Matt Hughes Signs Multi-Fight Extension With UFC, Next Fight Not Decided

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Sep 3, 2009 at 4:23 pm ET34 Comments

Matt HughesFormer welterweight champion and future hall of famer Matt Hughes recently signed a multi-fight extension with the UFC, but an opponent has not yet been determined for his next fight.

From Hughes’ official website:

Last week I went out to Vegas and I signed a multi-fight deal with the UFC, which is much like my last contract. I also brought up the fact that I wanted to do a hunting show and they thought that would be a good thing. They still have to find out who, where and when my next fight will be and I will try to post that info ASAP. Nothing is decided yet, so anything you might be reading on the internet right now is just rumors and speculation. However, one name the UFC did bring up is a person I’ve never fought before.

Hughes (43-7) topped rival Matt Serra by unanimous decision in his last fight in May, rebounding from back-to-back losses to Thiago Alves and Georges St-Pierre.

    Hughes vs. McLovin!

But seriously, why the eff would the UFC be interested in doing a hunting show with Matt Hughes? Makes no sense to me.

  • HendoFan says:

    Hughes vs BONES JONES!

  • clown says:

as long as he is comfortable never making a run at the title again…

  • yoyoma says:

i think they might do a Penn Hughes III matchup at a catch weight for at least one of the fights he has remaining. Just my thought, it would sell and i’m sure BJ wants a shot at Hughes again, he’s said it many times.

  • jcohl says:

I think this contract extension is much along the lines of Randy Couture’s, in that Zuffa wants to make sure that their current and future Hall of Famers aren’t ending their careers out on some Indian reservations someplace, or worse yet, anywhere in the Strikeforce Alliance…

    • jcohl says:

And as for the “person I’ve never fought before” Hughes references, maybe its someone like Josh Koscheck? Or even Jon Fitch, who really sort of has nowhere to go at 170 unless his mothership comes back to Earth and beams GSP up?

    • fr702 says:

actually jcohl if Hughes were to sign with the StrikeForce/FEG alliance that wouldn’t be half bad, yet again another random jab at strikeforce nice :P

but I will agree that ZUFFA is keeping their HOF’ers close to home and rightfully so

      • jcohl says:

Actually I meant that as worse for the UFC, not as a shot to Strikeforce.
I’d like to see Strikeforce do well, and continue to carry Showtime to support them. I have seen some random shots at Strikeforce, although I’m not sure why. It isn’t like they’re competing neck and neck with the UFC, or doing any damage to the sport.
In fact, they serve the sport and the fans well by offering more product.
        Sorry for the confusion…

      • fr702 says:

        jcohl,

just joking with you a bit hence :P <– this guy owell…

  • thestandard says:

Hopefully the UFC sets up Hughes vs. Koschek.

When Hughes fights wrestlers the fights are always entertaining. Plus, it’s two guys I love to hate beating on each other, which is another bonus.

  • DaNNy_BoY says:

If Kos beats Trigg I could see the UFC putting Kos against Hughes at UFC 108 or 109

  • thestandard says:

Now that I think a litle harder about this…isn’t the Heat on his way back from suspension?

Karo has never fought Hughes and that’s a fight that should have happened for the title three years ago.

A must win for both guys too. I think that has the makings of the best fight/pre-fight buildup.

  • Nightmare says:

i love Hughes but after this contract ends should retire.

  • yoyoma says:

He’s going to fight Kos, Trigg, BJ Penn. In any order, if he can make it through 3 fights.

  • Not a fan of Hughes by any stretch, but it’s good to see him back if he can hang and perform. To me it looked like he lost some of his fire, but if he can regain his confidence and supreme will to fight I’d enjoy watching him. The names that pop out at me for good matchups to determine if he’s still got it are Kos, Fitch, Hardy, Parisyan, Trigg, Marcus Davis, or a rematch with Alves.

  • fred says:

Did I see somewhere that Dennis Hallman is coming back to the UFC? I’m sure Matt would like to avenge that loss.

