Its clear to me that Randy Couture, in addition to being a former LHW and HW champion, is quite probably the best natural [no pun intended] 220 pounder in the history of the UFC.
It’s a shame that there was no weightclass for him to specifically compete in…
On a recent edition of Inside MMA or whatever it’s called on HDNet with Bas, the question was posed that if he were MMA Commisioner for one day, what changes would he make, and he said change heavyweight to 235lbs and make 265 the superheavys. Can’t say I’d be too upset over that except that once again there would be an issue of depth. Everyone complains about the lack of depth as it is, I can’t imagine splitting the division in half would help too much. But then, thinking about it a little more, it would probably hurt the light heavies more. Suddeny there is a possibly better division for guys like Randy, Brandon Vera, and others who have had to cut to LHW because they know that they have no chance of doing anything in a division that requires them to be twenty to thirty pounds heavier than they are walking around.
Thanks bsbiz.
Someone else shot me an email on the whole “Czar of MMA” for a day thing, and I think I’m going to follow up over in the forum area and see what the rest of the collective is thinking.
And yeah, I most definitely agree that the HWs, even though they are improving, are still far and away the leanest [no pun intended] weight class in terms of talent.
I guess that athleticism and size don’t always go as hand in hand as they do at say 170, or 155. The LAST thing the sport needs right now is to split an already meager talent pool, although I would definitely consider it in the future.
Plus, I still think you have a load of tremendous athletes at say 240 and up playing football instead of rolling at a BJJ school or working Thai boxing with a guy like Dellagrotte…
how cool is randy i love the guy, this is guna be a good fight randy is guna be quicker then nog so if he uses his speed an movement i think nog will be in for a long night,
Randy looks ready as usual. I’m going to be there, rooting for Couture of course.
Imagine having a body like that at 46. $hit I don’t have one now at 26.
I don’t think the regular posts are done through gravatar yet (correct me if I’m wrong, Justin), but there are plans to move that way. Here is the link with instructions to set one up that way.
Couture is a freak of nature, i say that in a good way though. I cant think of another athlete in the world that is on his level at that age. People try to brag about Brett Favre and stuff like that, but to be fighting at the highest level of competition at Randy’s age, thats simply amazing. The dude is awesome. Thats all there is to it.
Lets go Randy
