Urijah Faber Now Expected to Return in January, Rafael Assuncao Possible Opponent

Urijah FaberFormer WEC featherweight champ Urijah Faber, out of action since suffering a broken hand in a June loss to Mike Brown, is now expected to return in January, the fighter announced during Saturday’s WEC 43 broadcast.

Though Faber failed to mention an opponent for the bout, it appears WEC 43 winner Rafael Assuncao is the leading candidate, as the WEC asked him at the post-fight press conference whether he’d be interested in a matchup with “The California Kid”.

“I think that would be a good fight,” Assuncao replied.

That will be a good fight, I think Faber will win, but it will be good.

Faber can’t come back quick enough for either the WEC or the 145 division.
No disrespect to Brown, or Aldo, or any other competing 145er, but this division, and some would say the WEC, is all about Faber at this point, so he needs to get back pronto…

Perhaps to the casual fan (and no I’m not calling you a casual fan) the WEC is “all about Faber”, but something tells me that if you are into the WEC you probably aren’t the most casual fan… I will state that Miguel Torres and Urijah Faber are perhaps the “face” of the organization but after WEC 43 last Saturday its clear that the WEC are “growing” more “stars” every event….

      • jcohl says:

By “all about”, I basically meant the face of the org, probably poor choice of words on my part.
And yeah, my bad for not at least mentioning Torres with Faber, but after those 2 the WEC is sort of shy on MMA household names, no?
I’m thinking that the WEC stars being “grown” today are the possible UFC fighters of tomorrow.
Finally, not to disrespect any WEC fighter, but other than Torres and Faber, who exactly do they have drawing not just money but attention?
There’s a reason that almost all Frank Mir talks about during his WEC duties is the California Kid, but I agree that the WEC is a whole lot more than the Faber and Torres show. What they need know is more fights like Henderson-Cerrone to emphasize that point…

This should be a great fight if it does actually go down. Although, i just cant see Faber losing again. Faber via Decision.

  • samantha says:

Faber vs Aldo. Once Nov. 19th comes, aldo will have the title. I want brown vs faber III, I think urijah could win this time. then he should have a title shot. ever since I saw Aldo I wanted him to fight urijah

    make it happen wec!
