Mike Swick Ready to Return at UFC 104, Wants to Fight Matt Hughes
Welterweight contender Mike Swick, who last week was forced to withdraw from his September 19 UFC 103 matchup against Martin Kampmann after suffering a concussion in training, recently Tweeted that he’ll be able to return by UFC 104 on October 24 and is hoping to fight Matt Hughes in his next bout.
“No next opponent has been offered, but yes I would love to fight Hughes. I will be ready by UFC 104 so just waiting for the UFC to call,” wrote Swick. “I have no set return yet. I will be ready by UFC 104. So 104, 105, 106, 107… I will fight as soon as I get an opportunity!”
Last week, Hughes announced that h’d signed a multi-fight extension with the UFC and was in talks to fight an opponent he’s never faced before, though the opponent as well as a possible return date were not disclosed.

Just to annoy gunslinger, I’m gonna say Hughes taps to a Swick-otine.
Nah Swick by ko
UFC 105 has no main event…Joe Silva make it happen!
Surprised Swick is calling Hughes out. Although I think Hughes has taken a couple steps back in his abilities this is still a tough fight for Swick. Seems to me Swick could wait out his injury and then come back to a tuneup fight and then go against GSP. Glad to see fighters taking tough fights instead of the easy way.
swick is gonna do major daMMAge to hughes , i say start planning his retirement party cause he aint gonna see the end of his new contract taking these kind of fights . he’d be much better off fighting trigg again …karo…..koscheck… maybe even fitch , maybe , but not someone like swick thats gonna knock his block off ! dont worry matt you will have alot of time to do your hunting show soon !!!
While I like both Hughes and Swick, I have no interest in seeing them fight each other at this point in their careers. I think Swick is entering his prime right now, while Hughes is in the twilight of his career and has nothing left to prove. This is a dangerous fight for Hughes without a very tangible reward for him if he wins (which I doubt he will.) I’d rather see him try to finally beat Dennis Hallman, or finally fight Karo Parysian. I just don’t see this ending well for Hughes at all.
Of course Swick want to fight Hughes when he’s in the twilight of his career on his way out, i gurantee he would not have been so eager to fight Matt Hughes who arm-barred GSP and tko’d BJ while choking out Trigg, if Swick wants a real challenge and a chence ot prove his “quick” striking give him Alves. A win over Hughes IMO would not justify a title shot, i say if Kampmann beats Daley and Swick beats Hughes then have them face off like they were supposed to and then we can justify a title fight.
I say forget Thiago Alves vs. Paul Thiago and Swick vs. Hughes. I’d rather see Swick vs. Alves at UFC 107, and Hughes vs. Karo Parisyan or Hallman. Winner of Swick / Aves fights winner of Kampmann / Daley for a title shot. Next title shot goes to winner of Fitch / Almeida.
I like the way you think.
Hallman is fighting John Howard at 106.
I love hughes and hopes he wins but i say it’s swick’s time. may not give him title shot but it would be great to say that i beat Matt Hughes! or like i Knocked out hughes or sub.
This is the match Swick wanted in the first place. He called out Hughes at UFC 99. He just really wanted to fight him in Texas. I think he sees this as a easier fast track to the title. I dont like it tho. I think its cowardly for a person on the verge of a title fight to call out an over the hill former titlist. But o well. Give him Rumble at 104, iono. But I dont like this move.
This fight can in no way benefit Swick, so it’s stupid to ask for it. Best case scenario, he beats Matt Hughes. Big deal, Hughes is nothing like the fighter he once was. A win over Hughes does not get a title shot. He loses, well there goes his title contention, he just lost to a washed up Matt Hughes. Start climbin again. How about callin out tough fighters, like a Kos, Alves, or Fitch or even Paulo Thiago (Same camp or not). I don’t really care to see Hughes fight after his UD win over Serra.
smart move by swick, beat a big name then move on to gsp, still cant see anybody beatin gsp tho, come to think ov it i cant see any of the current ufc champs gettin beat anytime soon, i would like to see rampage fight machida tho,
This is a pretty easy one for Swick IMO. Makes me kinda think he didn’t want the fight against Kamp.
He’s been calling out Hughes for awhile now, he def mentioned it after the Saunders fight.
