Considering Rafael dos Anjos was ranked #3 heading into his bout this Saturday with Nate Diaz, he needed to have a big night in order to raise his stock, and the lightweight did just that.
As you almost certainly know by now, RDA dominated Diaz at UFC on FOX 13 and received a unanimous decision win for his efforts. Well, the media panel that determines the promotion’s rankings clearly liked what they saw, as dos Anjos has moved up two spots and is now ranked #1. So does this mean Khabib Nurmagomedov is no longer the #1 contender?
Not exactly. According to the new rankings the world class grappler is tied with dos Anjos, and is also ranked #1….UFC President Dana White confirmed after the event that dos Anjos will face Pettis next, since Nurmagomedov is still recovering from knee surgery (although “The Eagle” says he can fight in April or May).
Gilbert Melendez, however, has dropped a position and is now ranked #3. The former Strikeforce champ fought champion Anthony Pettis earlier this month and was submitted in the second round.
Matt Mitrione also benefited from his UFC on FOX 13 victory, as the heavyweight has jumped two positions into the #12 ranking, after quickly stopping Gabriel Gonzaga. The latter fell two spots and is now #14.
Of course, the TUF 20 Finale went down on Friday, and several fighters have improved their ranking as a result.
For example, featherweight Charles Oliveira has leaped up four spots into the #10 ranking, following his decision win over Jeremy Stephens. “Lil Heathen” fell a position and is now #11.
John Moraga is climbing back up the flyweight rankings, as he moved from the #5 spot into #4, as a result of his submission win over Willie Gates,
And, the UFC has posted the strawweight rankings, now that the TUF 20 competition is officially over. Carla Esparza became the promotion’s first strawweight champ on Friday, by tapping out Rose Namajunas in round three.
In addition, Joanna Jedrzejcyk worked her way to a split decision win over Claudia Gadelha at UFC on FOX 13, and Jedrzejcyk is sitting in the #1 contender ranking and the latter is ranked #2.
Jessica Penne is sitting at #3, Namajunas is #4, and Tecia Torres is ranked #5. You can check out the rest of the strawweight rankings, and all the divisions, by heading here.
