UFC FN 62: Josh Koscheck’s Not Sure What’s Next Following Latest Defeat

Josh Koscheck

A lot of folks believed Josh Koscheck would announce his retirement if he was defeated by Erick Silva at UFC Fight Night 62, but after that happened, the long time contender stopped short of hanging up the gloves.

Koscheck was forced to tap out to a nicely executed, guillotine choke in last night’s co-headliner, and as a result, the accomplished wrestler was handed his fifth straight loss. Considering Koscheck is 37 years-old, and has completed the last fight on his UFC deal, many observers believe this could be it for the TUF 1 vet.

Well, following the event, Koscheck didn’t commit to fighting again, but he didn’t formally announce his retirement either. When asked about what he plans to do next, here is some of what the former welterweight contender said at the post-fight press conference (quotes via MMA Fighting.com):

“I’ve got a good long career since The Ultimate Fighter 1 and it’s been a fun ride,” Koscheck noted. “This sport is changing and these guys are getting better. These young guys are just getting tougher. I feel like my skills are there, I just need to put it together.”

“I can’t make that decision right now,” said Koscheck, when asked again if he’s retiring. “I’ll go home and talk to the old lady and we’ll see what happens.”

White was also asked about Koscheck’s future at the press conference, and the UFC President said he’d talk to the fighter in a couple of days. According to the aforementioned report from MMA Fighting.com, however, White told FOX Sports 1 that Koscheck “doesn’t want to retire”, and that he’s “gonna try to push him in that direction.”

So, it will be interesting to see what Koscheck elects to do, as it doesn’t sound like another UFC contract will be tabled. Due to what Koscheck’s accomplished during his career, other organizations like Bellator will probably be interested in acquiring his services.

It could depend on whether Koscheck wants to close out his career outside the UFC. The fighter also noted that he’s extremely busy running his businesses etc, so don’t be surprised if Koscheck closes the book on his memorable career.
