Roy Nelson Defeats Kimbo Slice on Episode 3 of The Ultimate Fighter 10

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Sep 30, 2009 at 11:12 pm ET66 Comments

The Ultimate Fighter 10 CastWith his matchup against Roy Nelson decided at the end of last week’s episode, episode three opens with Kimbo reflecting on fighting. While Kimbo runs to get in shape for the bout, Nelson is at the gym training and coach Rashad Evans discusses his last of trust in others.

Evan’s teammate, Keith Jardine, shows up at the gym to help the fighters train, but the attention quickly turns to the intensifying feud between Evans and rival coach Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. While “Rampage” feels Jardine is a nice guy, Evans is convinced that Jardine hurt Rampage’s jaw in their March fight, which prompted Evans to fight Machida. James McSweeny, Evan’s top pick, defends his coach and the argument intensifies, but Evans steps in to separate the pair and cooler heads prevail.

The attention shifts back to Kimbo, with “Rampage” discussing the history of his beard and how he’s a likable guy. Kimbo trains on the ground and is able to escape from his heavyweight teammates, but Rampage is concerned that they have no way to simulate Nelson’s “big belly”.

Back at the house, Nelson’s fellow team members are confident he has the skills to beat Kimbo, saying that even if Kimbo starts to connect on the feet Roy should be able to take him down at will and control him on the ground.

Back at the gym, Kimbo and the rest of Team Rampage do conditioning drills but Marcus Jones has to stop midway through the session due to a knee injury. Jones maintains that he wants to fight next, but “Rampage” wants to give him time to allow his knee to recover.

At the house, Jones talks about his passions: comic books and gardening. Despite being one of the self-described most-boring people in the house, he and Kimbo have grown close with the pair joking that they’d be well-rounded if they could combine Kimbo’s striking with Jones’ ground game.

Kimbo and Nelson next weigh-in for their fight, with Kimbo weighing in at 230, while Nelson tips the scale at 264. Dana White says the fight could go either way, with Nelson being the more well-rounded fighter while Kimbo has the power to knock Nelson out with one punch.

At another Team Rampage training session, Kimbo spars with his partners and his teammates are all complimentary of his skills, while Nelson trains one final time with Team Rashad.

It’s fight day and Kimbo and Nelson get prepared and warm up for their fights backstage before making their way to the Octagon.

Nelson reiterates his plan to take it to the ground if he starts eating shots, while Kimbo says he’ll stick stick to his strengths.

There’s no touch of the gloves to start this fight as Nelson throws weak punches and close the distance, while Kimbo keeps his feet moving and chooses his strikes carefully before connecting with a hard leg kick. Slice moves forward and has Nelson backpedaling with his jab. Kimbo connects against the fence, but Nelson avoids major damage before looking for the takedown. Kimbo stays on his feet as Nelson presses him against the fence in the clinch. Nelson keeps up the pressure and finally scores the takedown and is immediately into mount. Kimbo does a good job neutralizing from the bottom, but Nelson passes to side control, where he pins Kimbo under his gut and tees off with short punches to the head. Slice is unable to escape, but despite warnings from the referee makes it to the end of the round. MMAFrenzy.com scores the round for Nelson 10-9.

Between rounds, “Rampage” warns Kimbo that Nelson won’t want to stand with him and that he’ll need to adjust to his takedowns.

Round 2 opens with tentative punching from both fighters. Kimbo connects with some big punches and Nelson immediately scores another takedown into side control. There’s little action on the ground as Nelson lays on top of Slice, but Nelson eventually manages to create an opening and throws weak punches to the head on Kimbo. Though the punches are far from impressive, with Slice unable to escape, the referee is forced to stop the bout.

The fight’s official result was:

  • Roy Nelson def. Kimbo Slice via TKO (strikes) — Round 2, 2:01

“Rampage” says Nelson is like having the moon on top of you and asks “How do you get the moon off you?”.

Dana White criticizes Nelson’s performance, comparing his punching power to that of his daughter, while praising Kimbo for stepping up early in the tournament and suggesting he train hard during the rest of his time in the house, because there could be an opportunity for him to re-join the competition.

