Thiago AlvesWelterweights Thiago Alves and Paulo Thiago are likely to square off at UFC 107 on December 12 in Memphis, Tennessee, according to MMAjunkie.

Both Alves (16-5) and Thiago (11-1) suffered unanimous decision losses in their most-recent bouts last month at UFC 100, with Alves dropping a decision to welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre, while Thiago was topped by Jon Fitch.

Prior to the losses, Alves had won seven-straight fights, including victories over Josh Koscheck, Karo Parisyan, and Matt Hughes, while Thiago improved his undefeated record to 11-0 with an upset knockout of Josh Koscheck in his UFC debut.

UFC 107 is headlined by Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Rashad Evans and is also rumored to feature a heavyweight matchup between Frank Mir and Cheick Kongo.

Why does Paulo Thiago keep fighting cans? First Koscheck, then Fitch and now Alves?! Give him some real competition.

Paulo Thiago is going to get hurt, and well other than a punchers chance what really is there for Paulo? Perhaps Alves will “look” over his opponent ala Jardine v Alexander but I doubt it.. I’m not sure if Alves is 2 wins away from a rematch with the Greatness but if Alves does win this “next” fight I would like to see Fitch v Alves II for the #1 contender spot but we shall see..

So did Paulo rear end Dana’s Ferrari or something? Never have I seen someone who has never fought in the UFC before have such a tough first three fights.

To me personally the UFC is trying to get rid of Paulo. This might sound harsh but the UFC has been aquiring alot of fighters lately. And has even had a few MW drop down to WW. So its not like there is alot of room for an unmarketable, unexciting fighter. Ive got respect for the guy but im just telling it how it is.

Now if Paulo wins they have themselves a new contender. But at the end of the day the UFC is hoping that he gets banged up by the pitbull. So that they will have an excuse to send him packing. If the UFC likes a fighter they will give him a can here and there to try and build him up. Which is the exact opposite of whats happening here, because within one year Paulo will have fought the #2 #3 and arguably the #5/6 WW in the world.

thiago vs. alves…thats funny…say what you want about paulo, but the dude is the real deal, in and out of the cage…he’s like a brazilian John McClane and Jack Bauer love child…the end

  • southcakalak says:

with that being said, i’ll still be picking alves…the end…again

  • Alves has gotten a lot better since he lost to Fitch and has improved his overall stand-up and has developed really good takedown defense. His recent fights were against top competition which IMO has given him more experience and given him a sense of what and where he needs to improve in. He has awesome stand-up with some nasty leg kicks. He just lost to the great GSP and must be hungry for another shot at the title. He showed in that fight that it’s not easy to hold him down, even if your GSP, although GSP took him down at will he still had a difficult time keeping him on the ground and were talking a bout GSP, so if he had trouble holding him down, a lesser skilled fighter will have even more trouble considering the fact that GSP himself had some trouble not only getting the takedown, but keeping Alves on the ground. Alves has already fought the best in GSP so IMO he’s going to come into his nexxt fight on a higher elite level than he was before being that he now knows what it takes to go up against the cream of the crop which is GSP. I think a second fight with Fitch would result in Fitch getting put to sleep for the first time because as good as Fitch is, i don’t think he’ll be able to take Alves down and if he does Alves would get back up anyway and force Fitch to strike with him, and we know that Fitch doesn’t have ko power or maybe even “rocking” power, but Alves does and he’ll take that fight if it ever did happen. Pauolo Thiago is a decent fighter, his only shot IMO to win this fight is to submit Alves, but i honestly doubt that he will even be able to take Alves to the ground so i’m predicting Thiago gets his 2nd loss vis tko or brutal ko by Alves.

I honestly think that Alves is still the 2nd best WW in the UFC being tied with Fitch, besides GSP i don’t think any other guy can beat Alves besides GSP unless it’s a striker who can score a ko punch, Alves’s takedown defense is really good now and the guy is just strong as hell and can ko anyone if he connects. After he destroys Thiago and Fitch beats Almeida, they should fight for the #1 Contender spot like fr702 said.
