Unlike nearly everyone else under the MMA sun, Conor McGregor apparently doesn’t have much respect for the abilities of Jose Aldo, and “Notorious” continues to pick away at the featherweight champ’s record.
On Friday, Aldo and McGregor attended a “World Tour” event in Rio de Janeiro, to promote their July 11th fight at UFC 189. McGregor has never had many positive things to say about Aldo, and on Friday, the champ’s finishing abilities were the main target.
According to a follow up report from UFC.com, here is some of what McGregor had to say about Aldo, and his Octagon record:
“The guy has one finish in UFC history!” said McGregor. “One legit finish. That’s it. I have four. Facts are facts. When I hit, they fall. When he hits, they survive. That’s it.
“He has 25 minutes to hide that battle-worn chin from me. It won’t happen. In 25 minutes, I will hit him and he will fall!”
How about that huh? It’s not often you hear someone questioning whether Aldo is a dangerous fighter…
If you look at Aldo’s record, yes, he has just two stoppages in seven bouts, and one of them materialized after Chan Sung Jung injured his shoulder. The other was the unforgettable, KO win Aldo scored over Chad Mendes in 2012.
If you examine Aldo’s WEC record, however, the Brazilian star went 8-0 with the now defunct promotion, and he recorded stoppages in seven of those fights…Aldo boosters would also likely point out that he’s been facing the best of the best at 145, during his lengthy run as UFC champ.
Now does McGregor really believe all this? Hard to say. But it’s definitely a good way to hype up the fight.
UFC 189 will go down at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on July 11th.
