Brock Lesnar Off UFC 106 Due to Illness, Title Defense Against Shane Carwin Moved to UFC 108 in January

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Oct 26, 2009 at 4:42 pm ET90 Comments

Brock-LesnarUFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar has been forced to withdraw from his scheduled title defense against Shane Carwin at UFC 106 on November 21 in Las Vegas due to an illness that has prevented him from training for nearly a month, UFC President Dana White confirmed to Yahoo! Sports on Monday.

According to a post by Carwin on Twitter, the fight has been rescheduled for UFC 108 on January 2 in Las Vegas, leaving Tito Ortiz vs. Forrest Griffin to headline UFC 106.

Lesnar has reportedly been suffering from flu-like symptoms for three-and-a-half weeks, with White saying Lesnar has “never been this sick in his life” and “hasn’t been able to shake it” but that he is not believed to have H1N1 (swine flu).

This “illness” strangely will make room for the immediate Shogun-Machida rematch.

    • cj00 says:

did you see machida after the fight?? even shogun a bit ?? you think these guys are gonna be ready to go again in a month??

because i don’t …. IMO i guess, but im sure many others would agree

      • Figs says:

I agree with you, there’s no way they will recover in time. I gaurantee you Machida is sore walking around, let alone training for a fight in four weeks.

  • tmoney says:

It’s a rare condition known as Vaginaitis. In medical circles it’s known as a scaredsh!tlessimgoingtogetknockedout infection of the lower bowels.

    Not gonna fly. -Justin

  • EtherBunny says:

Dude, no effing way. This is horrible news. I was so looking forward to watching this fight. I wonder who they will get to replace him.

  • Lex415 says:

Damn it! I was waiting for this card! Vaginosis strikes again!

    Really? -Justin

  • oldman420 says:

3 1/2 weeks with the flu, I’m sorry but thats not a flu. I had h1n1 and it only lasted 5-6 days and maybe 2 weeks of respiratory problems. This sounds more serious than just a case of the flu.

  • TheCoach says:

The UFC is getting to big for it’s own good. They need a big fight for their year end card, and now they have. Just like moving Lesnar/Mir 2 from 98 to 100.

  • The rob says:

    Hells ya machida-shogun!

  • mmaman says:

I feel a shogun machida calling.

hahaha brock, ok he hasn’t been training for over a month, and no one has heard about it…..

it does seem like a case of vaganitis

    No more of that. -Justin

  • Figs says:

This illness seems rather suspicious. The UFC has been in trouble trying to recover a main event for 108. I’m not a conspiracy theorist by all means, but this is just looking too convenient. Don’t you think a high profile fighter like Lesnar would have had news leaked on him being ill by now?

    • chrisl says:

only reason I believe it’s plausible is because if he was going to wait and see if he could fight he’d wait until the last second to decide if he needed to call it off. Nog did the same and in his case it backfired.

  • T3chn3tnium says:

plans for me purchasing 106 has been canceled… 105 looks way better anyways..

    • JENKINS! says:

I disagree. I think 106 is by far better than 105.
      Ortiz vs Griffin 2
      McLovin vs Karo
      Ben Saunders vs Marcus Davis
      Rogerio Nogueira vs Luiz Cane
      etc…

Thats a pretty good card even without Lesnar vs Carwin

      • T3chn3tnium says:

        couture/vera randy LHW contender?
        hardy/swick winner fights gsp respectivly…
bisbing/kang not that exciting but still attracts..
brown/wilks potentially FOTN and you knows its gonna be explosive..

106 has good fights.. but nothing as meangingful as the fights on 105 bring imo…. the only fight that sticks out the most on 106 is the lil nog and cane fight. that fight will be bad ass!

      • JENKINS! says:

The winner of Couture/Vera is not a contender IMO.
They can be considered as a top LHW. But they are not yet on the level of Machida, Shogun, Rashad, Thiago Silva, Anderson Silva, Forrest Griffin, etc.

        Couture lost his last fight.
Vera beats Patt, Soszynski, and maybe Couture and suddenly hes a true contender? I disagree.
        Thats just my opinion.