It appears that it may not take long for Slice to fight again, as a preview of next week’s episode shows Marcus Jones collapsing at the house and teases Kimbo as a possible replacement.

Kimbo looked like he had some punching power left in his 35year old body but still showed why he needs to improve as a complete fighter. He was not taken down so easy but once down his gaurd was passed quick. I belive Kimbo is past his prim and can improve but not to the level that is required to become a lagit contennder at the top of the UFC’s heavyweight devision. Also this fight was nothing it was hyped up to be. Fat boy did not look that good, the fight was better than last week but not impressed.

  • Manny says:

roy nelson sucks i think once a ground fighter fights him he will be out he has no place in the ufc heavy weight. as for kimbo i think hes a great fight but needs to learn more on his ground game once he does look out heavy weights cuz the guy knocc out power i seen roy looking like rashade in the loyota fight!!!!!!!!!!

  • Manny says:

frank mir will kill roy nelson!

  • COVETOUS says:

I think Kimbo did just fine and look forward to seeing him fight in the future. A match up with Houston Alexander would be a fun watch now that hes back in the UFC. Kimbo hit Nelson with better shots and fought at a descent pace. I think Frank Mir would agree that when you have a 265+ pound guy laying on top of you there isn’t much you can do. The difference being Lesnar’s punches do damage, my step son throws the same punches as Nelson…the problem being hes four.

  • Manny says:

i agree with covetous if kimbo fights houston he has to drop down to 205 where i think he belongs but put him against keith jardine or i know it sounds crazy but forest griffin

  • Manny says:

kimbo needs to train with big nog!

Stick with one name, or you will not be allowed to post in the future. -Justin

  • love4thedead says:

I don’t know I enjoyed the fight even though I was pulling for Slice. You can’t win them all and the besides the IFL may not have been the best org inthe world, it still takes skill to be the champ.

  • Manny says:

ok i have one roy nelson vs randy couture lets see mr fat boy pull that one off!

  • Manny says:

i did stick with 1 name that was a friends comment but ok

  • Eye-Rhyme says:

Here in Los Angeles the show doesn’t come on until another 30 minutes.
I couldn’t resist reading, sucks that Kimbo had to lose. I probably won’t be watching now, was Roy’s performance really as bad as people are making it seem???

  • Lex415 says:

I think thats why people are saying this fight was weak, Nelso only did enough. He and everyone else knew Slice’s ground game sucked nards so the minute he had an oppurtunity to put hinm on the ground, he went with it. Smart move for Nelson IMO.

  • M3 says:

Man going to give kimbo another fight man this show is all about kimbo no matter what! there selling out, ufc used to be about the best fighter winning and thats that! now they are no better than elite xc.
im pissed off it’s about ratings no matter the cause. which sucks people tune in for this guy only! but whatever

    • windmiller says:

i think the UFC is about having the fights FANS want to see, thats what makes them money……. to put on more fights, to pay there fighters more, and to make a provit!!!! are you one of the guys that always complains that the fighters need to get paid more!!!!!!

  • Manny says:

love4thedead no nelson didnt bully me i just dont want to see an over weight sorry fighter in the ufc and what are you his lawyer!

  • Will says:

Nelson did enough to win cause he’ll be fighting again in a few weeks, why take yourself out with fatigue in the 1st round of eliminations? Kimbo showed he has a super weak takedown defense and any current UFC HW would take advantage of that and beat him. Dana spouting off about Nelson’s winning fashion and the video clips of a potential Kimbo returning, looks bad. Dana is the sh!t, but come on man.

  • Nico says:

I dont think Kimbo has a weak takedown defense I think kimbo has a weak ground game. Nelson did not take him down with ease he tryed a few times and Kimbo did not go down. Nelson only took him down once and the second time Kimbo tryed a knee and fell backwards.

  • Troyjaboy says:

This fight didn’t do Roy any justice, he is usually much better than he was against Kimbo. I think he was just nervous because after bragging so much about how much more experienced he was than everyone else in the house he didn’t want to lose to the guy everyone is underestimating/gunning for.

