Bobby Lashley vs. Ron Waterman Possible for November 7 Strikeforce Card
Professional wrestler Bobby Lashley is likely to return to MMA action in Strikeforce later this year, as the heavyweight prospect and promotion are close to finalizing a multi-fight deal, according to Five Knuckles.
If signed, Lashley is expected to debut against Ron Waterman, possibly on Strikeforce’s November 7 CBS-televised card or a planned December event.
Lashley (4-0), a former WWE wrestler who now wrestles for TNA, made his MMA debut in late-2008 with a first-round TKO of Joshua Franklin and has pushed his record to 4-0 in 2009 with wins over Jason Guida, Mike Cook, and Bob Sapp.
Waterman (16-6-2), who holds notable wins over Ricco Rodriguez and Kevin Randleman, is 3-1 in his last 4 fights.
Stay tuned to MMAFrenzy.com for the latest Bobby Lashley news.

good signing
I think this signing sends a real message to the MMA world that Strikeforce and its allies are damned serious about grabbing their share of the spotlight, and not leaving it all for the UFC…
yeah great move by strikeforce. it’s good to see strikeforce grow and sign some prospects and/or decent talent. I think it’s good for mma and for the fighters to have options and other organizations to look to so everything isn’t controlled by the vince mcmahon of mma.
It seems MMA fighters get paid peanuts for their actual fights. A lot of businesses are built on the little people that hold them up. How about a one fight contract for someone of Fedor Emelianako’s stature. Whatever purse they give, will be made back by PPV buys and a sold out arena.
This is turnig into one of the better “Free Televised” cards in quite sometime. I love it. Good job Strikeforce. Give me free Strikeforce, then give me free UFC the next week, and then I will gladly go check out Brock smash Shane Carwin on the 21st. Its gonna be a GREAT month for MMA fans!!
it is going to be an excellent month for mma fans! But watch it dude, there are a lot of “carwinators” roaming these parts
I wouldn’t call myself a “Carwinator” (nice, btw) but I definitely think he is only a clean shot at dethroning the 280 lbs specimen and at anytime in the 25 minute bout.
On topic, I hope this bout makes it to the Nov. 7th card.
if Lashely wins this fight he should consider moving up in competition because you can’t fight the minor leaugue guys forever right?
I agree MK$, lashley should try to test himself soon to see where his skillset is at and to see what he needs to grow on before he jumps ship over to the “land of the giants”, ufc hw div.
While Guida, Sapp, and Waterman are hardly top 10 HW contenders, they’re barely minor leaguers.
Minor league boys; I would hardly call Waterman “minor league”. Have you seen his fight record..Lashley is out of Waterman’s League….
Do some research…Chief!

Better stick with the mediocres… Lashley
I used to follow WWE hardcore years back when both Brock and Bobby were in it. And rumors were they used to have wrestling matches backstage for fun between the two. Brock would win only 50% of the time. So im very interested to see Lashley (former Army Ranger as well) build his way up through Strikeforce and possibly make it to the UFC in the future.
And to the previous entry…yes its time he moves up in competition. Overeem, Rogers, Fabricio, and Fedor will all be great matches for him.
Thats interesting, because Brock left the WWE before Lashley joined. But i guess they all have to go threw that “training” and “rehearsing” part before they are let on tv.(guess the UFC should have done this with brock to) So they could have met then.
Wher’ed you here that bro?
Carls, you beat me to it. Lesnar left WWF mid 2004, Lashley joined WWE under a developmental contract in Nov. 2004.
Rumors back in the day when I followed WWF were that Angle and Lesnar had shoot-style wrestling matches in the back as part of their prep for their many matches during their feud. Angle did quite well for himslef, so well in fact that Brock found himself on his back on more than a few occasions. I guess size really doesn’t matter when your opponent is an Olympic gold medalist.
I actually read the Angle/Lesnar thing a while back at a fans site for the now-defunct [I believe] RAW, or Real American Wrestling outfit
It also bears mentioning that Angle is a bit older and smaller than Lesnar, which makes his reported backstage owning of the Vanilla Goriila all the more impressive…
I’m thinking that if Lashley fights 3 times [and wins at least twice] in the next 12 months, against Waterman, Werdum, and either Overeem or Fedor, we could see him in the UFC for the year ending show in 2010…
We here at MMAFrenzy don’t allow commentators to make unsubstantiated claims about fighters, particularly when it comes to accusing them of steroid abuse, and even more so the way it was done in this comment. Keep that in mind the next time you post. -Justin
If he beats Fedor, the UFC will pull sunshine out of a paper sack to get him signed to the UFC.
