Kenny FlorianA lightweight matchup between top 155-pounders Kenny Florian and Clay Guida is likely for UFC 106 on November 21 in Las Vegas, according to Fanhouse’s Michael David Smith.

Florian (11-4) won six-straight fights over the likes of Joe Lauzon, Roger Huerta, and Joe Stevenson to earn a shot at the lightweight title, but was submitted by champ BJ Penn in the fourth-round of their bout at UFC 101 earlier this month.

Guida (25-10) dropped a split decision to lightweight contender Diego Sanchez in his most-recent fight in June after previously winning three-straight against Samy Schiavo, Mac Danzig, and Nate Diaz.

UFC 106 is headlined by heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin and also features Tito Ortiz’s return to the Octagon against Mark Coleman and Jon Fitch vs. Ricardo Almeida.

woah this will be an insane bill, guida can’t finish florian but i think he can pull of a decision
i know gunslinger doesn’t think so though because he threw up after i ranked guida as #3 LW in the world

  • animosity says:

I have to take Kenny in this one. I honestly believe that he can beat anyone in the LW besides BJ obviously. I wouldn’t personally say he will destroy Guida simply because no one does that but, yeah Kenny should win.

I was so pi$$ed at Kenny when he kept tring to take down BJ with that pathetic single leg.
After 3 rounds of being unsuccessful you would think he would have tried something else. I
know it was part of the game plan but, if something isn’t working try a different strategy. This is MMa not wrestling Ken-flo. The last time I checked Kenny wasn’t that good at wrestling anyway.

    • fr702 says:

after 3 rounds of failed attempts at a single leg, he got tought a double leg and this one choke thing by some little dude, so I guess that is something new?

    • chrisl says:

Keep in mind you go for the single leg to try and switch off to a double or use a lift to avoid ending up in their guard(like you would on a double). As FR pointed out that double didn’t work out so well. I pointed out before the fight that being in close(and striking) to BJ was a bad idea because of Penn’s power boxing, so going for takedowns was Kenny’s best bet if he couldn’t back out of range.

I do agree that Kenny beats Guida though, I just feel he’s missing one or two things that keep him from being an elite fighter.

  • animosity says:

As strong as you say BJ’s “Power Boxing” is or was he barely rocked Kenny and didn’t drop em!

    • chrisl says:

hmmm so why would it be in Kenny’s game plan to take a former World Jiu-Jitsu champion to the ground when you are a extremely good Muay Thai striker yourself?

      • animosity says:

Kenny’s punches aren’t exactly powerful, although his kicks, knees, and elbows are. Kenny is also a black belt in jits correct me if I’m wrong so he had a chance there I thought, cause Bj’s boxing is ALOT better than his.

      • huertarogerhuerta says:

had a chance on the ground? wit bj? uh did i wake up in bizzaro
world. kenflo stood 1 shot and that was wit his muay thai. a cut a headkick to rock bj those were his outs. tryin to outwork the demigod of jitz on the ground was not one of them. as for kenflo vs wildman guida ill b the odd man out and take guida by ud. i say he takes kenny down and controls him ala sherk but more aggressive

    • jcohl says:

      Trust me.
At 155, Penn’s Western-style boxing is VERY effective in close, and none to shabby at mid-range. The guy did in fact box Golden Gloves back on the Big Island in his youth.
Florian did his level best with his performance and gameplan. If he’d tried to stand with Penn, he had a good chance of getting caught. Not necessarily KO’ed, but caught. That would lead to Florian on the ground with Penn on top of him, which usually preceeds Penn submitting you.
If Florian simply hung back out of range and winged the occasional kick, he would have dropped an embarrassing UD loss and seriously pi$$ed off both Dana White and Joe Silva, not to mention the vast majority of the MMA community.
So Florian opted to shoot for a leg, and take his chances. He hung in for 4 rounds, and then got hooked and submitted by a better fighter. No shame in that.
After all, it’s not like anyone else at 155 is going to beat BJ anytime soon.

