Alistair Overeem Believes Anthony Johnson Isn’t “Versatile” Enough to Beat Jon Jones

Anthony Johnson may be one of the most punishing strikers in the sport, but according to Alistair Overeem, his former teammate will be over matched and outgunned when he takes on Jon Jones.

As you know, Johnson has been booked to challenge the light-heavyweight champ on May 23rd, thanks to a impressive and violent, nine fight winning streak. Most recently, Johnson and his heavy hands quickly put away Alexander Gustafsson, who most believe provided Jones his stiffest test to date.

Well, recently Overeem spoke to Bloody Elbow.com, and during the interview, the decorated heavyweight was asked to weigh-in Jones-Johnson. Overeem proceeded to say he was going with Jones, and when asked if that’s because he’s his Jackson-Wink teammate, “The Reem” stated:

[Laughs] No, it’s also because he is more proven. He has done it over and over and over again. Indeed I have trained with both, and Jon Jones is more versatile. Anthony Johnson is very explosive, very athletic, but he’s not versatile. Besides his hands, he has nothing else. He has his hands, and he’s very fast and explosive. Besides that, he has nothing. Jon has the submissions, has the wrestling, takedowns, and he has the mind.

Now sure, some will point out that Overeem and Johnson haven’t exactly had glowing things to say about each other recently. But, even the biggest “Rumble” boosters have to admit that Jones is ridiculously well rounded, and has cruise through noted sluggers in the past (see his bout with Glover Teixeira).

May 23rd’s going to be an interesting night. UFC 187 will be hosted by the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and it will also feature middleweight champ Chris Weidman taking on Vitor Belfort.