Even if Lashley were to defeat both Waterman and Werdum, with Werdum certainly not being a “gimme”, he’d be hard pressed to beat Fedor, unless Fedor has completely abandoned MMA for SAMBO and his other non-competing Russian sports duties.
Lashley certainly has the size, strength, and speed to make things tough on Fedor in the cage, if they should ever meet, but a lot depends on how much time he spends with ATT working on the other aspects of MMA, such as submissions, cage control, and developing some sort of striking style [kickboxing, Thai boxing, karate, whatever] to go along with his top shelf wrestling ability.
Its also important that Lashley take things one step at a time.
Remember when Lesnar tried to run before he could walk, and Frank Mir hooked him in under 2 minutes and made him tap?
Same thing could happen to Lashley, ESPECIALLY against someone like Fedor, if he doesn’t have a full MMA skillset before stepping in against top competition.
Finally, Lashley does seem to fill the bill for what Dana White is looking for in the UFC HW division, so I’d expect some sort of move on him next year, when he’s had a chance to prove himself against some better competiton than Bob Sapp…
Typo btw, first sentence 3rd paragraph:
wrestler who now wrestler (should be wrestles) for TNA,
Fixed, thanks.
i think in a while, with some good training lashley could take lesnar
If lesnar keeps working his ground game and kickboxing skills, then and manages to get past carwin, then god help the hw’s in that division because he will be the best hw champ ever.
Lashley has great potential and i’m glad to see him in strikeforce where he will inevitably face top competition. If he continues to stay healthy and can get a few back to back fights in, while working on his overall game, then i see him in the ufc as a real threat to brock.
Lashley’s stand up isn’t great though and his ground game looked like it needed a lot of work in the guida fight. So he’s in danger when fighting werdum, or rogers and fedor with great stand up and ground games.
I too used to be a big wrestling mark, and I think that statement is untrue. Lesnar and lashley were in wwe for like 6 months, but unless they were tight lipped about it for years, lesnar and lashley never had any off camera shoot matches. If they did, lesnar would have brought it up on the Bubbathelovesponge show when talking about angle. He said the only people he shot with were undertaker, big show and Shelton Benjamin. However, what do I know, I stopped watching after Chris benoit “benoited” his family. But, lashley is a stud and this card is gonna be awesome! You gotta respect the guy, he said last year he wanted to fight 6 times a year, so 5 out of 6 aint bad. First h20, then maybe werdum or Brett Rogers. Scott coker is doing all the right things for this card. Just hopefully the injury/ pot marijuana curse doesn’t strike this card too.
Also, I know ill get hated on, but strikeforce should really bring in Josh Barnett, because he IS the #2 or 3 hvw in the world, depending on how you rank Brock. He’s not any more of a risk than Nick diaz. Ah guys? Ah?
I would love to see Josh Barnett in Strikeforce, but I’m thinking that Scott Coker has got to be wary of Barnett’s previous PED testing issues.
Also, Barnett hasn’t looked as sharp or as focused on the sport as a man who is the #2 or #3 MMA HW in the world should be, so Coker would be well within his rights to schedule a sit-down with Barnett and try to climb into his head a little bit and find out whats the what with this guy.
A friend of mine is a real frequent visitor to Barnett’s website, routinely gets his Twitter-ings, Facebook updates, follows his pro wrestling and Pancrase career, and so on, and from what he’s reading and hearing Barnett doesn’t seem like a man who is on the hunt for MMA HW championship gold, whether it be in the UFC, Strikeforce, or any of its allies [DREAM, M-1 Global, etc], which I find both disturbing and saddening.
Lot of questions need to be asked of and answered by Josh Barnett before a major promotion signs him to a deal IMO, but I still think he’s a major force at HW and a respected MMA fighter with box office value for someone…
Barnett v Antonio Silva WVR’s NYE show is the rumor
Rumor is also out there that Silva could face Werdum Nov. 7.
That also is true
Lashley has a lot of power. I’ve seen him choke/submit people in videos with holds that should not have been able to do that… he just crunches down and it’s lights out. I think he has the power to get his hands where he needs them early in a match and the followup str to finish even with imperfect holds.
This makes him very dangerous in my opinion to the current superstars as one mistake and he could finish anyone.
Has anyone see Overeem’s K1 fight – He looks huge(!) now sporting Lashley like muscles. I could not believe it. I’d love to see him face Dos Santos!
I would love to see Overeem turn Brock into a glassjaw4lyfe. End his career.
