Anthony Pettis Says Khabib Nurmagomedov Needs to “Humble Himself”

A couple of months ago, much of the talk surrounding the lightweight division was tied to Anthony Pettis and Khabib Nurmagomedov, and how a bout between the two would unfold. Of course, since Pettis lost the title to Rafael dos Anjos in March and Nurmagomedov recently went down with another knee injury, buzz regarding that fight has died down. But, does that mean the two no longer have issues with each other? Of course not.

In recent months Nurmagomedov has thrown plenty of verbal shots Pettis’s way, and following the latter’s loss to RDA, “The Eagle” posited that the former champ “was maybe” a top ten 155ér. The grappling titan has also took a few pokes at Pettis when “Showtime” was on the disabled list.

Well, after it was revealed Nurmagomedov would no longer fight Donald Cerrone at UFC 187, Pettis relayed on Twitter that “karma is a bitch.” The dynamic striker recently spoke to MMA Sucka.com about the comment he made, and here is some of what he had to say (quotes via Mixed Martial Arts.com):

“He was talking big crap when I was injured – how I was a paper champ, and I’m scared to fight people,” said Pettis. “Injuries happen, man, and there’s nothing you can do about it. He’s got a little taste of his own medicine.

“I don’t wish injury on him. Hopefully he gets better. And if he is one of the best in the lightweight division, we should see it coming up in a couple of months here. But he needs to quiet down a little bit, humble himself and focus on getting better.”

There you have it. It would certainly be a shame if these two never meet, but considering their abilities and standing in the lightweight division, chances are it will happen at some point.

It will be interesting to see what the UFC does with Nurmagomedov when he’s ready to return. His May 23rd bout with Cerrone was expected to be a title shot eliminator, but if the latter scores a big win over John Makdessi, “Cowboy” could be tapped for a title shot.

As far as Pettis, he’s booked to fight Myles Jury at UFC on FOX 16 on July 16th. Now that’s a fight that belongs on the ‘can’t miss list’ no?
