UFC 185: Alistair Overeem Discusses Strategy, Need to Avoid “Travis Browne Situation”

Alistair Overeem outscored Roy Nelson for the unanimous decision win at UFC 185, but the victory evidently left some fans unsatisfied with “The Reem’s” performance. Although Overeem battered Nelson repeatedly with knees and kicks, the decorated heavyweight received more than a  few boos throughout the bout.

While speaking to the media after his latest win, here is what Overeem had to say about the fight, and the boos his performance incurred (quote via MMA Junkie.com):

“It’s never nice to get booed, but I’m getting booed a little bit often lately,” Overeem said. “You know what? Sometimes you’ve just got to go through it. You’ve got to stick to the gameplan. I actually wanted to be a little bit more aggressive, but my corner was like, ‘He’s very dangerous. Stay calm. Do your gameplan.’ Because otherwise you might have like a Travis Browne situation. You’re like kicking the sh-t out of somebody, and then he comes back, and then it’s like a loss. So focus and execute the gameplan.”

“Every time I hit him, I could see in his eyes that he wanted to hit my head off. Every time I hit him, he got more angry,” Overeem said about the rugged Nelson. “Kind of like ‘The Hulk’ or something.”

Although many fans would have liked to have seen Overeem push for a finish a wee bit more, there’s no question that Nelson is ridiculously dangerous. So, considering that Overeem had gone 2-3 in his previous 5 bouts, it’s not surprising that he wasn’t willing to throw caution to the win. Overeem was coming off a KO victory over Stefan Struve heading into the bout, after he was stopped by Ben Rothwell last September.

With the win, Overeem pushed his UFC record to 4-3 and his overall record to 39-14. Nelson, meanwhile, has lost four of his last five bouts and has a record now of 20-11.

While it remains to be seen what’s next for Overeem, it looks like Dana White is interested in having him fight Junior dos Santos next. That sounds about right no?

UFC 185 went down at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
