In a back-and-forth contest between two weathered, experience fighters in Patrick Cote and Joe Riggs, it was the hometown favorite in Cote that got the edge on the scorecards.
Known for his grit and stand-up abilities, Patrick Cote showcased a more mature approach to MMA this time around. Cote relied on sweeps and top control to smother Riggs en-route to his unanimous decision victory.
Riggs looked for takedowns and even had Cote’s back a couple times throughout the fight, but Cote showed his strong will as he fought Riggs off and turned into top position. From there, Cote mixed up punishing ground-and-pound, guard passes, and even a few submission attempts to rack up judge’s favor.
Even though it was Cote who got the better of the ground exchanges, it was Riggs that was the one initiating most of the takedowns – and he got them rather successfully. But it was the scrambling ability of Cote that was able to turn the tides and get the fight into a favorable position.
Riggs had his moments though; particularly a big right hand in a wild exchange to start the second stanza, and a few rear-naked choke attempts throughout the course of the contest, but once again, Patrick “The Predator” Cote showcased how much he has matured as a fighter.
