If Brock Lesnar does decide to return to the UFC, then by the looks of it, a rubber match with Frank Mir is still in the cards.
As almost certainly know by now, Mir took out “Bigfoot” Silva last night at UFC Fight Night 61, and in doing so, extended his lengthy run as ZUFFA employee. The former heavyweight champ was coming off four, consecutive loss heading into the bout, and although all four came against notable opponents, Mir was in a must win situation.
Well, following the event, it didn’t take long before Mir was asked about the possibility of fighting Lesnar for a third time. Yes, the latter hasn’t said he plans to make another UFC run, but since Lesnar’s WWE deal is reportedly ending soon, the rumor mill regarding his MMA future as been running overtime.
Here is was what Mir had to say about facing his old rival, one more time (quotes via MMA Junkie.com):
“I think it would be a huge, big fight,” said Mir. “I think it would be something that would catapult my name even higher up. A rubber match between the two of us would be a phenomenal fight. To keep that anywhere in the works, I had to get a win tonight.”
“It’s not something like, ‘I’m going to win this to fight Brock,’” he said. “It was like, man, I need to win this to keep my job, or my wife is not going to let me go to the gym any more. It’s not going to pay the bills. I’m going to have to get a 9-to-5 (job).”
Lesnar and Mir battled for the first time, way back in 2008 at UFC 181, and the latter ended the fight with a first round, knee bar. Lesnar proceeded to defeat Heath Herring and then Randy Couture later that year to become UFC champ. Mir and Lesnar met again at UFC 100 in June, 2009, but this time, the massive wrestler scored a second round, stoppage win.
So, if Lesnar does return to the UFC, and that kind of seems like a big if, would he want to fight Mir for a third time? It’s kind of hard to say right now.
