the octagon for this one? KO in the first 3 either way…

  • mmaman says:

Catch weight at like 220-225 imo

  • Amped says:

I have more respect for Kimbo now that he’s been on TUF, but is he a better fighter? I’d say about the same. Going for the knee when being pushed off balance by Nelson was fail and doesn’t show good instincts as an mma fighter. Almost reminded me of AA.

Going to go with Houston here.

  • Amped says:

Houston is also much faster, whereas Kimbo has a slow pondering “I can see your punch coming a mile away” standup.
