Fans who were looking forward to Jon Jones-Alexander Gustafsson II may be disappointed today, but if they’re hoping to see the light-heavyweight champ get tested, it certainly looks like Anthony Johnson is up for the task.
If you missed last night’s UFC on FOX 14 card, then you didn’t see Johnson stun Gustafsson early on with a big right hand, and then put away the #1 contender with punches from above. It was a very impressive performance for Johnson, who continues to badly out gun the opposition with his ridiculous power.
Of course, with the win, Johnson has locked up a title fight with the champion Jones, and “Rumble” clearly likes his chances. While speaking to FOX Sports after the victory, here is some of what Johnson had to say about last night’s win, and facing Jones (quotes via FOX Sports press release):
“I knew I had a job to do. My goal is to win the title one day, so I knew I had to get through Gus. I had to make it ugly for him so people wouldn’t doubt me. Now, I’m going against the champ and they’re going to doubt me, so I have to prove them wrong, too.”
“The same way I took Gus out, I’ll knock him out,” Johnson added, while discussing how he’ll end the lengthy reign of Jones. “I’m going to do my best to take his head off.”
“Jon, keep your hands up, because if you don’t, it’s lights out.”
Yes, that advice pretty much applies to anyone who faces Johnson, as clearly he remains a dangerous finisher, just like he was when he was still fighting at 170.
There’s been no word as to when Jones-Johnson will take place, but one would think the UFC will look to book the bout for early summer.
It will also be interesting to see what’s next for Gustafsson. Perhaps a bout with the #2 ranked Daniel Cormier can’t be far away? Since both men have been defeated by Jones, then why not right? It’s certainly a fight a lot of people would like to see. It’s also crazy to question who might be next for Jones, if he gets by Johnson? Any names pop up at all?
UFC on FOX 14 went down at the Tele2 Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.