The only fight that sticks out is Lil Nog vs Cane…you really think so?
Thats understandable depending on who your favorite fighters are to watch.
Tito vs Forrest 2 sticks out to me…
So does Lil Nog vs Cane
So does McLovin vs Karo (we finally get to see if McLovin is ready for better opponents)
Ben Saunders vs Marcus Davis is a guaranteed brawl IMO

We could go on about this all day dude hahaha.
But I understand where your coming from

      • nickageb says:

dont u think there is sme carry over from veras stint in hw tho? agreed hes def not top 5 but hes in contention as much as randy imo

andoh yea vera WILL win this fight! WAR VERA!!!!!

  • JENKINS! says:

    What is with you people?
Brock Lesnar is not scared of Shane Carwin.
You could throw The Hulk in there with Brock, and he wouldnt back down.

If Brock hasnt been training for almost a month, we probably wouldnt know about it, seeing how he practically lives in the middle of nowhere.

Also, I seriously doubt Shogun-Machida 2 would go down in November. It is too soon. Machida had to get stitches, and we all know his legs are going to be sore for a while. They wont be ready to fight by then. No way in hell…

Anyways, this really sucks, I was so pumped to see this fight. If they do indeed move it to 108, then thats pretty cool. That makes that card look stacked. Rashad vs Thiago, Gonzaga vs Dos Santos, Daley vs Condit, Brock vs Carwin. Wow thats a sick card. Naw Mean?!

One idea is have Velasquez fight Carwin at UFC 106. Velasquez looked un touched after his fight against Rothwell. So he could possibly be ready by then? Idk. This would truly prove who the #1 contender is. Im not counting out Minotauro as the true contender, but I think he should wait, train hard, and fight later this year. I highly doubt this would all happen though. Just an idea.

  • Jason S says:

WOW REALLY? Im sitting here in Afghanistan and i get to come home for two weeks during this time frame. I was really looking to come home and havin a party for this fight. Now i prolly wont even order it… BWW HERE I COME!!!

PS…. THIS IS THE UFC and you’re telling me two guys with a combined record of 0-4-1 in there last few fights are HEADLINING a $55 ppv. This is just more proof that the UFC is becomeing more for ENTERTAINMENT and less of a sport. They should move Randy and Vera to this card and let Bisping headline the england card.

    • JENKINS! says:

Regardless of their records and recent losses, Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffin are great fighters.
Also look at their previous losses…

      Griffin lost to:
Rashad (became the UFC light heavyweight champion)
Anderson Silva (#1 p4p fighter in the world)

      Tito lost to:
Chuck (when he was still in his prime IMO)
Lyoto (Light heavyweight champion, maybe still the top LHW in the world)
and a draw against Rashad, which I think Tito won that fight…so..

Forrest will almost always be main event material IMO
Tito is one of the most well known fighters in the world…

Im getting sick and tired of hearing people talk about the UFC this way. Saying theyre only about entertainment, they fix fights, they lie about their fighters and all that bull. Its ridiculous.

Also, Bisping vs. Kang isnt main event material IMO. Even if it is a free televised card. But idk we’ll see what happens

      • T3chn3tnium says:

pretty sure couture/vera is the main event..

      • JENKINS! says:

        Look at Jason S. comment…
he said this: “PS…. THIS IS THE UFC and you’re telling me two guys with a combined record of 0-4-1 in there last few fights are HEADLINING a $55 ppv. This is just more proof that the UFC is becomeing more for ENTERTAINMENT and less of a sport. They should move Randy and Vera to this card and let Bisping headline the england card.”

I know the main event is Vera/Couture….I was replying to his comment..

      • JoeSama Bin Rogan says:

Maybe we should see what Chuck and Ace are up to that weekend.

    • Andrew says:

It is not official what the headline will be

  • Jon says:

105 and 106 are looking pretty weak right now. It will be interesting to see what shuffling the UFC does or if they are content to just stock up the end-of-the-year cards. 108 as is at the moment looks like one of the best cards in recent memory.

  • Nbm05 says:

Leaving aside the dissapointment that the Brock-Carwin fight is delayed –

it doesn’t work for me at all to simply take a fight that was already on the card and suddenly try to promote it as a viable main event. Not for $55.

