It wasn’t long ago when Hector Lombard was possibly one win away from locking up a title shot, but thanks to a failed drug test, the feared fighter’s rise has come to a screeching halt.
Yes, as fans will recall, following Lombard’s decision win over Josh Burkman at UFC 182, he was booked to fight Rory MacDonald at UFC 185. The victory was Lombard’s third straight, since he elected to drop down from middleweight.
But, after the Nevada Commission announced Lombard had allegedly positive for steroids, the 37 year-old was hit with a one year suspension. Now, it remains to be seen who and when exactly, Lombard will fight again.
During his commission hearing last month, Lombard claimed he had been misinformed about a pill he took, and therefore, he didn’t know he was taking PEDs. In the latest episode of “The MMA Hour”, the former Bellator champ maintained his innocence (quotes via MMA Fighting.com).
“I’m very disappointed in my stupidity,” Lombard said.
“It was one of those things that was meant to happen. I never expected that a pill would have such a strong — I thought when you kind of get caught is when you’re injecting yourself with something or whatever. But she was like, this pill, you can take it over the counter and stuff like that. But obviously that was wrong.”
The decorated Judoka went on to claim that he took the pills since he was feeling ill during fight week, so much so, he could hardly speak. Lombard also believes that the commission “made an example” out of him, despite the fact he had never failed a drug test in the past.
So, there you have it. Will Lombard critics buy this defence? The welterweight also said it won’t “hurt my feelings” either way…
All this aside, it will be interesting to see how Lombard performs when he returns to action, and whether he can rebound from this setback. The American Top Team fighter isn’t eligible to fight until after January 3rd, 2016.
