Although Conor McGregor has repeatedly insulted Jose Aldo, the featherweight champ’s coach sounds pretty grateful for the hype the brash fighter’s been able to generate.
Since McGregor has arrived in the UFC, the Irish fighter has verbally trashed nearly every single featherweight contender, including the champ. McGregor and Aldo recently completed the UFC 189 World Championship Tour, which made frequent headlines due to the various incidents and verbal clashes that ensued.
So, one would think that Aldo’s renowned coach, Andre Pederneiras, might have nothing but bad things to say about McGregor right? Well, here is some of what he had to say about the rising fighter recently (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“I joked about it, but it is happening: Conor is a leprechaun bringing a pot of money to the division,” Pederneiras told Combate. “I wish there were more athletes like him to get some attention. Not only in Aldo’s division, but also at (Renan) Barao’s, at Demetrious Johnson’s. Athletes like McGregor bring attention. Unlike many that talk a lot, Conor proved what he says. We’re treating this fight like a big challenge for Aldo.”
Interesting to hear him say Conor “proved what he says’ no? And there’s no question that McGregor has raised the profile of the UFC’s featherweight division immensely. Although McGregor hasn’t fought everyone Pederneiras thinks he should have faced to get a title shot, the Nova Uniao coach credited “Notorious” for finishing fights, and admitted he deserves a crack, since Aldo has defeated all of the other top contenders.
Pederneira also said “The more McGregor talks, the more he will get beat up. It’s fine by me if he talks, we think most of the things he says are funny. We’re just waiting to see how he’s going to act on fight day.”
Yup. It should be a massive fight. The bout will headline the July 11th, UFC 189 card, which will be hosted by the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
