Jon Jones Ready to Take Matt Hamill Down at The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale
“[Matt Hamill's] going to be a big step up in competition for me and a really good test for me and I’m stoked about it.
I think his wrestling will play a factor in the fight. I usually fight guys who are Brazilian Black Belts or guys who consider themselves strikers, but with Matt being a tough wrestler, I can see that being an issue. But Matt isn’t really known for his submissions or having knockout power in his hands, so I’m just going to train every aspect of mixed martial arts and I’m excited about this fight because he’s not known for his Jiu-Jitsu and my Jiu-Jitsu is getting really good. If he ends up taking me down, I’m straight with working off of my back or getting into some scramble with him and possibly submitting him. In the boxing category, I feel like I’m faster than him and more well-rounded than him. In the kicking department, I’m working with Phil there and now I’m working into being a Muay Thai fighter, so I’m just going to go out there and mix it up in every aspect. I actually had a very good wrestling career also and I try not to doubt myself in any aspect of the sport. Doubt is where a weakness is about to come in, so I’m just ready to mix it up man. I’m ready to take him down, I’m ready to defend his takedowns and I’m just confident man. I haven’t lost and I’m always working to get better, so I have no reason to doubt myself. I just want to be an all-around great fighter.”

This will be a good right. I can’t really pick a favourite, as both these guys are getting SIGNIFICANTLY better each showing. One thing is for sure, is that both these guys bring, so this fight WILL be exciting.
This will be a good fight, but I think Jones will come out on top.
Justin that’s not me in that other post. it’s obviously someone that works at the same co. that i do…
I know, no worries.
I think we’re going to have to see a somewhat different Jon Jones than the ragdolling guy we’re used to.
Hamill has one of the highest levels of wrestling in the UFC, and I doubt that Jones is going to be able to throw him at will, the way he has with other opponents.
He may be in fact ready to “take Hamill down”, but I’ll have to see that to believe it.
On the plus side for him, Hamill’s stand-up is good but not nearly the equal of his wrestling, and Jones is definitely the faster of the two fighters, and probably has better stand-up defense.
In terms of power, I think that the slower Hamill, IF he can connect, probably hits harder than Jones, as Mark Munoz [KOoTN] can attest. On the mat Jones should work to escape ASAP, because even though he’s a decent enough wrestler, he’s not going to win the fight on the ground with Hamill, who is a 3 time former NCAA champion…
This is a very interesting match-up. A step-up for Jones for sure and as for Hamill, he was training for Brandon Vera so i’m sure he’ll be ready for this fight. As for the fight itself it’s going to toss up as to what’s going to happen.
Matt Hamill has improved his striking but he’s not as quick as Jones, Jones’s athleticism allows him to perform some sick moves that can be very effective against a guy like Matt Hamill who is always agressive and drops his hands most of the time, well a guy like Jones who has some good speed can make him pay for things like that.
Matt Hamill is a super strong dude and i feel that he should take the fight to the ground because he’s got a great wrestling base. Although he Cro-coped Munoz, he will not be able to do that to a guy as savvy as Jones is on his feet. Hamill can out muscle and out work Jones on the ground even though Jones is not that bad he still hasn’t reached the level of wrestling that Hamill posseses.
I think that Hamill will at first try to stand and feel out Jones but i think that’s when he can make a mistake that Jones can capitalize on. I would be surprisd if Jones tries to go the ground, he does have a decen all around game but he should use his youth, speed and agility to keep the fight standing and i honestly feel he can frustrate Hamill standing until Hamill gives him an opening.
Both guys need to win this fight but i think that Jones has more to gain and Hamil has more to lose being that Hamill is a bigger name and has fought bigger names than Jones has so IMO this is a must win more for Hamill than Jones, Jones can afford to lose because he’s still young but Hamill is at the point where he’s either going to move up the ladder or be the next guy from TUF that had potential but never made it over the hudle. I think being that Hamill has fought a guy like Rich Franklin Hamill should have some confidence coming into this fight because he was scheduled to fight Brandon Vera who is on a higher level than Jones.