  • c4rm0 says:

WTF is going on with the UFC and Dana its becoming more and more like Elite XC. Kimbo sucks as a Mixed Martials Arts fighter he should of not been given all this hype TUF10 has basically been all about him. Yes he is a nice guy and Yes he is a big draw for some reason and can earn the UFC alot of money + Fans but come on the Guy sucks !!!!!!!!!! and wouldnt beat any current UFC Heavyweight

  • love4thedead says:

I think by using Kimbo as promotional tool they can garner more viewers for the show, thus increasing more exposure for those other fighters on show. So casual fans will know who they are.

  • Sammy says:

Can we all agree on this…..NO ONE on this show would give Lesnar..even Carwin a legit challenge in the heavyweight division…..

  • bottumzup says:

That was a brutal 2nd round KO alright….LOL-when they showed Roy & the boys at the table talking a/b putting Kimbo in the crucifix & teeing off on him I knew where the fight was going. Then it’s kinda ironic that Page’s main concern/training was Kimbo being on his back. I must say that Kimbo worked a good wizzar in the 1st round but once I saw Roy trying to get that arm like a cheesburger then I knew it was gonna end by kimara or crucifix. He got one good buck off the cage but he was done after that. Kimbo was better off turning in & giving him his back & trying to defend the choke. 260 lbs was too much for Slice. Slice did not have that killer instinct look in his eye like he used to. He looked liked this was the 1st time he ever got in the cage. Dean should’ve stopped it in the 1st…

  • steve says:

when this show started i wasnt a kimbo fan and knew he would end up getting beat on the ground and knew he did have a chance to win this show. But he has proven to me atleast to have tremendous potential as long as he gets with the right camp and improve his ground game. Big country did want he needed to win, but cmon he is garbage. All he did was lay on top of him and when you have a 40 pound advantage not contest. Are some of yall actually saying you would like to see him or even will pay to see him in a ufc match. atleast kimbo will try to give you a exciting fight

  • jonbon says:

I hope roy loses in the show and Kimbo fights him again in december…Now that kimbo is training with ATT I think He will come out in december and have a good performance…people give lesnar a hard time for “sitting” on people…but atleast Lesnar can land devastating blows while he is down there!…whats roy going to do? Crucifix every match?…I’ve always liked kimbo…but the show has given me a lot more respect…such a legit guy…no smack talk…took that loss like a true fighter…I respect that!

    • Gunslinger says:

i dont care how much roy nelson weighed kimbo wasnt getting out of that crucifix the difference between lesnar and jonbon is roy nelson is a black belt and that crucifix side mount was all skill….kimbo will not replace marcus jones im willing to bet that….marcus jones wont let it happen!…the ufc just wants another big tune in

      • jcohl says:

Which is probably why they timed the announcement of his first ACTUAL UFC fight for the day after he lost to Nelson.
This way viewers will stay engaged because they know Slice’ll be fighting at the finale, or 107, depending on what you believe…

  • Jason says:

The UFC did their best with editing and comments from Dana to show the world that kimbo didn’t get beat, he was just sat on. He lost fair and square though. I guess the only one who knows how to win against a fat man laying on you with his beer gut is Arlovski.

    • Justin says:

Arlovski had the help of an unjustified stand up to get out from under the moon, though.

      • chrisl says:

Yeah never been a fan of standing guys up when they’re in a dominant position even if they aren’t doing too much and that was clearly a lapse in judgement on the referees part. I mean I consider that a type of submission by compressive asphyxia haha!

With out that stand-up AA becomes one of the first Belorussians stay on the moon.

  • t4terrific says:

Kimbo didn’t even try to excape the crucifix either time. He is so inept on his back. He basically laid there waiting for the ref to save him. Were Nelson a tougher fighter, Kimbo would have been mangled with some massive blows to the head. Instead, Nelson tapped him over and over, looking at the ref, waiting for a free win, without hurting his opponent.

Nelson’s takedowns looked terrible too. He basiclly tried to grab Kimbo and push him until he fell. I’d like to see him fight Lesnar just to see Big Country Crock get mangled.