I think he wants to fight Hughes not because he wants to “challenge” himself but because he wants to have a big name fighter under his belt… the problem is this isn’t the old Hughes. Whatever, still props if he beats Hughes but I wouldn’t really call it much of an accomplishment at this point. Its kinda like the Kos Trigg match.
This isnt a great matchup to be honest…
We all know that Swick has great striking, speed, and takedown defense. That skill set could allow Swick to pick Hughes apart pretty easily.
I will NEVER count Hughes out of a fight, but i think Swick would win that fight. Hughes would struggle getting Swick down, and once he does, he will have to do serious damage. Otherwise it will be a pretty easy win for Quick Swick.
I agree with MK4, Alves vs Swick would be a much better matchup. It would also make more sense.
Why would Swick go from one fight from a title fight to a ight against Hughes who is, umm, done. This is a lose-lose situation for Swick. If he loses, there goes any shot at GSP for a year or so. If he wins, it better be in 45 seconds or, yep, still no title shot. Dumb move.
I think this is a bad fight for Swick. I think Hughes’s style is to much for Swick. Only chance I think he would have would be a punchers chance.
I think Swick is calling out Hughes just to have a chance to beat the legend before he retires. I agree with everyone else that it would do little to nothing for his title hopes to beat Hughes, and would clearly derail him if he loses.
As far as Hughes saying he would be fighting someone he hasn’t faced yet, well, there are a lot of welterweights he hasn’t fought yet, I just hope it’s a fight he can win.
Swick would probably make quick work of Hughes NOW. Not so sure a few years ago.
Mike Swick might think that a win over an aging Matt Hughes is a ticket to a front row seat of a GSP a$$-beating, but if he loses he could find his next fight in the prelims, considering how the talent level is rising faster than the Mississippi in flood season.
Also, a lot of the guys in my gym today were saying that they thought that Swick’s “injury”, which caused him to pull out of his fight with a very tough Martin Kampmann, was most likely an injury of opportunism, if and when the Hughes fight opportunity materializes.
I don’t like to think along those lines, but things being what they are, anything is possible…
I really doubt that Swick would fain an injury to get out of a guaranteed fight with guaranteed number one contender implications in order to hopefully get a fight that might or might not have number one contender implications. I also doubt he would do anything to make the UFC’s job more difficult, given that he was already ready to jump the AKA ship in favor of towing the company line when the video game contract debacle happened with John Fitch.
Agreed.
I really just threw that out there to see if any of the collective had smiliar thoughts, or if the gym rats are all conspiracy theorists…
You know better than anyone that the collective loves nothing more than taking a good conspiracy theory, beating it to death, then flogging it again for another few days.
how bout Paul D vs Hughes at 103? and Swick vs Kampman at 104?
Ive never known Hughes ta take a fight on one weeks notice.
It’s very interesting how this is playing out for swick. If I remember correctly, swick wanted to fight hughes and was really campaigning for it right after his ben saunders win. I mean the guy more than called him out. He wanted the hughes fight. Why? Hughes is past his prime, pretty one dimensional BUT, is still a big name. So i’m guessing swick feels very confident that he can beat hughes and feels that if he gets by hughes he’ll get his shot. Joe silva had other things in mind though. He wanted swick vs kampann and the winner gets as hot. Sounds fair enough to me. Oh wait…swick suddenly gets injured, is forced to withdraw from 103 but is now ready to return @ 104 and is yet again trying to fight hughes??!?!?!? I don’t think anyone can argue with me now when I say that the aka ww’s are trying to find easy roads to a title. THis whole situation is just funny to me.
@ jazzkok – I’m not saying that you’re wrong about AKA’s title strategy, but maybe a kinder way to put it is their fighters are trying to take smarter fights, and not harder fights, in their efforts to secure title shots?
And in one way I can’t blame them.
Five years ago, you’d win a few fights, beat a few ranked guys, and get your title shot. In Fall 2009 you win a few fights, beat a few ranked guys, and THEN try to make your way past a half dozen or so other guys in your division who’ve done the exact same thing.
Now you also have to consider the flashiness of your fight style, personal charisma and appearance, your personal relationship with the front office, and your CAMP’s relationship with the front office, and so on.
It’s a much steeper climb these days in pretty much every division, so I can almost understand why camps in general and fighters in partiuclar need to put more thought into the fights they take, and the fights they wave off…
