Wanderlei Silva: Anderson Silva Will Destroy Vitor Belfort

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Oct 8, 2009 at 3:00 pm ET34 Comments

Wanderlei Silva“I believe Anderson would destroy Belfort.I think it’s a very interesting fight. Belfort has good boxing skills and is a good athlete, but everybody knows that he has a weak psychological aspect and I think he will shake when he gets in the Octagon with (Silva).

Of course [Belfort and I] will fight. I want this fight too much. I believe the first one didn’t happen as I wanted. I was surprised, and it will not happen again now because I’m much more experienced. I’m not saying it will be now or later, but when it happens, I’ll prepare myself a lot to be in my best shape because he is a tough opponent, and I want to give the show everybody expects from me.

[Anderson Silva and I] talked. It was a big misunderstanding and it was solved the way men have to solve any problem: talking face to face. Anderson is a great guy, and we finally put a period on that story.”

Wanderlei Silva talks to Sherdog about the January 2 matchup between middleweight champ Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort at UFC 108, a likely future rematch with Belfort, and mending his relationship with Silva.

Wand may of course be correct, and no disrespect intended towards him, but he might be mistaking the old Vitor Belfort with the new, Xtreme Couture’d version of Belfort, who probably has a stronger fight psyche working out with men like the Natural…

  • t3chn3tnium says:

funny. i think wand will be destroyed by vitor. by very convincing fashion.

  • As much as i love Wanderlei Silva i have to disagree with what he said because Vitor is a new man with a whole new everything, his skills are much improved all around and most important he’s shaken off those personal demons that were messing him up, he now has a new overall view and perspective on life and fighting and this new Vitor can prove to be more matture and wiser in the octagon than the old Vitor, i can even see Anderson underestimating Vitor and getting careless but we’ll see, non the less Silva will not destroy Vitor IMO.

    • jcohl says:

As a follow up, while the matter of Belfort-A Silva is very much in doubt, the mater of Wand-Belfort sadly is not.
Wand is a true warrior, and future Hall of Famer, but at their current relative ages, Belfort beats Wand somewhat easily at 185…

      • yeah i agree dude,

as much as i love Wanferlei and would love to see him avenge his loss to Vitor, at this stage of both of their careers as you’ve pointed out my friend, i don’t see Wanderlei beating Vitor because Vitor is still young ans has added Couture-ness to his game.

        SF in the building!

Yeah i agree dude. IMO wanderlei is not really a tough win anymore for a lot of top fighters @ 185 or 205. Take aside the fact that he’s legendary and a seasoned veteran, his game has not evolved well enough to the “ufc way” of fighting. What i mean is that he’s not as technical as the fighters and the rules are different in the ufc then they were in pride. As we saw in the lidell, rampage and franklin fights…technique put the “axe murderer” away. Belfort would whoop on him like he did in their first fight.

Wanderlei can only win by his natural style which is coming at you hella aggressively and swinging away like a mad man AND catching you. Some guys can’t handle the type of style and get overwelhemd and ktfo like jardine.

  • RLT says:

The Frenzy has had some really interesting reads with the quotes from fighters today. Kudos

  • bruceleroy says:

As good as the Spider is, I can see him getting caught one of these days doing the rope-a-dope. Anyone can get KO’d, and it doesn’t do any good if you try and drop your hands with a beast like Belfort. Not that I really see it happening, but could be the way Silva gets his first loss in a while.

  • Bo702 says:

This is a tuff one. Vitor looks redefined now. More focused, because of Xtreme or not, or both, who know, but Silva is a freak of nature. Time after time I have watched Silva and wanted an upset. He has proven time and time again that he is there to fight, and win, most of the time convincingly. I dont think, if this fight was to go off, Silva will destroy Belfort, but I do think Belfort, unless winning by a fluke knockout, will not win!

  • Bill says:

All True but I said the same thing about Forrest…

  • Bill says:

Ha Ha nah man not my fighter but I definitely was expecting a war between The Spider and Griffin and he just completely embarased him. Especially seeing Forrest beat Rampage and Shogun, I felt like he should have at least made it out of round 1.

  • windmiller says:

WOW!!!!!!!!! Justin is in a negitive mood, last few post! I know this isn’t the place for this kind of stuff but i hope eveything is ok mang?

normally yours, and about 2 or 3 other guys are the only ones that post things worth reading, and after reading your last few post it makes me think its not you? Or something is wrong!

  • ruraltakedown says:

i kind of agree with wandy..silva might destroy vitor hes got more power but no way is as quik and sharp of a striker like anderson..and i dont think anderson will let his hands down on vitor he knows he has knockout power and i dnt thnk griffin duz. vitor will hav a punchers chance no doubt but anderson is way to slick for that i see him picking vitor apart….imo

  • George says:

“It was a big misunderstanding and it was solved the way men have to solve any problem: talking face to face [in bed].”

  • chrisl says:

Ok Wandi does have a good point.

Also guys we need to put something in perspective here. It seems that now that Vitor defeated Rich Franklin that all of a sudden he is a new fighter and going to drop Anderson. What everyone seems to be forgetting is that Rich has previously wilted in the face of superior technical striking(who was that by the way?), Matt Lindland hasn’t been relevant in actual fights for years, and Terry Martin is a hard hitter but about as technical as some of Kimbo’s old foes. All I am saying is that Vitor may be a new fighter mentally and what not but things need to be put in perspective. Anderson has technically picked people apart for a long time and since Vitor likes to get that one shot before opening up he will have to press to try and land that shot. If you press with Anderson, I suggest you bring a pillow.

Vitor may win against Anderson and then I’ll be ready to give him his due but until then I am not jumping on the band wagon.

  • nickageb says:

Anderson will destroy Belfort ALMOST as bad as Belfort would destroy Wand. Wand is definitely on the decline and Belfort… verdict is still out, he might be as good as ever.

  • Justin says:

I don’t know how everyone says that Vitor will run thru Wand again. Do I think Wand will beat Vitor? No. However I think Wand is a MUCH better fighter than he was in 1998. Vitor has lost to fighters such as Tito, Chuck, Henderson and even Sakaraba who everyone knows Wand KOed twice. All I’m saying is that Wand vs. Vitor II would be a good fight I think.

  • Amped says:

I’ve watched the belfort vs franklin fight about 6-7 times now, and I think belfort’s speed/accuracy/ko power is being over-hyped, especially if you watch the slow motion replay. Wandi yes, Silva no way.

  • Aj says:

Dude this is a no contest… anderson silva is a way better technical fighter in ALL aspects… No one has better striking accuracy then Silva and when is the last time Anderson Silva has even taken real damage? Even if by some miracle Belfort is some how out striking Silva it will be taken to the ground and will be submitted by Silva…
