Since Johny Hendricks’ controversial loss to Georges St-Pierre the powerful fighter has repeatedly said he wants another crack at the legendary fighter. But now, as the former champ’s hiatus continues, “Bigg Rigg” isn’t sure if he wants to see GSP return.
Hendricks recently appeared on “Submission Radio“, and not surprisingly, he was asked about St-Pierre. Not long after the two battled in November, 2013, GSP announced he was taking a break from the sport, and he has yet to definitely say he’s going to fight again.
Here is some of what Hendricks had to say (quote via Bloody Elbow.com):
“There’s a part of me that sits there and says ‘Yes, I’d love to have him back, because I would like to fight him again’, but then there’s also a part of me where you’re never going to be able to take away what he did. Does that make sense? He did a lot of stuff for the sport and a lot of stuff for the welterweight division. So there’s a part of me that says ‘hey, stay in retirement and let us decide to see who the next sort of GSP will be’. That’s where my head’s at.”
Really, Hendricks’ feelings on this mirror a lot of other peoples. Thousands of fans want to see GSP fight again, and of course, rematch “Bigg Rigg.” But, as Hendricks alluded to, why should he? St-Pierre went out on top, has nothing to prove and made a boat load of cash.
Hendricks, meanwhile, is coming off a decision win over Matt Brown last month. The former champ is the front runner to face the winner of Robbie Lawler-Rory MacDonald II, which will take place on July 11th.