I love the UFC. Love MMA. Really enjoy watching live fights. But I have a hard enough time justifying $55 bucks for three hours entertainment every month or two as is. 106 looked like a great card and I was going to get it because it had enough fights I wanted to see. Now the fight I wanted to see the most is off the card, it isn’t being replaced, and one of the undercard bouts is suddenly being considered worthy of carying a PPV when just yesterday it wasn’t. The card just doesn’t look worth $55 bucks anymore. If they could somehow add Machida/Rua I’d get it without question, but as others have said that’s highly unlikely.

Anyway, if Brock is sick, not the UFC’s fault, but they need to step up and replace the fight with a comparable fight, not just move an undercard fight to the top of the show. I enjoy watching both Tito and Forest, but with where they are right now, their fight is not a $55 PPV main event.

  • Lex415 says:

Sorry Mods, didn’t know my comment was overboard. Also, didn’t realize everyone had my same frame of mind!

  • dontbedone says:

if it has to be this way fine, i would rather lesnar miss the fight if illness is preventing him from preparing properly…. better than if he fought and the news of him being sick come after the fact if he lost… seems like that happened in the nogueira mir fight where big nog was coming of staph i believe and claimed to be weakened..

not saying big nog was using excuses, i just think when these two big men lesnar and carwin get together they should be as healthy as possible… makes for the best show possible

  • RussoC13 says:

i was planning on ordering 106 but not after this.. i dont think ortiz is that good anymore so forrest is probably going to embarass him.. and i dont care to watch any of the other match-ups.. but now 108 looks like the best fight card of the year especially if the ufc throws silva and belfort into that card.. cant wait to see what happens

  • love4thedead says:

This is most unfortunate I was looking forward to this fight. Reguardless of this disappointment this is still a hella card. I still look forward to these just like I do every month cuz I love this sport. Plus I been waiting for the natuaral to return to light heavy.

  • Jdubb says:

It better be FREE cuz i am not paying for Ortiz and Forrest… No way no how…

  • JENKINS! says:

I love being able to pay $10 to watch the fights haha.
So I dont have to worry about whether its free or not.

    • Nbm05 says:

How do you pay $10? For ten bucks I’d order PPV’s weekly if they had them.

      • JENKINS! says:

Because I go to the fox & hound (restaurant and bar) to watch them. They only charge $10. So you get to watch fights for cheap, and eat great food. I prefer wings and cheese fries.

      • love4thedead says:

Wow a cover for the fights I feel lucky than I can go watch them for free where I’m at

      • JENKINS! says:

Yeah you are lucky. However I am also lucky. The people who arent lucky are the ones who have to pay $50 to watch.
Not that it isnt worth it…Im just saying..

      • love4thedead says:

I don’t think we see Machida Rua 2 for a bit has medical suspension even been issued yet.

      • Bharris4 says:

@JENKINS, it isnt that bad ordering at home especially if you plan on eating and drinking, its cheaper than gettin drunk at the bar. Also its nice to be able to hear the commentators as the bars are pretty loud

      • dbiz says:

Jenkins…that sounds suspiciously like you are local to me, unless that is a chain.

      • EtherBunny says:

I like the atmosphere at the fox but the food is just horrible, IMO.

  • Gunslinger says:

half you guys need to shut it lesnar is not scared of carwin and i hate lesnar…lesnar is really sick, he truly loves fighting theres no reason for him to be scared he doesnt want money or fame all he wants to do is to fight…..let lesnar fight….and the guy who said H1N1 only lasts 5-6 days knows nothing because i have a friend who has it and it lasted close to a month

  • love4thedead says:

I think this shows great respect for Carwin from Lesnar. He obviously respects Carwins ability and wants to be 100% plus this leaves out the I was sick excuses in case of a loss.

  • Markus J says:

    EASY SOLUTION!!!!!

Reschedule the original heavyweight matchup between Shane Carwin vs Cain Valasquez!!! Winner gets Brock in January!

I know it may seem unfair to Carwin, but it was unfair to Cain in the first place, that the original #1 contender fight was scrapped.

Cain Valasquez suffered NO damage to Rothwell, looks in tremendous shape and both fighters should already have an early scouting report on the other and a month to prepare for it!

    • dbiz says:

November and then again in January? Nope. Let’s be real here.

      • To further your point, it would be October, then November, then February.

