Al Iaquinta has moved into the #15 spot in the UFC’s lightweight rankings, and if you ask Chris Weidman, his teammate has the abilities to go much, much higher.
On Saturday, Iaquinta will take on fellow contender Jorge Masvidal, and recently MMA Junkie.com followed the Serra-Longo fighter as he prepares for the bout. The outlet also spoke with the middleweight champ Weidman, and here is some of what he had to say about Iaquinta.
“Al is a guy I looked up to since I got into this sport,” Weidman said. “He was in it a little bit before me actually, even though he’s younger. The way he mixes up his wrestling, jiu-jitsu and his striking and puts it all together is something I look up to. I’m still watching and learning from him. He has a big future ahead of him. He’s champ material, and I knew it since Day 1.”
There’s no question that the 27 year-old has impressed in his recent outings, as Iaquinta has won three straight fights and has scored finishes in all of them. To date, Iaquainta has gone 6-2 in official UFC action.
UFC FN 63 will go down in Fairfax, Virgnia, and will be headlined by a featherweight fight between contenders Chad Mendes and Ricardo Lamas.
