In one of the best performances of his young career, Brad Tavares gets back into the win column with a big decision victory against the veteran in former Strikeforce champion Nate Marquardt. Clean boxing technique and a steady stream of leg kicks kept Marquardt at bay and frustrated on the outside. Marquardt scored early on in the first round with a front kick to the chin of Tavares, but overall his offensive approach seemed limited to sudden blitzes of punches that Tavares was able to defend against.
Tavares controlled the center of the cage throughout much of the bout. Even though Tavares didn’t show much in terms of variety in his attacks, his boxing was crisp, clean, and most importantly – efficient. Tavares displayed a quick jab that caught Marquardt and bloodied his face in the third round, and even had Marquardt hurt towards the end of the round. Nate was unable to use what would most likely have been a grappling advantage as he was unable to get Tavares down. Brad showed a strong clinch game whenever the fight went there, and even used a hip toss in the second round to put Marquardt down.
Big win for Brad Tavares who took out a very experienced Nate Marquardt. Tavares’s stand up looked crisp, and he really had Marquardt flustered through powerful leg kicks and just a simple striking approach that really didn’t have much holes. Can’t wait to see more of him.
