Daniel Cormier is the reigning, UFC Light-Heavyweight Champion, but for a few moments at UFC 187 last weekend, it looked like that wasn’t going to be the case,
If you saw the memorable fight, then you know that not long into the May 23rd bout, Johnson floored Cormier with a booming right hand. It wasn’t the only terrifying shot that was launched at Cormier either.
Cormier recovered, weathered the storm, and put his vaunted wrestling game into action. After “DC” battered Johnson with ground-and-pound strikes in round two, he sealed the deal with a third round, rear-naked-choke.
Well, in the latest episode of “UFC Tonight“, Cormier was of course asked about his championship victory, and here is some of what he had to say about the fight and “Rumble” (quotes via FOX Sports 1 press release):
“The game plan was to try to implement wrestling, make him go hard and make him go long. You can wear out guys with a lot muscle. The grind can wear out the arms. But he hit me hard. That wasn’t a right hand that hit me, that was a missile shot out of a rocket launcher. He’s a stud. He’s confident and hits hard.”
“I just want to say thank you Anthony Johnson. You see many guys win and then the belt is put around the waist by Dana White. Johnson did that and made my time special. I thank him for being the classy guy he is. I said a lot of good things about him before the fight.”
Yup. There’s no question Johnson is one of the most dangerous guys in the division, and for that matter, the sport. Which, of course, makes Cormier’s victory that much more importance.
It will be interesting to see how Cormier looks against Ryan Bader, as barring the quick return of Jon Jones, one would think the UFC will book that fight (considering all the ‘tension’ between the two).
It’s also going to be intriguing to see who the UFC taps to fight Johnson next, who prior to facing Cormier, had won nine in a row.
