Matt Hamill vs. Jon Jones Agreed for TUF 10 Finale in December

Matt HamillLight heavyweights Matt Hamill and Jon Jones have agreed to meet at The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale on December 5 in Las Vegas, according to MMA Madness, with bout agreements pending for the matchup that would co-headline the Spike TV-televised event.

Hamill (6-2) had been scheduled to fight Brandon Vera at UFC 102 in August, but was forced to withdraw from the fight in July after suffering a knee injury. “The Hammer” has bounced back from an August 2008 loss to Rich Franklin with back-to-back wins over Reese Andy and, most-recently in March, Mark Munoz.

Jones (9-0), considered one of the top prospects at 205-pounds, earned decision victories over Andre Gusmao and Stephan Bonnar in his first two UFC fights before submitting Jake O’Brien in the second-round at UFC 100 in July.

ooooo shiza this is gonna be good. anything associated with TUF 10 will prob be good. exciting season can’t wait!

  • Hamill vs Jones is an interesting fight. Jones has serious skill but Hamill is most likely going to out power and out wrestle Jones and pound out a tko or decision. If the fight stays standing than Jones can problably get a tko but Hamill is no pushover, he did Cro-cop Munoz, i have Hamill winning a decision, his wrestling is too good IMO and the dude is a smart and strong fighter.

  • Gunslinger says:

good match making by joe silva……this is gonna be a solid test for jones and a solid test fro hamill also…..a win by jones would mean hes ready for some big names…..but a win for hamill could be just what he needs to put him back in the conversation as a top ten lhw in the ufc

    • Gunslinger says:

forgot to say though…i have jones by UD….jones wrestling and standup will be easily enough to overcome hamill in this one i think

      • MR.BUSHIDO says:

i agree gunslinger i have bones ud as well , much like the hammil franklin fight which i witnessed in person by the way , without the tko by liver shot . a win would def put hammil back up there but bones is gonna give alot of people problems right now and hammil will be a continuation of bones climb up the ladder …….. but hang on tight bones there is some serious talent the higher you climb …….. to be continued

  • Nightmare says:

    great test for Jones.

Jones by flying spinning back knee! kind of like a tornado kick. if you know what that is because i took Tae Kwon Do

  • hammer says:

wow! great match…big test for jones.
I see hamill winning aswel tko 2nd round i think thears 2much pressure on jones already which might get him in trouble imo..but saing that i pulling for jones lol… Also i love to see a luiz cane vs brandon verra sometime itll b a exciting as hell

  • matt says:

i dont see hammil being able to shut jones down, jones is just going to be too slippery and will land scoring blows and throws(possibly depending on how worried he is of being on the ground) all night long. jones by ud.

  • flatlandtom says:

jon jones is a beast 2nd round tko

  • Turk says:

I got Jones by KO Hamill tends to carry his hands very low especially when he tiring. Jones will take advantage of this and end Matt’s night. I think if Hamill and Rich weren’t such good friends Flanklin would have finished the fight way before he did. I also would like to add Hamill is a stud, he just needs to work on his boxing.

  • Rsky says:

I see Jones being way too fast and strong in the striking game for Hamill to keep up with him. I like Hamill but he usually looks sluggish in the stand-up part of the game. Both good wrestlers but watch for Jones’ speed and explosiveness to be the difference. My prediction Hamill takes a beating for a round and a half before throwing in the towel due to strikes. Should be a fun fight.

  • animosity says:

Let’s go Jones. I think this is gonna be the fight everyone sees that Jones is for real if they thought he wasn’t. I agree that his speed will be a factor in the match. Hamill’s striking isn’t up to par. Should be entertaining.

  • Lex415 says:

I love it, everyone is divided! I like both, alot, but I say Hamill with the UD. Not saying it’s going to be easy tho!

  • yoyoma says:

I AM SO PUMPED ABOUT THIS MATCHUP. I was at the Ultimate Finale 9 i may have to head down to this card. This is going to be a sick matchup…

Does anyone know if this is the main event???

Anyways, Jones is good but Hamill is no Bonner or O’Brien. I say Hamill by split or UD.

  • Jenkinsss says:

This is an interesting matchup. Im a fan of both, and they both have some advantages in this fight. For everyone saying that Jones is stronger than Hamill, what are yall smoking? Hamill has gorilla like strength and olympic calibur wrestling. He has also faced better competition.(Franklin, Bisping). The only advantages i give Jones are his speed, and decent striking advantage. Its a classic matchup of power/wrestling vs speed/striking.

