The lightweight bout between Kenny Florian and Clay Guida that was originally scheduled for UFC 106 in November has been moved to UFC 107 on December 12 in Memphis, TN. This news comes on the heels of the announcement that the BJ Penn vs. Diego Sanchez bout was moved to this event, as well as the postponement of the scheduled Rashad Evans vs. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson bout to a later event. This story was originally reported via the MMALive Twitter page, and later confirmed by Kenny Florian on his Twitter page.

Florian was last in action at UFC 101 on August 8th where he suffered a loss to BJ Penn in his second shot at the UFC lightweight title. Prior to the bout Florian experienced a nearly nine month layoff after earning the title shot with a victory over Joe Stevenson, while he waited for Penn to face Georges St. Pierre, and recover from that fight. Florian had earned the title shot by putting together a six fight win streak following his loss to Sean Sherk in his first title fight, including victories over Roger Huerta and Joe Lauzon.

Guida will also be looking to bounce back from defeat against Florian after losing via unanimous decision to Diego Sanchez in a “fight of the year” candidate bout at The Ultimate Fighter: US vs. UK finale in June. Prior to the loss Guida had put together three straight victories over the likes of Nate Diaz and Mac Danzig. This bout will mark Guida’s fourth consecutive bout against a “The Ultimate Fighter” alum, though Florian will be the first non-winner he has faced.

This should be a decent fight. But why do I get the feeling that we’ve seen this match before? Seems clay is everyone’s “comeback” fight or “make a statement” fight. If florian wins, people will say he should have won, but if guida loses it will be an upset and guida again will get back “in the mix”. I think florian will sub guida in the 3nd round via rear naked choke.

    • dbiz says:

Perhaps because Guida is going to be a hell of a fight for anyone that faces him? I mean, no on has ever REALLY put him away (KO/TKO in my book). He’s a good wrestler so he’s pretty competent on the ground. It’s a great match up for anyone who is looking to show something, following a loss or not.

      • Jazzkok says:

i like guida and agree that no one has ever really “put him away”, well except for my boy roger huerta. But then again, who has guida really “put away”?

Not to bash the guy. Hell guida’s a breath of fresh air when watching all of these UFN’s or TUF finales. But the guy is usally booked to fight what is supposed to be a “top contender” on his way back from a loss. What does that say about guida’s role @ 155?

  • I think now hat Florian realizes that he’s good just not Champion good, i think now he might not be so cocky like he was against BJ, but then again being that he just fought the best 155-er in the world, he just might be even more cocky in fighting a lesser than BJ opponent in Clay Guida.

However Guida’s strategy i think will be to dominate Florian like Sean Sherk did. Florian has gotten a lot better since then, but i don’t feel that he has the strength that Guida has nor the fierceness. Guida just took a super beatdown from Sanchez and survived that brutal kick to the jaw so i’m sure that whatever Florian can dish out Guida can take.

I feel that either Guida will get submitted or Florian will get out wrestled in this fight. This is a huge fight for both guys, it really is because Guida has never relly reached that next level where he would be in position for a title shot and Florian lost both of his title fights so he really is going to have to bust his a$$ to get another shot if he ever gets one(doubtful).

  • carls says:

Looks like the UFC realized they lost some of their star power from the 107 card and are trying to beef it up again.

I agree with Marvel in that Guida will get subbed or Florian will get pounded on for 3 rounds. This is a good fight. Im realy curious as to who Edgar is gonna be facing next. After a win over Sherk you gotta give the kid a big name but it seems like they are all taken.

  • animosity says:

Yeah I think they need some big names after the Rampage debacle. I’m heated about them not fighting that was one to look forward to. I’m sure they will fight in the future hopefully.
Guida will more than likely use his wrestling. I think if Florian don’t hurt him quick it’s gonna be a long night.

  • Clay Guida is stuck in that “almost but not quite yet a title contender” thing, he had a chance against Huerta and then with Diego and came up short both times so he really needs this win especially against a highly regarded contender like Ken-flo. Because if Clay loses he’ll fall to Sherk status and not be important at 155 anymore.

Florian is in the same boat. He IMO desperately needs this win and a big win,not decision but decisive victory because like i said before he’s had not 1 but 2 title shots where he came short, some guys only get one shot and most never do so he really needs to impress and whip some a$$ to justify another shot if he ever even gets close to another which i honestly feel he will not being that guys like Maynard and Edgar are coming up and if history has shown us one thing is that Ken-flo doesn’t do well against established powerful wrestlers(Sherk,Sanchez).

Whoever wins this fight will IMO just “stay alive” in the 155 division but whoever loses most likely kisses their title aspirations good bye.

Personally i’ll be rooting for Guida, not because i like him more than Ken-flo, but because Florian had 2 shots and didn’t come through and Clay is still young and the dude has busted his a$$ and has never had that opportunity so i’m picking The Carpenter via decision.

    • Jenkinsss says:

“Because if Clay loses he’ll fall to Sherk status and not be important at 155 anymore.”
      MK4,
Dude i hear where your coming from, but i gotta disagree with that statement…

Sherk lost to BJ, then beat Tyson, then lost to Edgar. Sure thats a losing record but if you think about it…its not THAT bad. He just needs to stop trying to out-box everyone and go back to his original fight style.

