Fabricio WerdumStrikeforce announced on Saturday that it will hold a Showtime-televised “Challengers” event on November 20 at the Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas in conjunction with the Combat Sports Championships and X-Fights promotions.

Though no bouts have yet been confirmed for the card, a previously-reported women’s matchup between Kim Couture and Kerry Vera is expected to be featured and undefeated heavyweight Roger Gracie is also expected to make his Strikeforce debut on the card.

In other Strikeforce news, heavyweight contender Fabricio Werdum has been added to the lineup for the promotion’s November 7 CBS-televised event headlined by Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers, but his opponent has not yet been announced.

I’m still trying to figure out why he was discharged so quickly after just one loss from the ufc…can’t get my head around it…he was #2 @ that time …

    • Justin says:

      1. He had just negotiated for a much larger contract. 2. He hadn’t shown to be very exciting from what I remember. So, I think the UFC decided he wanted to get paid more than his was worth.

I’m assuming you mean (at the time) #2 in the UFC….
Werdum didn’t train for dos Santos and took him very lightly and got KTFO, this after demanding a huge extension + plus a crazy raise… Him getting cut probably was the best thing for Werdum, he looked great in San Jose the last time he fight, I believe getting cut put the drive back into Werdum

Maybe Strikeforce co-promotes with the company Lashley is currently signed with (can’t think of it off the top of my head) and have a super Nov. 7 card which the UFC will be unable to counter-promote.

    • jcohl says:

I think Lashley was fighting for the Canadian MMA outfit MFC, or Maximum Fighting Championship, although maybe Strikeforce is buying out that contract, which strikes me as cheaper than co-promoting.

      • Justin says:

Lashley signed with MFC and fought for them back in May, not sure how many fights were on that contract. He then signed with Prize Fighting Championships and fought for them in July, that contract has three fights, and one is supposed to be scheduled for November. I wrote an article about Strikeforce looking to pick up Lashley last week.

i hope they will put roger Gracie against werdum that would be a interesting fight

I always wondered why Strikeforce or the UFC didn’t jump on R.Gracie or Alexandre Ribeiro sooner. I would love to see Ribeiro at light-heavy in the UFC & R. Gracie at heavyweight in the UFC. I don’t think Lashley or Werdum (as good as he is) would have a chance against R. Gracie..IMO

    • jcohl says:

I would say that Roger Gracie’s immediate future depends wholly on how quickly he can integrate the other aspects of MMA into his world-class grappling skillset, which is probably what Strikeforce and/or the UFC is waiting to determine as his career moves forward.
Also, I’m not sure how good the Gracie family-Dana White relationship currently is, so, y’know, you might have a wait before seeing Roger in the Octagon.
Seeing him in my newly-beloved white cage, however, against someone like Bobby Lashley, would be of huge interest to the MMA community, and probably do a fair amount of business for the Strikeforce Alliance.

Although to be completely objective, shooting and hooking a fighter well past his fighting prime in Ron Waterman and a journeyman MMA fighter like Yuki Kondo doesn’t exactly make Gracie ready for Fabricio Werdum, despite his brief and unimpressive UFC appearance.
Lets give Roger a chance to develop and fully transition from submission grappling to MMA before we sign him to fight a Chute Boxe guy who has been in with names like Overeem, BigNog, Gonzaga twice [I think], Vera, Dos Santos, and Andrei Arlovski…

    • Justin says:

I think part of the problem is that Gracie hasn’t exactly shown a commitment to MMA.

In the case of both Gracie and Ribeiro, they’ve only had two MMA fights, and they may need to do more to prove their MMA value. Bibeiro also is under contract with WVR I believe.

      • jcohl says:

Maybe Roger Gracie is slow to embrace MMA because he’s doing so well with his BJJ school in London?
Lord knows I could easily believe that, seeing as how almost all of the UK fighters I’ve seen are well-schooled on their feet and at the pre-school level on the mat…
        ;)

regardless of the situation i’m probably going to have it on when it plays.