I see Bones coming out strong and picking Hamill apart with quick punches and some slick striking combinations. However I think Hamill wont get KO’d by Jones. I think he will eventually get the takedown and pound on Jones for a little bit. Once he gets one takedown…he will get a few more, and we all know that when close fights go to decision, takedowns play a huge role in who comes out with the W.

Its a tough pick, but i have to go with Hamill via split decision.

Whoever loses this fight, wont move down the rankings very far in my opinion.
I think Hamill is along the lines of a gatekeeper in the LHW division (along with Jardine and formerly Stephen Bonnar)

  • Tough fight here. Jones is taking a big risk in this one. Jones is shooting his way up the rankings and if he can beat Hamill in a convincing way he is gonna start turning some heads.

  • White_Boy says:

Hammil is a great wrestler and a decent (howbeit improving) striker. Jones is a good wrestler who hasnt even showed it very much because his striking is on another level than Hammill. The only way for Hammill to win is to put people to sleep. (i.e. Gray Maynard, spend 15 minutes dry-humping).

  • Great call by Joe Silva/Dana. I’m personally a huge fan of both, love Bones Jones style and Matt is a homeboy outta the Nasty Nati so I’m content. This match-up poses more problems for Hamill though imo, because Jones’s ability to use leverage and and timing in his takedowns can potentially hang with Matt’s exceptional wrestling. I don’t see Hamill having an answer for that in his striking despite kicking Munoz’s head off last fight.

I’m so geeked for this fight that I can forget about Rampage/Rashad.

    NOT.

I’ll have some select words about that soon. :D

  • Justin says:

I think Jones will take this one since Hamill seems to have grown to like his stand up a little too much for my liking. If he tries to stand up with Jones, he will get hurt then submitted, or just straight TKOed. If Hamill tries to use his wrestling again, it will be a more interesting fight, but I think Jones’ wrestling can hang with Hamill’s.

  • muaythai4life says:

I am surprised by how many people believe that Jone’s wrestling is comparable to Hamill’s. I know he was a state champion in highschool, and an all american in jr college, but Matt Hamill is on another level entirely. Hamill is a 3x NCAA champion and really pushed fellow NCAA champion Munoz in the grappling war. I think if Hamill stands with Jones he goes to sleep, but if Hamill wants to take this fight to the ground, that is where it is going to be all night.

    • Justin says:

Hamill is a D3 champ, and he and Munoz hardly grappled in that fight. He has also fallen in love with his stand up, and seems to me that he is working on his stand up way more than his wrestling. If he doesn’t use it, it won’t be as good. If he proves me wrong, good for him, but I don’t think it’s that great, he was just better than everyone on TUF 3.

    • timcat says:

Jones has Olympic caliber Greco Roman skills, Hammill is not even close to that level!!

      • muaythai4life says:

How do you figure he has olympic caliber Greco Roman skills? Jones may very well posses those skills, but until he either tries out and is accepted on an olympic team, or is sought after by the olympic team, or something other that proves he is at that level other than throwing stephan bonner I doubt he is THAT good.

  • Tspence says:

i love this, this is the kind of matchup every type of fan loves to watch, i cant wait, will be explosive. hard to say who will win, with they’re skills os many possibilities!

  • jcohl says:

I think this is a situation wherein Hamill’s camp need to sit him down and ask him to knock that sh!t off of trying to stand and trade with everyone, and remind him that at this stage of his career, wins are more important that performances.

Keeping the fight on the vertical plane is fine if you come into this sport thru a strike-heavy art, like kickboxing or karate, but when you come into this sport rocking a hat trick of NCAA D3 wrestling championships, you put your man on the mat, and keep him on the damned mat until the round or the fight is over.

I understand that there is some subtle pressure to not “lay and pray”, or “grope and hope”, as some might call it, but winning ugly is better than losing pretty when you’re forcing your way thru the most crowded division in the UFC, despite what Dana says about wanting to see certain types of fights in the Octagon.
If it were up to El Supremo Blanco, every UFC bout would more closely resemble rock ‘em sock’em robots than MMA contests.

If Hamill does the right thing here, he should be able to score a UD or get a ref stoppage by controlling his man on the ground and commanding the cage, but if he decides he wants to spend 15 minutes throwing hands with a guy who’s stand-up style can best be described as “Tekken”, he’s going to wind up catching five across the eyes and have his night ended prematurely…

good for you dude no one cares wow what is going on right now
