Things are going pretty, pretty well in the career of Luke Rockhold, and according to the rising middleweight, it’s because he’s the best fighter in the world…
Rockhold has long been regarded as one of the planet’s top middleweights, and more recently, he’s turned heads throughout MMA by finishing the likes of Costa Philippou, Tim Boetsch, and Michael Bisping. Up next, Rockhold will take on the renowned, Lyoto Machida, and if he can defeat the latter, the former Strikeforce champ could very well land a title shot.
Well, recently Rockhold spoke to MMA Junkie.com, and while discussing his aspirations for the future, the 30 year-old stated:
“You always think and you always dream,” Rockhold said. “I know what I want, and I believe it’s ahead of me. I believe I’m the best fighter in the world.”
Now sure, since Rockhold is currently ranked #4 in the UFC’s 185 division, a lot of folks probably don’t agree with his assessment. That said, based off the AKA fighter’s athleticism and skills, it isn’t hard to envision Rockhold becoming one of the sport’s very best. After all, this is a guy who’s only loss since 2007 came against Vitor Belfort, and Rockhold has also defeated Tim Kennedy and “Jacare” Souza during his career.
First things first, however, and that’s Machida, who remains one of the promotion’s most dangerous middleweights. While discussing how he matches up against “The Dragon”, Rockhold had this to say in the aforementioned interview:
“I think I’m better than him everywhere. It’s a different stylistic matchup. He hasn’t fought a southpaw like me that can hit hard like me, kick hard, kick with him, punch with him – I can do everything, and I believe I can do everything better.”
We”ll find out next month. If you look at the UFC’s upcoming schedule, the April 18th fight between Machida and Rockhold definitely pops out as a ‘must see’.
The bout will headline UFC on FOX 15, which will be hosted by the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