    • fr702 says:

      *losses…. Extreme Challenge 21 (t)ko {guillotine choke} & UFC 29 (armbar)

I’m not sure the length of Hallman’s contract with Strikeforce

      • jcohl says:

Wouldn’t it have been cool if Strikeforce had been trying to lure Hughes away from the UFC and into Strikeforce with the promise of a Hallman fight [and of course huge money], which triggered Hughes’ re-signing with the big show?
        ;)

  • muaythai4life says:

I like that Hughes is resigning. I think that he is still a force at 170lbs. Hughes needs to get into a better camp though for sure. I think he is in the same boat as Randy/Chuck/Franklin, people still want to see Hughes fight, but his two devistating losses two GSP make a title shot impossible. But I think he still can beat a good number of guys, and really do a few legendary fights (Hallman, Trigg, Penn, Karo, Serra again, etc.,)

    • David Morris says:

I’m not so sure about Hughes fighting Penn again. The fans have already seen that more than once. The UFC should be continually offering new stuff and evolving the sport – not taking us back to 2006. The UFC can earn money without fights like that.

Hughes against Karo would be interesting. Karo will definitely be rusty after such a long layoff and Hughes would be attemping to put consecutive wins together for the first time since 2006 – a definite incentive for him.

The whole thing with Serra is finished, so a rematch wouldn’t make any sense. The same goes for a possible fight with Frank Trigg.

I remember reading something which mentioned that Hughes has said he considers the thing with Hallman part of history, so a rematch might not happen. I would like to see it though – it has to goe differently this time.

  • yoyoma says:

Why would you not want to see Penn vs Hughes rubber match. I could already see the story line.

BJ wants revenge, says he’s in the best shape of his life, and he’s training like a champion and living like one everyday.

Hughes claims he’s not that old and he still has what it takes to beat BJ. He beat him the second time around and he can still do it again.

They have both stated that they would like to do the fight. I doubt that Dana will refuse a request of 2 UFC hall of famers IMO.

but this fight would happen maybe 2nd or 3rd fight Hughes has.

    • jcohl says:

The reason why I do not want to see Hughes-Penn 3 is because I prefer to see Penn cement his position as then best 155er ever born, and “Anderson Silva” the LW division.
Penn doesn’t need anymore super-fights in the next year, which is abundantly clear of you re-watch his last fight with the Greatness. What Penn needs to do is silence the annoying-as-fu<k Diego Sanchez, preferably by submission or ref stoppage, and then poop in the breakfast cereal of all those Maynard-ians out there who think their boy has a shot at beating the Prodigy by hooking the Bully in something really unique, like the Death Star variant of the pentagram choke…
      ;)

  • jcohl says:

I for one have supported both Hughes and BJ Penn at different points of my MMA life, and I have ZERO desire to see them step in against each other again.
muaythai4life does make an excellent point, as have some others over in the forum, that since leaving Miletich and Bettendorf, Iowa to form Tean Hughes and the H.I.T. [Hughes Intensive Training] Squad over in Granite City, Hughes has definitely NOT looked like, “the most dominant welterweight champion of all times”, as El Supremo Blanco has repeatedly called him.
Possibly a return to his training roots might spark a return to his championship form, or as near to as he can manage at his age?

As for future Hughes match-ups, I have to hand it to thestandard.
His calling for Karo Parisyan and Hughes is probably the most interesting fight out there for the former champ right now. If I were a more discriminating MMA fan, instead of just blindly buying every UFC PPV that I don’t attend, I would be hard-pressed to justify dropping a fifty on another Hughes-Serra fight, or another Hughes-Trigg fight.
Also, at this stage of his career, I really have no desire to see a once-dominant champion get worked by Jon Fitch for 15 minutes or “rumbled” by Anthony Johnson…

  • frantzfanon says:

As long as Hughes doesn’t bring up fighting Amderson Silva again….