  • MMAFan says:

This was the big fight of the season? ***YAWN***
If someone doesn’t step up and start looking impressive, Dana should make it a 10k contract instead of a 100k.
Nelson looked like he didn’t have the ground and pound to finish a lightweight, much less a heavyweight. No wonder White has resisted having a heavyweight season for so long. He was right, makes for boring TV.

And Nelson’s arrogant gloating ‘double whopper with cheese’. The guy needs a grip. He can’t possibly watch this fight the next day and be impressed with himself.

  • submit24 says:

Hater patrol is obviously 12yrs old. Kimbo is out of his league. Nelson played it safe. And I believe Nelson will be much more dominant in his next fight.

  • UFC isn't Sumo says:

That was the saddest display of a “champ” I could imagine, why in the world were they not stood up after roy the “whopper champ” showed he was to tired to do anything but suffocate his opponent. Either get him outa the cage or put him in with Lesnar, make that drivethru his last meal!

Just shows ya who showed potential when Dana White has already said Kimbo will continue fighting in the UFC after TUF 10 is over.

PS if Roy was a real fighter he’d have to be in the 205 class because true fighters know it takes a real athlete to step in the cage not some obesse wash up.

  • MMAFan says:

I’m not convinced Kimbo is out of his league… yet. I said last week that he’d either win by ko in the first two min or else Roy would get it to the mat and keep him there til he won by stoppage or points.
Kimbo is in an interesting spot. He is in his late 30’s with a huge name and following, but is still a MMA rookie. He needs to learn a lot about takedown defense and ground fighting, but that is typical for any rookie. And he seems to have the desire, ethic, and attitude to learn those parts of his game. If he does, he could potentially be dangerous.

I will note it is very unfortunate he has Rampage for a coach, because I don’t think Rampage has the ability to teach those skills very well. Kimbo would have grown a lot more as a fighter with Evans as a coach. Or after the show if he goes and trains with someone that really could teach him good ground skills (Ortiz…?)

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

to quote denny green from his arizona cards days “they r who we thought they were”. roys stratagy against arlovski was the same as last nights. he tried to smother him wit his gut but arlovski got help. kimbo is also who i thought he was and when he got mounted(which roy gave up for some reason) and crucifixed it showed he was a fish outta water who flopped for a min then just layed there. fight was def not worth the hype.

  • Vinz_Clortho says:

Roy could easily win this and despite his physique he did not employ that strategy because he was tired, he did it because he knew he could win easily.

Was it exciting.. no because the class of fighters was two breeds apart. Roy has been in three round brawls before and has proven to be able to keep it going.

Honestly Roy could easily win this competition, I personally like his independent spirit and think it is a tribute to his personal will how well he has done completely managing himself.

Seriously tho.. knocking on Roy because he didn’t look exciting against a fighter that has no round game is not his fault.

Also it seems he is opening up and taking instruction from his team now and with this win I wouldn’t be surprised if his team mates supported him into the future.

  • Kshaw17 says:

I thought this was supposed to be the best season of TUF so far. This season has sucked so far. I would not even place it in the top 5 of ultimate fighter seasons.

  • keef says:

what it comes down to is everyone needs to jump off kimbos dick and realize that roy laid on him the way he did becuase he knows kimbos powerful n how do you stop that. lay on him. he crucifixed him with ease to say the least and did it twice. roy had the perfect plan n to win and thats what he did. don’t talk **** becuase what wou;d any one else do stand and bang with backyard brawler come on now your asking to lose. and yes them punches were weak but he controlled him n kimbo could not defend at all. it should have been stopped in the first round once he got crucifixed with 29 seconds left and got punched in the head non stop and not defending that fight should have been stopped bottom line if it was any one else laying on the ground crucifixed and being punched for 29 seconds it would have been stopped.

  • RJA says:

All you people complaining about the fights this season, keep in mind that these are heavyweights.Did you really expect great fast paced battles? On the flip side i stopped taking into consideration what fighters look like on the show, because clearly it doesn’t matter.Just look at forest, kenflo, leben. That includes kimbo aswell he may be 35 but he still seems explosive and strong enough to be a potential threat with the right training.
