UFC’s Dana White Says Aldo-McGregor is Similar to Mayweather-Pacquiao

As pretty much every one under the great big sun knows, Manny Pacquiao will fight Floyd Mayweather tonight, in what probably will be one of the highest grossing sporting events ever….So much so, HBO’s Jim Lampley relayed during yesterday’s weigh-ins that the fight’s revenue is going to surpass the gross national product of some countries.  Now that is some serious, serious cash.

Of course, UFC boss man Dana White is a huge boxing fan, and while speaking to the media recently, he was asked about the historic fight. White acknowledged that the bout is going to be massive, and while wearing his UFC promoter hat, he also stated this (quote via MMA Fighting.com):

“The difference in MMA is that we always do the fights, the big fights that guys wanna see. Right now, our fight like that is Conor McGregor and Jose Aldo,” he said. “You saw the reception with the world tour that we did. We did seven million dollars… You’re talking about featherweight that did seven million dollars for gate, which will be the biggest gate that we’ve ever done in the United States.

“In North America was 11 million. Think about this: we did an $11 million gate in Toronto, with Georges St-Pierre, and 56,000 people. This one here has 16,000 people and a $7 million gate, so it’s a pretty big fight.”

Now sure, Aldo-McGregor isn’t going to come anywhere near Mayweather-Pacquiao in terms of gate, pay-per-views and revenue etc, but it does look like it’s going to be a huge fight for the UFC. Is it on par with Mayweather-Pacquiao? In terms of what Aldo and McGregor have accomplished? Well, Aldo is the greatest featherweight of all time, and McGregor is on the rise, but no. And that isn’t a slight against “Notorious”, he just hasn’t been competing in the UFC for very long.

GSP vs. Anderson Silva though? Especially if it had taken place say two years ago? Now that would have been a huge, huge and historic fight for the UFC and MMA.

Mayweather-Pacquiao will go down tonight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, which is the same venue that will host UFC 189 and Aldo-McGregor.
