Nova Uniao prospect, Valmir Lazaro, earned the split decision victory over James Krause in the UFC 184 prelims live on Fight Pass. Both Lazaro and Krause displayed technique striking technique as the majority of their bout took place on the feet. Stiff jabs and leg kicks from Krause racked up volume, but Lazaro seemed more comfortable throwing combinations – especially to the body.
Krause attempted several takedowns and tie-ups throughout the course the contest, looking for a way to get a little edge on the scorecards, but Lazaro showcased Nova Uniao’s patented takedown defense in staying on his feet. Lazaro’s leg kicks and Muay Thai attack left Krause’s face bruised after their 15 minute exchange, but both men definitely had their moments. In the end, Lazaro landed the more meaningful strikes throughout the 15-minute fight, despite being slightly out-pointed by Krause’s pure volume.
Lazaro definitely looks to be a prospect to keep an eye on as he gets his first UFC victory. He definitely has some very technical striking, and despite slowing down a little towards the end of the third round, he showcased great heart and will to fight as both he and Krause put on a very fast-paced contest. Great fight between two promising lightweights.