Guida has proved that he belongs in the octagon with the top contenders at 155.

He lost a close fight to the #1 contender, he beat Diaz, Danzig, and almost beat Huerta. That right there says that he is improving, and he is a top fighter at 155.

Sure, he’s not on Diego’s level, or BJ’s level, but he is a great fighter nonetheless. And i thnk it will be years until Guide will be considered “not important at 155 anymore”. If he loses to Florian, all he will need is 1 win to be considered a top fighter at 155 again…
Besides, I think he will go the distance with Florian, and win a decision as well.

      • Jenkinss,

dude i agree with you. I think that if Guida beats Kenny he’ll be right up there and problably be one high profile win away from a title shot. But if he does lose it will really hurt his status because there will only be so many guys left at 155 that he has not fought yet and if he ends up losing to Florian, who will he fight next? Joe Daddy? I sure hope Guida gets the W though.

      • Jenkinsss says:

I think if Guida loses, he should fight Sherk. Both guys have great cardio, theyre wicked strong, and have good takedowns and wrestling. They both also seem to think that they can stand up and bang with great boxers haha.
        Sad but true.

A fight with Joe Daddy would also be interesting

If Ken-flo loses I think a match against Sherk would also be interesting seeing how it would be a rematch and they would both be in dire need of a big win.

  • chris says:

Guida will stay in ufc even if he loses. He’s got quite a few fans.

  • paino says:

    Carpenter via decision no dought!!!

  • Jenkinsss says:

If all of the rumored fights scheduled for UFC 107 end up going through. Then that card will be hella sickkk (even without the Rampage-Rashad fight).

I think Florian might overlook Guida, and if he does, he will lose. Guida is one of my favorite fighters, he never quits, and he is a beast for his size. I think Guide will take this fight via split decision. Takedowns will be the factor.

  • yoyoma says:

guida is dank with no skills, just pure aggression. he’s got a good chin though. flo by split decision.

  • I see this going the same was as Florian and Huerta. I dont think Clay will be able to close the distance and get Florian to the mat. Florian dances around and picks him apart on the feet to a UD.

    • Jenkinsss says:

are you promoting a diff MMA website ON an MMA website? i sure hope not, cuz that would be messssed up to the Frenzy community IMO

      • jcohl says:

Not to sound like a di<k, jenkinsss, but we've already been thru this, and fighttrends.com has been identified as a friend to the frenZied community and cleared to visit here as often as he likes by the powers that be.
It's cool, though, because at first I think a lot of us were like, "WTF?!", but Justin or maybe fr702 got it all sorted out…
        ;)

      • fr702 says:

        Jenkinsss,

I appreciate you passion and good looking out for the FrenZy, its super awesome.. Yes FightTrends does have “permission” to post here on the FrenZy per Kris…. I thank you for looking out have a good one cheers!

      • Kris Karkoski says:

As fr said, FightTrends is cool to be linking up his website on Frenzy, as is any other site, as long as they’re adding to the conversation. But thanks for looking out for us!

      • jcohl says:

Maybe to avoid poor fighttrends.com getting the stink-eye from well-meaning but uninformed frenZied, like I was a few days ago, maybe we could get some sort of announcement welcoming fighttrends.com to the community?
No big deal either way, just offering maybe a helpful suggestion…

      • Jenkinsss, my site isn’t a competitor to MMAFrenzy at all so I don’t think it is “messssed up”. Go to nearly any blog or website and you will find owners of other sites posting on other sites in the same niche. We are all part of the MMA community. More comments and conversation on this site is good for MMAFrenzy and its community. If I was here posting my link and not contributing that would absolutely be messed up, but I am not.

Now, how would you like to have six pack abs in 2 weeks Jenkinsss? I have just the product for you!

      • lol, thanks jcohl. My skin is pretty thick so I am holding up ok. I think I can hold the tears in until the smoke clears.

      • Justin says:

        Jenkinsss,
We appreciate the sentiment, but trust me when I say, all first time commentators must be approved, and all first time links must be approved before they appear on the site. If he was a problem, you wouldn’t see the posts.

        Jcohl,
As far as an announcement, as much has been said on comments, and if you read the above you will see that their should be no need. Perhaps we need to make it more clear to people before they comment that first time comments are moderated.

      • Jenkinsss says:

Oh okay got it. I didnt mean to come off like an a$$ or anything, i was just wondering haha. know what i mean? but thanks guys

      • Justin says:

No worries Jenkinsss, it’s good to see that people are protective of the site.

      • carls says:

Jeez guys I come home from a tragically hip concert(best canadian band ever) and come on the FrenZy and Im like “wow ten new comments on the Florian/Guida thread nice” and its just you goons going on about Fighttrends.com and what not.;) Guess there isnt much more that can be said about the fight anyways.

      • No worries Jenkinsss. I know you were just looking out for the Frenzy.

  • BuzzBradski says:

The Carpenter has it nailed down.

  • Vinz_Clortho says:

Everyone knows Guida could fight anyone in the div and give them a run and if they don’t fight perfect he will win. That’s why he is important. He may not have the KO power but he is a beast for anyone to fight.. and the dude has a head made of STONE… DAMN STONE.. people break parts of their bodies on his head.. nuff said :D
