UFC 74 Medical Suspensions
The Nevada State Athletic Commission has issued medical suspensions stemming from the action that took place at UFC 74 this weekend. The most interesting thing about the list is not who’s on the list but rather who is not. According to reports UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture suffered a fracture in his left arm while blocking a kick from Gabriel Gonzaga in the title bout. Though his name is not listed on the official suspension list he will reportedly be required to wear a splint for 6 weeks but it should not affect his fight schedule as his next title defense will not come until early 2008 (we also have a request out to his camp for comment on the injury and his absence from this list).
Here is the list of medical suspensions from UFC 74:
Gabriel Gonzaga (defeated by Randy Couture)
- Must have broken nose clearend by ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) doctor or no contest until 02/22/08.
- Minimum suspension (no contest) until 10/25/07
- No contact until 10/10/07
Alberto Crane (defeated by Roger Huerta)
- Must have right medial orbital blowout fracture cleared by an ophthalmologist or no contest until 02/22/08
- Minimum suspension (no contest) until 10/25/07
- No contact until 10/10/07
Joe Stevenson (defeated Kurt Pellegrino)
- Suspended until 09/25/07 (broken nose)
- No contact until 09/16/07
Kendall Grove (defeated by Patrick Cote)
- Suspended until 10/10/07
- No contact until 09/25/07
David Heath (Defeated by Renato Sobral)
- Suspend Heath until 10/10/07
- No contact until 09/25/07
Antoni Hardonk (defeated by Frank Mir)
- Must have an MRI of right shoulder and be cleared by a doctor to fight again or no contest until 02/22/08
- Minimum no contest until 10/10/07
- No contact until 09/25/07

I don't see anything about Randy Coutour here? I heard he fractured his arm blocking one of Gonzagas kicks. Anyone else hear anything about this?
Sorry, my computer didn't show the upper half of this page, obviously this is true.
Yeah Couture broke his Ulna near his wrist and Stevenson broke his nose, not his job as I originally reported based on other information. He said his teeth hurt but it was due to a broken nose.
I didnt see anything about Heath either? He prolly got the worst of everything that night. Im surprised he didnt bleed to death. I seen the video on UFC On Demand….and the dude lost so much blood on top of getting choked out a little bit longer than he should of. Like I said….Babalu needs to fight Chuck or rampage….and get beat down a lil more after the bell.
Heath looked absolutely terrible but he too was left off of the list. Now I don't know why that was (perhaps the cut was minor despite the blood loss) but he still should have had a minimum suspension for the choke out by Babalu.
Update – I am not sure if I overlooked it or if they updated it but I now have the information for Heath. It's in the article but he's suspended until 10/10.
I still have not heard about Couture and am surprised Stevenson received such a short suspension for a broken nose.
I hope Couture isn't out for too long; that guy is the face f the Heayweight Division right now.
Sam Caplan was reporting Stevenson broke his jaw.
From what I can gather after the fight Stevenson said (more or less) that he felt like he broke his jaw because his teeth hurt. In his most recent statements (on Sherdog) Stevenson said he broke his nose, not his jaw so I am going on the more recent information but I have an email out to Joe for comment so we'll see.
I understand about a few of them, Gonzaga did get the bridge of his nose cracked real good and Randy's injury doesn't surprise me. They didn't list the reasons for grove or heath, but Cote did knock Kendall's scrawny ass out ala hector ramirez and Heath must have suffered throat trama from the extended submission.
Either way these guys will all be back and ready to go again. What happens next is anyones guess
Any time a fighter is knocked out, he is put on medical suspension due to concusion. I really like that the UFC (or state athletic commision) does this. I know quite a few local fighters in my area and goto the fights here and a guy will get KOed, and be back in the ring getting knocked out again two weeks later. That's why boxing is so much more dangerous than MMA, multiple consecutive concusions.
I was pretty bummed by Kendal Grve lossing to Cote'. It was brewing up to be a great fight, then Cote' nailed him, and WELL. Cote should get the respect he deserves now, but I hope it doesn't do too much damage to Grove's career. Oh yeah, where in the bloody hell can I find the preliminary fights. I hear the Babalu/Heath fight is where that 10' x 10' bloodstain in the middle of the ring came from. Went to the MMAPlayground, but they had to pull the video.
Can someone explain to me, if it is really dangerous or not to fight with an injury such as a broken jaw or broken bone in your body. I'm surprised that so many fighters can fight with a broken bone or two.
Does anyone know where I can get to see the Heath vs. Babalu fight besides UFC.com? I would like to see what Babalu did to Heath.
The dangers of continuing to fight with broken bones really are that the injury can be worsened (the bone can be moved further out of alignment), further bones could be broken/shattered, and you may not be able to defend adequately (in the case of arm and leg breaks.
The can continue to fight because on Adrenaline. They may know something is broken or wrong but the adrenaline nulls the pain and allows them to continue fighting.
The best way to fine preliminary fights is UFC on Demand or torrents but the latter is illegal. UFC on Demand is 59.xx for 6 months of access and preliminary fights are on there within 48 hours of an event ending.
Yeah the Babalu-Heath video was up for a while but it's probably pulled now.
Hopefully you got to see the video when I put it on the front page because it was up for about 5 minutes and then removed from the video provider. If not again torrents of the show are available but I just have to preface that they are illegal. Otherwise UFC.com is your only option right now unless the video is posted again.
Hey Kris. Thanks was able to see the video. I appreciate you taking the trouble of doing that. Keep up the good work buddy.
Oh yeah thanks for fedding me info on fighters fighting with injuries such as broken bones. I forgot about the adrenaline that fighters have going into and during a fight. Thanks again.