“Suffered no damage” is one thing, but other things happen before a fight. Most fighters train to fight the guy they are fighting next, this involves preperation, analysing the fighter, and training specific skills. There is also a ramp up and ramp down cycle reguarding weight for people to bulk up, cut weight, rehydrate for a fight, and recover for the long term.

The weight issue is especially essential for heavy weights. The last thing I as a fans want to see is a HW fight where someone is tanked after 2 minutes.

  • ironfistpat says:

look…all I know is that shogun won the first fight despite the judges acid trip. This is good…nah perfect timing for their rematch. I know Shogun is back and prolly willing to do so and if Machida is the “new king” of the LHW division he should be too. He got battered a bit but if he wants too solidify his supremecy at 205 he must take this fight if given the opportunity IMO. Shogun wrote the book on how to nullify Machidas “invincible” fighting style….take out his legs for his agility and torso for his cardio…then work on the boxing. Hopefully the UFC will come up with a better headliner than Griffin vs Ortiz 2. Thats a co-main event at best

  • dawger says:

Wow, I want a refund for UFC 106 now. What are my chances?

  • russiandoeboi says:

    cain vs carwin.

win or lose, brock will have to fight the loser anyway.

and if somebody better than the loser seems to be deserving it come time…
    like maybe
-gonzaga, kongo with some serious wrestling prep, or even overeem-is he free to join ufc now?

its way to soon for machida. i’d be impressed if he said yes. it’d suck for shogun machida and their families.
it’d suck for the LHW champ whoever that’d be because they’d have to fight again in 3-4 months

  • jcohl says:

Someone commented that the judges for the Machida-Rua fight were acid tripping, and maybe so.
While I won’t deny their decision was dodgey, I’d have to say that some of YOU are acid tripping if you think that either Machida and Rua will be ready to rematch in 4 weeks, or if you think that Brock Lesnar isn’t looking forward to throwing Shane Carwin a beating and ending all of this “Carwin wears 6XL gloves!” noise.

Think about it for a second. Reasonably, and not like a middle schooler.
Does Brock Lesnar SEEM like the type of guy that DOESN’T enjoy beating the sh!t out of people and getting paid big bank for it?
Has Lesnar EVER in his legitimate sporting life reportedly swerved a match or fight?
    And really? Vaginosis?
THATS what we’re going with on this thing?
C’mon guys, this is the frenZy. Start posting like it.

Its more likely Lesnar has contracted some sort of harsh influenza-type deal, and is having trouble shaking it as Dana said.
All I can say if whatever Lesnar has contracted puts down a Neanderthal like him, it would probably send a normal man to either the hospital or the morgue…

  • chrisl says:

Just a thought here guys but I’d be willing to bet that Carwin appreciates this more than anyone(even if he doesn’t admit it) because it’s truly a catch 22 for both guys. Mostly because if Lesnar did fight after a lengthy illness and lost he’d have a reason for losing that people would just call an excuse, and if Carwin is a true sportsman(which I believe he is) then he’d rather fight Lesnar after a good camp rather than one cut short by illness. Since if he wins he’s going to have to face Lesnar again (and soon) and if Carwin had lost to Lesnar on the original date, then he’d have to live with the talk of Lesnar beat him at only 40%, which would be an embarrassment to anyone.

Since I truly believe Lesnar has been sick I am glad he pulled out of this card because as a fan I’d rather see him go in ready than go in unprepared and put on a bad show.

  • fr702 says:

Here is Carwin’s response via his twitter account…

“I just heard from Jason. Looks like it is posponed till Jan 2. I had h1ni myself and I understand how devastaing it can be.”

    • chrisl says:

considering I’m just now getting back to full training pace(and it’s been a month since I recovered) there’s no way he’d be ready. Just swimming from class to class in the weeks after was brutal(gotta love Atlanta). Wish him a speedy recovery.

    • nickageb says:

didnt dana say that its not h1n1? cant imagine why he would lie for spin

      • chrisl says:

Actually it hasn’t been confirmed as H1N1, there are tons of different strains of the Flu virus out there, H1N1 is the most common strain at this time. The test is faulty for this bug though(my initial test was negative, and I was in the hospital) and in all honesty anyone coming in with Flu like symptoms is often being treated as having H1N1. The confirmed cases of H1N1 are mostly hitting people below the age of 25 and lesnar is out of that age bracket so it is unlikely that it was H1N1. However, any version of the flu will drop you the only difference between H1N1 and the flu now is that it’s hitting younger rather than older groups of people.