Hamill via decision or ref stoppage
Apologies, I forgot to post my pick on my above post.
Like my boy mk4, I like Hamill by decision or ref stoppage…
I think Hamill will come out on top in this match, he is just a better fighter all around than jones, i could be wrong though.
I like this fight both guys have improved their all around skills. I’m going to give this fight to Jones I think he is to fast for Hamill, I do however believe it will be a war.
I think jones will win this fight by decision if they stay the majority on their feet. I don’t see either one of them winning by KO though. I think Hamill’s stand up defense is not crisp enough to counter or defend Jones’ unorthodox style of striking. The way he throws those spinning elbows & side-kicks are sick. But in Hamill’s defense he didn’t look bad at all against Franklin up until the point he caught that kick…
I think that if Jones can weather some takedowns and gnp until the middle of the second round, he should be able to get a decision. Even in his wins Hamill’s cardio has always been suspect. He drops his hands like crazy after the first round, and would be wide open to a speedy striker like Jones. The longer this fight goes the better it is for Jones IMO as long as he can keep it standing (which Matt has seemed to prefer in recent fights). Should be a good one though either way.
Despite what Jones is trying to imply I think he knows he would be at a disadvantage in the clinch or on the ground and we’ll see him utilizing a lot of cautious punch kick combos. This is a tough one for me to call as I love both fighters and can see it going either way. One thing is for certain in my mind, its an awesome match up and going to be a great fight.
I think Hammil will win by dec. but I’ll be rooting for Jones. He’s a real up and comer and I’ll be very surpriseed if we don’t see him in title contention in the future. He’s got an exciting style and seems to be really well rounded that seems to be progressing.
This should be a good fight. I’m pulling for Bones, not really a Hamill fan at all.
I think after KO victory Hamill thinks he can strike and try to prove it and it’s going to be his bigger mistakes (I would call it Koscheck/Gurgel syndrome).
My prediction Jones will win by KO/TKO
Hamill is a BIG 205er. I don’t think he’ll get thrown around by Jones but I agree. Hamill’s striking is holding people on the back of their head and trying to uppercut them…
I think he’ll get to confident with his striking and get caught. Bones by TKO 2nd.
I think the most important thing for Jon Jones in this fight is to fight SMARTER, as well as harder, than Hamill.
Grappling with Hamill is a huge mistake, so if Jones can “stick and move”, he may frustrate Hamill into a bad position, partcularly in the 3rd round, and then he can make his move to end the fight.
Unfortunately for Jones Hamill is as tough as a Spartan and is improving as quickly as he is, and I don’t see this thing going his way this time, but the wheel keeps on turning when you have talent like Jon Jones…
I like this dudes attitude. He’s a good fighter with some great potential and i’m looking forward to seeing jones in there with a guy like hamill who imho is a step up in competition. Jones has been hyped up by a lot of people and for good reason. But it’s time to start proving yourself against different “tougher” fighters.
Hamill’s hands aren’t the fastest but he proved you don’t have to be faster than your opponent to get the better of the kick/boxing in his fight against bisping and that other dude he kod with a leg kick but i can’t remember his name. So hamill’s decent all around.
Jones on the other hand has displayed some versitile striking and all around skills AND is training with greg “yoda of mma” jackson so i’m expecting his overall game to greatly improve. But i guess we’ll see. Should be a great match for both guys!
jones is gonna be to fast and to technical for hamill….jones by tko or UD…….ala rich franklin/hamill and vera/kryzstoff
Gun,
Good call my thoughts exactly.
Honestly why isn’t Jon Jone fighting top ten lhw fighters
This is probably the highest level, and most appropraite level fight that Jones can sign for, when you consider just how very saturated with talent the UFC 205 division really is…
come on guys don’t you know that hamill looks tired in the 2nd or 3rd round. i’d imagine jon jones has more cardio than hamill and can outlast hamill if jones makes hamill keep working.
dont you see hamill gasp for breath after each round and eventually fights slower with his hands down. i really dont see how jon jones is going to lose unless and out of no where kick to the head.
