Thiago Alves Tapped to Rematch Jon Fitch at UFC 107

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Oct 22, 2009 at 4:01 pm ET33 Comments

Thiago AlvesAfter an injury forced Ricardo Almeida to withdraw from their scheduled UFC 106 fight, Jon Fitch is now expected to rematch Thiago Alves at UFC 107 on December 12 in Memphis, Tennessee, according to MMAjunkie, which reports that the welterweight matchup is in the works, while Alves’ original UFC 107 opponent, Paulo Thiago, will be booked for another bout.

In their first meeting at UFC Fight Night 5 in mid-2006, Fitch earned a second-round technical knockout of Alves.

Fitch (19-3) reeled off a record eight-straight wins to begin his UFC career, but had his 15-fight win streak snapped with a unanimous decision loss to welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre last August. The American Kickboxing Academy fighter has bounced back in 2009 with back-to-back wins over Akihiro Gono and Paulo Thiago.

Alves (16-6) won seven-straight over the likes of Chris Lytle, Josh Koscheck, and Matt Hughes, but is coming off a unanimous decision loss to St-Pierre in July at UFC 100.

The matchup joins BJ Penn vs. Diego Sanchez, Kenny Florian vs. Clay Guida, Cheick Kongo vs. Frank Mir, and Paul Buentello vs. Todd Duffee on the UFC 107 main card.

Niiiiiice this fight makes way more sense then Hughes. Both guys took GSP 5 rounds, and it gives Alves a chance to redeem himself. Also it gives you a clear cut #1 for a rematch with the greatness. Love it.

    107 looks stacked

Now this is gonna be a good rematch. Im gonna have to go for fitch in this because he is well rounded and has a hard chin. Alves is a beast and does have the ability to KO fitch if he catches him but I dont see it happening. I see alves winning a standup fight at first then gettin taken down and ground and pounded until he taps

My god the UFC loves rematches.

  • Bzul3 says:

Awesome match! This is great for everyone. Alves and Fitch both deserve this match because now we can have a real number 1 contender instead of that “Swick vs Hardy” crap. And Paulo Thiago can finally get a reasonable match up for himself.
Although I will be going for Alves, I just think that Fitch is a beast and I cant see Alves winning this fight. Also Fitch has had time to regain his confidence after the beating he took from GSP and hes the more skilled “Mixed Martial Artist”. I just dont think this matchup holds well for Alves. He just got dominated by GSP, and now he has to fight the other man that has beat him in the UFC. Im pretty sure his confidence will not hold well, especially when he finds out that Fitch wont fold. But its a great match none the less.
The winner of this is the true number 1 contender.

Hey MK(4) give me some cred I think I called it !!

  • ufcmanz says:

Yes this is going to be a great fight ,both of them have improved so much sense there last encounter

If Fitch wins, it only makes sense that he gets the next title shot before the Swick / Hardy winner. With his 3rd win in 3 fights over 3 good opponents ; Akihiro Gono , Paulo Thiago and Thiago Alves.

But if Alves wins I believe he should take on the winner of Swick / Hardy fight for the #1 Contendership. That being the only fight that would make sense if he beats Fitch.

  • MarvelKnight says:

i think i called this fight a few hours ago

  • Jerry says:

I love this fight…..I dont think Fitch will control Alves on the ground like he did their last fight, not sure if it was GSP injury but Alves did a decent job getting back to his feet when taken down by GSP. I will be pulling for Alves and if he wins his next fight should be Swick to try for an AKA Trifecta, sorry had to do that haha, but thats why they fight, Great Card.

  • ruraltakedown says:

wow cant wait awsome card and fight both men will be hungry for this win…going to be a good scrap. i dont see fitch stopping alves but he could pull of a dec win.. alves has changed so much since their last battle i can see him TKOing fitch…and for everyone i think most people called this fight lol… ye i do agree if fitch wins he shuld get a title shot and if alves he should get hardy/swick, but if that hapens well hav to wait a while to see the great one get back into the octogon to defend his crown

  • MarvelKnight says:

Actually…….really thinking about it i think i called this fight back after Fitch got beat by GSP, so yeah you know what i really think i called this fight :D

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

i say fitch grinds out a UD or a late tko. mayb he can even pull out a flyin atomic butt drop like he did against diego

  • bigmike12 says:

Great rematch. Close fight all the way around. I’m gonna say that alves has evolved since their first fight enough to sprawl and brawl. His stand up is excellent and I think the pitbull takes this one via 3rd round tko or UD

  • jcohl says:

Glad to see these 2 rematch, and really glad to see the AKA set told to fu<k off with their constant whining for one of their men to face Matt Hughes.
I honestly don't think either fighter has changed all that much, so assuming that both men are healthy and execute their gameplans, I don't see why Fitch shouldn't win this fight like he did the first one…

  • animosity says:

Im sorry Frenzy, but I read that Dan Henderson demanded to be “by far” the highest paid fighter in the UFC should he sign. Is something not wrong with that?

  • drew1313 says:

i think swick should get a title shot before fitch gets another one……swick has a lot of wins under his belt….not sayin he’s a better fighter than fitch, i just think he’s paid his dues to get a shot….maybe the winner of fitch / alves could be top contender after that match(of which i believe alves will win via KO)………just my 2 cents……thoughts?

    • jcohl says:

Who in your opinion has Mike Swick beaten to earn a shot against GSP?
Names like Burkman, Goulet, Davis, and Saunders aren’t exactly the upper echelon of the 170 weightclass.
For that matter neither is Dan Hardy, who Swick throws down with at 105.
Swick needs to beat someone like Martin Kampmann [Paul Daley notwithstanding], Thiago Alves, or even teammate Jon Fitch before he thinks of stepping in with the finest 170er on the planet…

      • sempeckx2 says:

You cant blame Swick for that 9-1 in the UFC and still his next fight is vs Hardy. The man has a title shot worthy win streak and finishes most of his fights. Granted i think Alves and Fitch are higher caliber fighters but swick has proved hes a punch away from upsetting anybody including THE GREATNESS himself GSP.

  • kody503 says:

i see fitch winning by up-kick!! ha ha!! jk should be a better fight now they both have been killin fools!!

  • ckdiesel says:

lol, funny how they want to be “fair” to fitch now after they subsequently cut him after that whole video game thing, and once resigned was moved to undercard fights. yes, lets be fair to fitch now that he wont be fighting another top contender.

    • fr702 says:

honestly Zinkin Entertainment tried to “strong arm” Dana White and ZUFFA which then led to Fitch getting cut along with the possibility of all AKA fighters getting cut and anyone with ties to Zinkin Entertainment (excluding Chuck Liddell, in which Zinkin Entertainment only represents him on clothing deals not tied to TapouT) Fitch then saw the contract that Zinkin Entertainment turned down and made crazy acusations about, and well Fitch signed it along with all of AKA (or AKA members that fight in the UFC)……

As far as Fitch v Gono being the swing bout @ UFC 94 well in all honesty that bout had decision written all over it, and with the main card containing mostly fights that were likely to go to a decision, it is understandable that Fitch v Gono was the swing bout.. Hell with GSP v Penn going 4 rounds and Machida getting the only main card stoppage that was a long drawn out card…. I believe that a majority of people make a bigger deal out of the Fitch (Zinkin Entertainment)/ AKA against the UFC, then really should be made……..
