Matt Serra vs. Frank Trigg Possible for UFC 109 in February
Welterweights Matt Serra and Frank Trigg could square off on February 6 at UFC 109, according to Fanhouse, which reports that Trigg is the front-runner to fight Serra.
The pay-per-view event is likely to take place in Las Vegas and is also expected to feature Matt Hughes.
Serra (9-6) has fought just twice since his shocking upset of welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre in April 2007, dropping back-to-back bouts to St-Pierre in April 2008 and Hughes in May.
Trigg (19-7) returned to the Octagon last month after winning four-straight and 7 of 9 since leaving the UFC in 2005, but suffered a first-round knockout at the hands of Josh Koscheck.

Very interesting match up. I think this will definately be a loser gets cut match.
We’ve kicked this around the frenZy before, and I think most of us agreed that this is not just a logical match-up, but is marketable in that “winner keeps his job” sort of way…
i like the matchup, but i just dont see why serra keeps fighting at 170 he’s to small for this division and he could really cause a “terror” at lw imo….get it cause a “terror”
I think most of the frenZy cognoscenti agree that Serra could prolong his career at 155, the way Jens Pulver did at 145…

The problem is, Serra got up to around 200 while he was out with his back injury.
great fight !…..serra by KO based only on the fact that he gave matt hughes a heck of a fight and trigg never made it to a decsion

Serra by KO. Fluke or not this is a man who is one of only two people to beat GSP. A feat that even at his best could never do.
While I think Trigg’s overrated, I also feel that Serra is typically outmatched at WW. I can see Trigg eeking out a decision win in this one.
I seem to be the only one that doesn’t really like this fight. Both these guys are on their way out IMO so it’s just prolonging the inevitible for one of them
This is an interesing matchup, and it could certainly gain some serious attention from legit MMA fans. I like the idea of the loser getting cut from the UFC.
Although I honestly dont know if the UFC would cut Serra. Seeing how he has history with the UFC. And especially after he won TUF: Comeback. If he loses, I think Dana or someone needs to sit down and talk to Matt and tell him he needs to move down to 155.
However, with all that being said, I dont see Trigg winning this fight if it indeed does go down in February. Serra has KO power, we all know that, but I dont think that will play a huge role. I think it will be his awesome bjj that gets him the victory. Lets think about Triggs track record….

You add all that up…then throw in the factor of Serra’s amazing bjj….the only way I see this fight ending is with Trigg tapping out to a choke IMO. I know Trigg has good wrestling and pretty good Judo. But he wont be able to handle Serra’s jitz.
Yeah Serra is gonna win. Trigg seriously looked like crap in the couple of minutes we got to see him against Kos. He took like one punch and he was done after that.
I think this could be a pretty good fight. Lots of incentive for both of them to win. However, if Serra could make 155, I see a lot brighter future for him.
I see serra winning but i could see Trigg putting up a fight… nothin is a givin saying serra is gonna win because there is always a chance for a knockout by trigg but i honestly think serra will submit him..

Trigg has fought more, recently than Serra has.
Whats the point?Yea it might be marketable as jochl stated above(fight for your job prospect)but either way neither guy has much of a future at ww,as far as being a serious threat.But on the same token there both big names with some marketability.So if it creates conversation why not.

This is a good match up I like it and it has one implication I’m suprised none of have touched on. Now this a if a very big if. If Triggs wins I believe it sets up Hughes Triggs 3 which would be highly marketable for the UFC.

Serra has lost two in a row, but they were to GSP and Hughes! And I STILL say he beat HUGHES!! I’ll say it again…he beat Matt Hughes.
Anyway…Trigg should stay just because he’s Twinkle Toes. No ammount of losses can take that away from him.
