Report: Ryo Chonan Coming To The UFC in October

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Aug 29, 2007 at 9:31 am ET15 Comments

Mixed martial artist Ryo Chonan, who has fought nearly exclusively for PRIDE and DEEP, will reportedly be coming to the UFC in October according to MMA Insight.

Chonan holds a 14-7 MMA record and fights in the middleweight division. He holds wins over UFC veteran Roan Carneiro and current UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva. Other notable wins include Joey Villasenor and Carlos Newton. Chonan has not shied away from tough competition losing to Phil Baroni, Paulo Filho, and current PRIDE welterweight and middleweight champion Dan Henderson.

Chonan could be just the guy the UFC needs to add some additional competitive depth to the middleweight division. With a string of wins in the UFC combined with his 2 straight wins in the DEEP organization Chonan could be poised to take on current champion Anderson Silva in late 2008. The match would serve as a chance for Silva to defend his loss to Chonan from 2004 and the UFC would be able to market the title match.

Although the report suggests Chonan is coming to the UFC in October the rumored UFC 77 fight card is full and something is going to need to change to fit Chonan into the lineup if he is to make his debut at the Cincinnati event.

This is great news.  Ryo might be the next guy in line for a title sot against Silva, if Franklin is unsuccessful this October.  I think Franklin will win, but if he doesn't; the UFC could say that Ryo beat Silva and Silva wants revenge and build from that angle to promote that PPV.

  • Red says:

I wonder who Ryo might fight in his debut match?  It would be sweet to have him fight Marquardt or even a guy like Cote.

  • SCOTCHYDOW says:

It seems I am not the only one giving Franklin 0% chance of beating Silva. Chonan will be an excellent addition to a shallow division. Hopefully they are shopping for some more world class tallent. As much as I dislike him, it would be interesting to see Frank Shamrock back in the UFC. He is much more talented, but equally as loud mouthed (probablly more brash) than his brother, but talented.

  • Kris says:

I think Cote would be a good opponent but they could also send him to the WEC for a fall fight and (eventually) he could try to avenge his loss to Filho for the WEC Title.

  • Red says:

That is a great idea Kris of sending Ryo to WEC to contend for the WEC title.  Whichever organization he fights in more often doesn't matter to me as long as he puts on a good performance.

  • Red says:

SCOTCHYDOW it doesn't make sense to me how no one is really giving Franklin a chance of regaining his title either.  I am glad you think he has some sort of chance.  I think Franklin has more than a chance of winning than others think.  I will go as far to say he will win his belt back.  He made a mistake and lost; it happens.  This time around expect a stronger and more well educated Franklin and this spells disaster for Silva.

  • Red says:

Frank Shammrock is a good fighter.  I wouldn't mind seeing him back in the UFC either.  Did anyone see what he did to Baroni?  Frank destroyed Baroni; that fight wasn't even close.  Frank Shammrock, if he comes to the UFC can be a contender.

  • RT says:

Chonan, Misaki and Gono are all gonna drop to 17o according to bloodyelbow.com

  • RT says:

"RED" I don't see franklin doing any better this time around he will get caught trying to shoot in for a takedown. He's not gonna strike with him, he's not gonna clinch with him, he'll try and take him down and in the process get k.t.f.o. I just cant see anywhere franklin can win this fight.

  • SCOTCHYDOW says:

Well Red, I really don't give him (Franklin) much of a chance. I thought he was unstoppable before the Silva fight, but now Ijust don't know. I think he's really lucky Ushin Okami didn't start fighting back til the third round or he might have had another lose. I sure hope he has been trainning differently than he did in their first fight , and I hope he realizes he can't beat Silva in the CLINCH.

  • Red says:

Hey Mike.  Ryo didn't k.o. Silva.  Ryo submitted Silva with one of the craziest submission moves I have ever seen; it might have just been the craziest submission move I have ever seen in my life.  It was some kind of heel hook.   Try to see that fight; the ending is as Joe Rogan would say, "Unbebbblievaaabbllle!"

  • mike says:

opps sorry thought he koed him   i have too check out that fight on utube

  • Red says:

Hey SCOTCHYDOW; I think Franklin will fight a smarter and more competitive fight.  He will use his size and strength to his advantage this time around.  Franklin will not under estimate Silva's power, as well.  I think if Franklin can take it to the ground; he can ground and pound Silva to victory.  Also with each minute and round that passes; Franklin's confidence will increase.

  • Red says:

Hey Mike; yeah man you definately gotta watch that Chonan vs. Silva fight on Youtube.  You will enjoy it.
