UFC 186: Johnson Armbars Horiguchi With 1 Second Left

UFC 186

In a dominant performance from the UFC flyweight champion, Demetrious Johnson picked up the submission victory over Japan’s Kyoji Horiguchi with one second left in the fight.

Johnson’s takedown game was on point as he put Horiguchi on the mat at will throughout the entire contest. Despite a few blitzes and body kicks from Horiguchi early on that put Johnson on caution alert, the fight was all Johnson.

Mighty Mouse never let Horiguchi get comfortable striking at range as he kept up with the pressure and smothered the Japanese fighter in the clinch – putting Horiguchi in pure defense mode. Johnson had to fight hard to keep Kyoji on the mat, but in doing so the champion slowly siphoned the gas tank of Horiguchi making the takedowns come easier and easier.

In the fifth round, Johnson slammed Horiguchi to the mat and went for the kill. After trapping Horiguchi in a crucifix and looking for the stoppage due to strikes, Johnson abandoned that approach and instead locked up the fight-ending armbar.

Horiguchi was forced to tap with a fraction of a second left. Making it the latest possible finish in UFC history, and probably ever.