  • animosity says:

While it’s disappointing to hear the news, we will for sure see these guys fight. I’m not to happy with the product they are offering with this fight off the card. It’s not worth ordering the ppv with these rumored MAIN card bouts. But will I still order it, he!! Yeah cause I can’t get enough MMa an I’m a REAL fan.

I can almost guarantee Dana will come up with a replacement bout that’s close to being what this fight was supposed to be. HOPEFULLY GET’ ER DONE DANA

  • underhooks says:

I really like this site as it’s great for breaking news and the mix of people on the forums seem quite knowlegable. Well done Frenzy. However the moderators seem quite anal at times with their editing . I can appreciate personal attacks won;t be tolerated but if someone is messing about sending a jokey message ie the ones above then why do you have edit them and come over all autocratic, the posters themselves look like idiots you don’t have to save them a job. My only bug bear with this site, what ever happened to freedom of speech

    • Eldiablo says:

Without the anal mods this site would look like all the other troll-infested MMA sites out there. This site prides itself on being clean, accurate, and intelligent.

And technically this place is not an autocracy (power of one), it’s more of an oligarchy (power of a few).

I do what I believe is best for MMAFRENZY.COM, it is NOTHING personal, and honestly (for me) long standing members get more time to express themselves and well I will put up with more from them than most people… With the growth of the site (which is awesome) unfortunately people will try to make this a site it is not, either by what some would consider “trolling” or just comming on here to “personally attack” other posters…. Mind you it is not like I’m sitting back on my computer (either one) or my BlackBerry and just banning or deleting accounts. • Justin H says:

I get where you’re coming from, and we let some stuff slide, but we don’t stand for personal attacks on posters or fighters, which includes fighter bashing. Generally speaking fighter bashing constitutes statements about a fighter that either have nothing to do with his skill, or can’t be substantiated with any valid argument. In the case of saying that Lesnar got a case of “vaginosis” which implies that he “pussed out,” there is no evidence anywhere that Lesnar has done or would do any such thing. The fact that the guy tried out for the NFL after never having played even college ball, and the fact that he came to Dana White and basically told him, “Throw me to the wolves, I want to find out if I can actually do this or not,” would indicate that he is not someone inclined to “vaginosis”. Therefore, those claims were unsubstantiated and I deemed them to constitute bashing.

Along those same lines, Lesnar is a lightning rod already, and when I see people using “vaginosis” within the first five posts on a story, I need to “nip it in the bud” before the thread goes crazy and we’re looking at placing people on moderation or ban.

  • Eldiablo says:

This really blows the big one. I was looking foreward to the next few weeks: Bills game in Buffalo this Sunday, going to Chicago for Strikeforce the next, then a so-so UFC 105 the next weekend, topped off by my boy Lesnar destrominating Carwin.

Working in a hospital, I can tell you that there are various degrees of the H1N1 (if it were that cut-and-dry, you think global governments would be spending billions on vaccines?). It might not even be swine flu, lasting that long it could be a real bad flu, could be pnemonia (which is terrible), or could be chicken pox if the guy never got them as a kid (which can be killer if you’re an adult). What’s important is that Brock takes care and gets back to terminator-like form.

  • underhooks says:

oligarchy, thanks for putting me straight.

  • underhooks says:

Dbiz, i don’t really care for the second amendment not being from the US but i have read it none the less, however where i live we can say what we please without being moderated. If you want to look like an idiot than your posts will show you’re an idiot, saying that i understand why the moderators want to be different from the rest and respect to them.

There;s no need for “let the big boys talk”, like you’re so important, we are all equals, your comment just shows your ignorance.

sho cares about lesnar? look how much he cares about his fellow competitors – see his behaviour at ufc 87 and ufc 100.(and the countdown show). he even showed his unprofessionalism and lack of care for the fans, he has also said in interviews in real fighter magazine that he hates autograph and Q and A sessions with fans and looks for an early exit. he acts this way and treatas people this way with impunity, but he’s such a swell guy? come on!!! not to fighter bash, but just think about it for a moment.
