Robbie Lawler Says Conor McGregor’s Fans Should Show Jose Aldo “a Little Respect”

Jose Aldo has encountered plenty of supporters during the UFC 189 World Championship Tour, particularly in Rio de Janeiro, but the featherweight champ has also faced boos and jeers from fans. Of course, part of the reason for this is because he’s been touring with the popular Conor McGregor, who hasn’t exactly gone out of his way to praise his upcoming opponent. So, supporters for “Notorious”, are likely the ones who’ve been slamming Aldo.

Now, whether you’re going to be cheering for McGregor or not, come July 11th, no one can deny that Aldo has put together a Hall of Fame type resume so far. After all, we are talking about the only featherweight champ the UFC has ever known, and a guy that has held ZUFFA’s 145 pound title since November, 2009. That’s over five years….

Well, recently Robbie Lawler was asked by MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani if some fans should show Aldo more respect, and the welterweight champ said this (quote via Bloody Elbow.com):

“Of course. I mean, this guy has one loss and this guy has fought the best of the best over and over and over again and the fans aren’t showing him any respect. This guy has put a lot of hard effort and his heart into this, and people don’t realize that he’s been doing this his whole life and he’s left a lot of years and miles in there. And he just gets after it every day. He’s a quiet guy and he just goes out there and fights, and he wins. And I just think that they should show him a little respect.”

Now sure, some of Aldo’s detractors are likely just getting caught up in McGregor’s antics, and they probably understand that the champ is ridiculously good. But, at the end of the day, no one can make a real case that Aldo doesn’t deserve respect, and a lot of it. Case in point, the guy’s been so good, what if he beats McGregor at UFC 189? Then what? He will have already defeated the division’s top five ranked contenders.

UFC 189 will be hosted by the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the co-healdiner, the aforementioned Lawler will take on Rory MacDonald.