Plus, if chrisl gives you a mat breakdown, you should probably take it as gospel, or near as.
      I know I do.
      ;)

Also, I like Florian to beat Guida.
I think Guida is a terrific fighter, and always gives the crowd their money’s worth, but he always seems to be just a half notch back when it comes to beating the top shelf guys.
Will definitely be a good fight, and can only help the 106 card’s buy rates and ticket sales…

      • fr702 says:

Kenny was standing with Penn in the first and got dropped, then Kenny thought he would get all GSP on Penn but ya @155 that isn’t going to work and he paid the price… Penn is waaaayyyyy better on the ground than FLorini but Florini isn’t half bad but he is no BJ Penn bottom line when Penn wanted to end the fight he did, you can see something in him “click” like “ok I’ve played your game time to go home thank you” and boom it was over, perhaps you can’t see it on the telecast but being there live it was something both Eric and myself noticed…

      • chrisl says:

I’ve noticed it before with him FR he always does that. I think that’s why he is so adamant about fighting WW’s at 155 Penn fights like a cat that plays with a mouse before deciding “ok I’m done playing time to die.” Who knows maybe Penn is a cat… would explain why he licks his gloves…

      • chrisl says:

ps- thanks Jcohl at least someone reads it haha

  • cj00 says:

Guida is a warrior but… ive seen the post already, Florian 2nd round submission

  • Big fight for both guys, especially Guida. I expect Guida to take Florian down the whole fight> Florian hasn’t shown that he has the best takedown defense, but if he can keep the fight standing he’ll be able to dominate Guida, but either way if it goes to the ground i feel that Ken-flo has a great chance to get the sub. But if Guida does what he does best he’ll be able to take Kenny down the whole fight, i don’t think that Florian can finish Guida standing because the guy can take a he11 of a lot of punishment. Both guys need the win, but i’m going with Guida simply because i think he’s going to take Florian down the whole fight and neutralize his subs.

    • jcohl says:

I would think that Florian’s best option would be to try and hook and submit Guida during a ground scramble.
CLEARLY Guida can take a punch, or kick, or several combinations thereof. If I were Florian in camp, I would probably concentrate less on my Thai boxing, and more on my BJJ…

      • jcohl,

yeah dude i don’t think that Florian has enough punching or kicking power that can put Guida away, I mean Sanchez has decent power and hit Clay with a clean solid kick right on the money and Guida still survived that, Florian i feel does not have the power that Sanchez has therefore he should stick to his jtz and take the fight to the ground. But i do feel that if Florian allows Guida to be the agressor, he’ll end up losing a decision because as good as Guida is, he’s not great at finishing guys, but non the less should be a good and exciting fight, a must win for both guys. If florian loses he falls even further from another title shot that he already problably is going to have to work his a$$ off for. If Guida loses he’ll drop even more considering that he barely hanging on a thread in contender status.

    • chrisl says:

It’ll come down to Judging styles most likely. I think Guida “cavemans” his way into takedowns like always but if Florian keeps an active guard(ala his mortal enemy D Sanchez) like he typically does and even if he is taken down he can win by controlling the fight once it gets to the ground.

  • paino says:

    GUIDA WILL WIN BY DECISION!!!

  • Nightmare says:

this will be amazing can’t pick a winner i love both. fight of the night anyone?

  • misterraggy says:

Where the hell is Frankie Edgar??? Wasn’t his last fight that upset over Sean Sherk?

  • Jenkinsss says:

This has the makings of a great fight.
I think the only way Ken-flo could win is by submission. Guida is one hell of a tough fighter, and he put up one hell of a fight against Diego, even after he got rocked by that huge head kick. I want to be realistic and say that Florian will win by submission…but i have to go with Guida. I think his pace, wrestling, and takedowns will win him a split decision. I think Florian will come out strong in the first round, and will win that round with ease. After that, I think Guida will do what he always does, pick up the pace, get some takedowns, frustrate his opponent, and he will do so for the last two rounds.
    Guida via split decision.

Also, i think Clay will have a much improved stand up. Especially after the Diego fight. Diego did really well at exposing Guidas weakness.
