Paulo Thiago vs. Newcomer Jacob Volkmann On Tap for UFC 106

Paulo ThiagoA welterweight matchup between Paulo Thiago and newcomer Jacob Volkmann has been added to the upcoming UFC 106 card on November 21 in Las Vegas, according to Terra.

Thiago (11-1) had been scheduled to fight Thiago Alves at UFC 107, but was pulled from the matchup in favor of having Alves rematch Jon Fitch at the December 19 event in Memphis and will instead return to action next month. He made a splash in his UFC debut with a first-round knockout of Josh Koscheck in February, but dropped the first fight of his career to Jon Fitch in July at UFC 100.

Volkmann (9-0), who trains at Minnesota Martial Arts Academy alongside Brock Lesnar and Sean Sherk, improved to 9-0 in May with a first-round submission of Kevin Knabjian at Bellator 6.

UFC 106 is headlined by heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin and also includes Tito Ortiz vs. Forrest Griffin and Luiz Cane vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

Not to catagorize Paulo Thiago as any sort of gatekeeper, but he’s a He11a tough intro fight into the UFC for Volkmann, regardless of where he trains or who he trains with…

I’m on my iPhone right now and haven’t yet signed up or checked out the forums. So that said, on a completely unrelated topic, is there any truth to the rumour I heard this morning that shogun is gonna be in Edmonton, ab, Canada for a meet and greet this Sunday, november 1st? Just curious… Sorry for the means by which I seek an answer, but any chance you guys could confirm this?

  • oldman420 says:

I didn’t hear that but I know GSP is comming pretty soon to The Manor Ultralounge, in Edmonton. This city loves it’s MMA, wouldn’t suprise me if someone was bringing in Shogun these guys are big draws and good for business.

  • ckdiesel says:

yeah thiago kinda picked his own poison by knocking out kos, dana probably wanted to quicktrack koscheck to a rematch with GSP after his loss to alves, and he wasnt supposed to ko him. but glad to see that thiago is not getting fed to the lions after all, and has a chance to get some experience before taking on bigger names like fitch or alves.

  • Lex415 says:

Thiago is good. Fitch worked him but couldn’t finish him. I think Fitch was too strong for him. Good match up for Thiago.

  • mmaman says:

I’m sorry but I like Paulo and how he fights, he doesn’t wuss out. Against Kos he was in their trading even though it was obvious he was losing the standup battle, he wasn’t afraid to get knocked out. thats what the ufc needs.

  • Jason says:

Thiago goes down in this one. Volkmann will begin his ascent to the top

  • Justin says:

One at a time Volkmann will tear them apart!
